The Billy was offered a contract theory is just bigfooty speculation isn't it ?

He was delisted so its most likely we didn't want him and the fact no ones picked him up suggests that is the case.

That's not my understanding.

I heard he was offered a contract but he decided/his manager/dad decided they felt he was under-appreciated and deserved something more lucrative in either years and or salary.

They then tried to shop him around to see what other clubs would offer him and my understanding is that the other clubs felt the proposed deal was too expensive and showed little interest.

He then came back to the club and the club took the offer off the table and decided to delist him.

I get the feeling that the club was not impressed at all with the way things transpired...

Others am sure have more information than this which could support or completely refute this.

Billy staying or leaving not that significant tbh.
We won't replace him like for like, someone new will come in that will offer a different set of tools we can use, with more poise and contributing to better flow footy, and I'm thinking we'll be better off in the short and long term.

Didn’t Richards have a good job (or at least, degree & good opportunity) to go to?

Not sure where else Billy makes $200+k a year for running fast & avoiding contact unless Kiss-Chasey becomes a televised sport.
Xavier has set himself up.

HUN (Jon Ralph) descibed Hartung as having been Clarko's whipping boy; and says several clubs are interested. He nominates St Kilda and Brisbane as the sorts of clubs that Hartung would be looking to.

Delisted Hawthorn midfielder Billy Hartung expected to find new home in national or rookie drafts

But while the hard-running former Hawk has three more chances to find a new home he might have to wait for a rookie-list selection to play on next year.

Hartung was surprisingly delisted by the Hawks despite 63 games in his four seasons there, including 56 in the past three years.

This year he had the second-worst tackle rate and second-worst contested possession rate of all general midfielders.

Yet despite poor decision-making he remains a linebreaking wingman with a solid upside given his knack of finding the ball.

Hartung has interest from several clubs which could consider him as a late pick in the November 24 national draft, guaranteeing him a two-year deal.

If the 22-year-old misses out that night, there is a delisted free agency period over that weekend where he could also be selected.

Then finally several clubs are considering him in the following Monday’s rookie draft, on November 27, where he could be signed on a one-year deal but be eligible to play seniors from Round 1.

Hartung averaged 22 possessions a game this year but a player considered an elite kick at junior level has not hurt teams by foot.

He became something of a whipping boy for coach Alastair Clarkson but has enough strengths to find a new home.

Hartung will hope a club like St Kilda or Brisbane looking for outside speed and two-way run might throw him a lifeline.

In what way was he Clarko's whipping boy?

So, despite 56 games in the past 3 years, he was Clarko's whipping boy? Jeez, that whip must be pretty much torn to shreds if that was the case.

Clarko has always had hard running outside players in the team.

Young, Bateman, Crawford, Timmy Clarke, Savage, Hill, Hartung and Smith. They're clearly important player types - but he moves them on if they can't hit the next level (young, savage and hartung). He embraces them and makes them a key part of the gameplay when they can make the next level (Bateman, Smith and Hill).

A relation of mine playing at Box Hill has no time for Hartung whatsoever, reckons he's a very ordinary bloke. Better for us he's
somewhere else.

In what way? He seems to have allienated himself from all of his team mates, coach, supporters, BigFooty experts....

That little part says everything. No pressure and poor penetration.

Billy will get picked up again no doubt, theres plenty of clubs who will be interested in taking him, he does offer a substantial amount of X-factor in terms of breaking the lines and link up as well as finding the footy. He probably stuffed it up by expecting more out of us, now will likely end up on less cash and less security elsewhere. FWIW I'm not the biggest fan but he is well and truly levels above a large chunk of our list, that's the part that frustrates me about this whole ordeal.

Maybe at the start of 2017 this was true - but Hardwick has come from nowhere to now have a lock on a best 22 position. Morrison will likely play more games than he'll miss next year. Cousins is showing great potential. Ollie will get senior games from all reports next year. Howe is rapidly showing he belongs at senior level. Glass looked like a leader at senior level in his first game. When you add the players we have coming back from injury into this mix plus the younger players we are going to have to get exposed to senior footy this year (hopefully including O'Rourke and Lovell) then I no longer think that Hartung is ahead of a 'fair chunk' of our list and is a victim of our successful forced rebuild year. You can throw names like Miles and Willsmore around, sure, but they have contracts remaining and Billy didn't. He was expendable and that's what happened.

There's no doubt he can run fast - but his lack of decision making almost nullifies this. He may be able to work on this and develop into a better player - but obviously our list management folk didn't think so.
