News Hart and Godden sacked

Go you one better. In 1934 Glenelg won its first flag and South ended up on the bottom of the table. Then in 1935 Glenelg came bottom and South won the flag.
Back when I started following footy it was always a toss of the coin between South, Sturt and Glenelg as to who would come bottom but I think my Bays had the worst record.....again until that man Kerley came to the Bays.

Out of interest I went looking at the SANFL spoons and here is the tally for the current 10 SANFL teams

South 27
Sturt 21
Glenelg 20
West 19
North 8
Norwood 6
Port 3
Centrals 2
Crows 1
Eagles 0

I only just realised that Sturt won 8 spoons in a row between 1989 and 1996

That's requires a big trophy cabinet at South. Does the Power acknowledge the 3 spoons like with all their premierships of the Magpies.

No no no, you have it all wrong.

It works like this -

'premierships' = One Club
Wooden Spoons = SANFL - doesn't count.

Painful times as a Sturt supporter, no pick 1 to go with the spoon either. Makes this one easy to live with.
Also pretty sure Woodville had a few spoons and I think West Torrens did too, you know from Woodville/West Torrens "Eagles", You've got to include them.

No you don't. We only revel in the old glories like Port Magpies. We conveniently forget spoons.

Was a bit of a rough patch

Two of those were Trigg's. No wonder he couldn't understand fans getting angry after a few losses

So currently, we have twice as many flags as port and they have 3 times as many spoons. I like it!

Am I playing this right?

A guy I used to be friends with back in the day blamed a lot of Sturt's woes on Mervyn Keane getting sacked at the end of 1988.

He reckons it destroyed the club and caused an internal civil war.

Apparently it was brewing beforehand and most players didn't like Keane. He'd been pretty unsuccessful but then once it looked like he was gone halfway through 1988 everything clicked. Started winning, stormed into finals. Players were relieved he was going, handbrake off, bit like Walls at Brisbane.

Kicked 4.18 in the elimination final and got knocked out. All over.

Then for whatever reason we sacked veteran Darryl Smith. Needless. He was living with two of our best young players Laurence Schache and Rob Popplestone. All three went to West Torrens.

We appointed the Jumbo Prince as coach. Great player, terrific bloke to have a beer with, hopeless coach. Loud and dumb.

Also had a few players drafted over that period 1986-90 (Russell, Viney, Whittlesea, Lennon, Kitschke, Welsby, Dilena, Underwood) so our depth slowly eroded.

Predictably things turned to s**t. Actually prepared me well for the Crows' self inflicted ills from Rendell/Tippett onwards

Confirms my comment about South, Sturt and the Bays.

It's funny, a lot of people around the club, not necessarily past players mind you, speak fondly of him.

He was a bit before my time so I don't really know though.

Yeah I don't think he was universally hated but there were people (some players) who wanted him gone. Surprised me when I heard

Interesting comments from Kelly
1.17 mark looks like they are looking at assistant coaches from teams playing in the finals
So who are the midfield and Forwards assistant coaches still involved in the finals

VB, Bassett, Harvey, Roughead.... To name a few.

I'd take Stone but I think he will finish up at the end of 2020 and move back interstate.

If he was staying I wouldn't take him in a line coaching but a development role. He has done an amazing job at the Bays.

I think he’s been extended to the end of 2022 but we will see how that goes.

My feeling is he doesn’t want to travel interstate every second week (in a normal season) as he has done the past few years at Freo

I think we've established that success as an SANFL coach doesn't automatically translate to success as an AFL coach.

I would agree with you that a successful stint as coach doesn’t automatically translate to success in the AFL, but I would note that Stone has been at AFL clubs in the past that have been successful whilst he was there.

He's a front runner, he didn't say he was going to return.

I don't mind it

2) Maybe, but there are two kinds of "we" in your reply. There's you and I and other BF posters --- we should have been able to tell. I can't prove this, but when Hart (renowned defender) was announced as FORWARD Coach I contacted my sister (who's a rabid Crows supporter, makes me look uninterested! :D :tonguewink:) with a "Wtf?" message. I could not see how a defender could make a specialist Forward Coach. Defence, maybe, but Forwards?? Naaaah, and I stand by that. They require different mentality/movement/set-up/skills etc.
1) This involves the "we" that is the Club, the people who appointed Hart and took him into 2020 (not Nicks). Did they employ due diligence, ask Collingwood why he was "released"? Maybe the Pies knew he was woeful but talked him up knowing he'd sabotage, not improve, the Crows' forward line? Maybe he was a bottom-of-the-barrel choice out of several candidates down there, but they went with the Devil they knew? Maybe it was straight-out nepotism (Roo and Hart were teammates). Maybe he was the only one they could get for the $s, and so on. There's so much we supporters don't know and may never know.

It applies a bit to Burton, as well. Did the Crows contact Brisbane to ask why he was released (was he sacked/did he resign)? Other questions, as above etc.

As a heads-up, it's pretty common for defenders to be forward coaches. Nathan Bassett is one currently for Port Power. The reason is - experienced defenders have seen the techniques of dozens of different forwards, while an experienced forward only really knows their own.

My Gran certainly wasn't Keane on the guy.

(she is known to hold weird grudges)

The only thing that makes us Sturt supporters feel better about this is that we are also third on the Premierships list. But yeah that run of spoons was tough, thanks god for fabulous Phil.
