Just a few questions for everyone.

I do not know much about either of these players. Can someone please fill me in on how they play, how much potential they have etc... and whether or not they will actually make it this year?

Also, could someone please post a recent pic of Hartlett? Is he big enough and goodenough to hold down FB this year? And where does Flint play? Same goes for Raso - what is he like and where does he play?

It seems we have had these guys for a year or two now, but i've not yet seen them in action, and I can't find too much recent info on them.

Are they worth holding on to?

All 3 are worth holding on to.

Hartlett is a big boy. He is about 195cm, and I would say about 90kg. Capable of playing forward and back, although seems more comfortable up forward. I believe we are grooming him as a defender. Has an awesome attitude, but has been very unlucky with injuries over the last 2 seasons. As the other BF Blues supporters will tell you, Harts is one of my favourites at the club, and I hope he makes it. He should debut early next year, injuries permitting of course, and I hope to see him as our FB by the end of the season.

Flint is another defender. Came to the club as a rookie, 188cm tall, but since then he has grown to 192cm. As you are aware, he has been elevated and is now on the senior list. Played as a FB before he came to Carlton, but I think he will play in the pocket more. Will turn out to be a solid 3rd defender IMO. Not spectacular at anything, but his defensive work is very good. Hopefully we see him a few times in the Navy Blue in 2007.

Raso is about 190cm tall, but is still very slight. Has the height to be a KPP, but will not turn out to be one, as he simply does not have the frame. He has great skills, is a good runner, and loves a huge leap. I think he will take over Matty Lappin's position as a flanker who spends time on the wing. We took him with the final selection in the 2004 draft as a project player, and he would have been taken with a much higher pick the year after if we did not select him. Hasn't had a preseason before this one, as he has been injured and also was struck down by a bout of Glandular Fever this time last year, which severely restricted him. By the end of last season he had played a few times in the Bullants seniors, which is where I expect him to play for the majority of 2007. May sneak in a few games for the Blues later in the year.

I hope this helps. Anything else you wanted to know about them?

I don't how much you have seen of Flint Jeremias but this kid for his size is a dead set dasher. Loves to carry the ball from the Half back line and needs to work on the penetration in his kicking. If he he can develop even more a hard defensive side to his game which I believe he is capable of then he could be a real smokey in 2007.

Ok so we have Thornton, O'hAilpin, Bower, as definates next year in the back. We have Hartlett, Flint, Austin, Anderson who could possibly play a few games on the HBF.
For some reason i am a bit unsure about Flint and Hartlett. Flint looks a bit skinny, and Hartlett is often injured - I'm just doubtfull as to whether or not they are good.

Everyone tell me they are please :)

They are good AWG. Both very good talents who will hopefully turn out to be long term players for the club.

The club obviously rates Flint highly, as we elevated him after effectively half a season. Hopefully he plays a few games in 07. I expect him to feature in the NAB Cup.

Hartlett is an excellent prospect, and if he gets over his injuries will be a very good player. I liken him to Daniel Bradshaw as they can both play forward and back to great effect. As I have already said, I expect Harts to stand up and cement his spot at FB by the end of the season.

You will just have to wait and see. You will find that once they get their opportunity at senior level they will become very good players for us. It is sometimes hard to judge a player on how they perform at the bullants or how they look on the track, it's when they are thrust into the thick of the action that will tell us more about their capabilities and potential. They key to Hartlett and Flint's fortunes in 2007 will be OPPORTUNITIES.

Hartlett also needs a little luck. He is quite injury prone, and needs to stay away from them if he intends to be a long-term player for the Blues.

One needs to just look at the enthusiasm he has shown in the last few preseasons to see that he has a great attitude and desire and enthusiasm to succeed at the club.

The despair he openly displayed when continually injuring himself over the last few pre-seasons is testament to this.

I saw Hartlett at a club function a few weeks ago and can confirm that he is a big boy, as Jeremias has said, however, it appears that he was limping a tad.

Perhaps this is why there are no pictures of him training because he may not have resumed full training yet?

Both Hartlett and Flint did well for the Bullants this year but due to both of them getting injured, the year was finished on the sidelines.

From what I have seen of them, they are both very good prospects.

Did you watch the NAB Cup AWG this year against Geelong? Hartlett played that night.

That is correct. He is currently nursing an injured calf IIRC.

Hartlett is also a beautiful kick of the ball, before he got drafted he played in the West Adelaide finals series and kicked something like 17 out of 19 shots. Can easily kick the ball 50+, has a very penetrating left foot kick and I can't wait to see him line up next year. Exciting prospect, whether forward or back. :)

Correct-his kicking is immaculate. Not only is is unbelievably accurate, but incredibly penetrating as well.

There is some concern, however, that he has lost some of the power in his legs as a result of his hamstring and knee injuries. Only time will tell whether or not he manages to successfully recover the power. Hopefully he does.

Off the top of my head-
Lappin
Scotland
Austin
Flint
Raso
Walker (hopefully with play on the ball though)
Russell
Bower (may become key postion)
Benjamin
Gibbs (and onball)
Houlihan
Bannister
Lappin, Houlihan can play elsewhere.

Bower and Austin will be KPP.

Walker a midfielder. Scotland can play midfield, as can Russell.

Gibbs a midfielder/half forward.

Benjamin too early to tell, but I don't think he will play down back.

Bannister is a non-factor, shouldn't feature much in 07 or beyond.

We are fine.

Biggest worry on Hartlett is the amount of time he has spent injured. Those injuries have come at a crucial time in a player's development - age 18-22 - where players tend to find their coordination, and start to read the pattern of play. Players who don't get a lot of footy during that time tend to fall outside the play, just never really get into it, regardless of their talent. Best example of that is Luke Livingstone. Hopefully Hartlett has been able to get enough playing time over the last couple of years to make it, but you have to wonder.

With regards to the number of 'flankers' - thats the way footy is played nowadays. Teams tend to drop numbers behind the ball and try to run forward - the best way to do that is with tall, quick athletic players (who would have been flankers in a previous era). At any one time, we're likely to have on our backline 3 KP defenders, 2 small 'tagging' defenders, and 3 loose 'flankers' - which means there's probably room for 5 flankers at any one time. When you consider that those 5 will probably all rotate through the midfield at some point, you probably need 8-12 quality defensive small players in a squad of 22 - which means on a playing list of, say, 30 players, you need to have 15-20 quick, athletic players capable of playing in defense. The list below has 12, so we're well on our way in that respect, but as mentioned a few of those are on borrowed time, and others are still too young to really hold down a role. Thats why we don't win many games! But the reality is, we need more flankers; as evidenced by our draft strategy this year...
