I'd like to have Cousins for another few seasons but if he retired, I wouldn't be devastated, just as long as it doesn't drag the club into some media bullshit (which it probably will...no matter how it plays out in reality, they'll find a way to make it something we've done wrong)
Agree 100%. Someone here the other day was slagging us off about our aboriginal recruiting and how we handled them. Troy Taylor, Andy Krakouer (the club didn't ask them to belt the living suitcases out of a member of the public) and Carl Pieterson (even admitted he didn't have the discipline when he was a teenager) all got mentioned but it wasn't Richmond Footy Clubs fault.
You're 100% right Ranger, because we've been shit on and off the field for so long, the club gets slagged off for anything remotely to do with them

I love reading this line all the time " he teaches our younger players how to gut run" when was the last time anyone saw one of our players gut run? The 1980 grand final.

As for the rumour " It is not a rumour! Hardwick hasn't got Ben in his plans. Ben knows this and has been disalluisioned the hole pre season . Expect an announcement before round 5.
Yeah, that is why after only one full pre season match and a restricted pre season program he took his place in the Round 1 squad. Spare us the BS buddy and unless you have some real info please refrain from talking shit!!

Ben has had a limited pre season, played 1 match and just recovered from a couple of nights stay in hospital, yet everyone wants him to be flying like his brownlow days in Round 1. Ben makes headlines, so Ben gets mentioned whenever they can.

On one of the footy panels a panel member said the media actually know more info on Cousins (not sure what they are going on about) but can't print it? He did look pretty flat against Carlton?

There is absolutely nothing to suggest he will be any good as a coach. In fact I think the opposite, he is an introvert and a poor communicator.
Why? Because he doesn't talk to the precious media every five minutes? Not counting his weekly appearance on the radio...or the documentary team that he allowed to follow him around for an entire year.
And of course his muted celebrations after the 2006 Grand Final bore all the hallmarks of a shy retiring type...not too mention his rev ups in our quarter time huddles...or pushing Lids up the race at Subiaco in Round 22.

Never renown for being a particularly smart footballer.
.
Yeah righteo champ...

If even half our list had even half his football nous ..we'd be favourites for the flag...

Campbell may have been annoying on the field but everyone (bar Shane Tuck) seems to dig him as a coach.
So coaching appointments are popularity contests dictated by the players?

Some would suggest that's been a large part of our problem for too long already.

Collins should be playing over Cousins, that should be clear to everyone.
Let's see if he can at least crack it back into the Coburg seniors first shall we?

It's got nothing to do with the media, or how much shit he does on the radio, or his celebrations and "rev ups." Cousins has been, and continues to be, a solitary figure at Richmond, separate from our list of young players, aloof and very much his own man. He's not a leader of men. He's a model no doubt, but not a coach.

Yeah righteo champ...

Didn't say he was dumb, but he's not an outstandingly smart footballer. Players that go on to become coaches are. Cousins is equisitely skilled and a tremendous athlete.

I never said anything about Campbell being popular only amongst players, Wallace and Rawlings rated him very highly and if I remember correctly Eade was a huge fan of him at the Dogs and was sad to see him go. That's what I was basing the comment on Campbell on, not whether the players do/don't like him. I mentioned Tuck as being the only example, player or otherwise, who apparently doesn't like him as a coach.

Collins was one of our better players against Hawthorn in the NAB. He clearly just belongs, most supporters should recognise this. The only reason he's not in the 22 is because he's nursing something.

Ize, stay off the drugs.

Mate, you're not going well. Cousins knows where to run, knows what to do when he gets there etc etc etc. Very smart footballer. And his skills aren't exquisite, they're just very good.

I never said anything about Campbell being popular only amongst players, Wallace and Rawlings rated him very highly and if I remember correctly Eade was a huge fan of him at the Dogs and was sad to see him go.
Meaning: zero.

Collins was one of our better players against Hawthorn in the NAB. He clearly just belongs, most supporters should recognise this. The only reason he's not in the 22 is because he's nursing something.
Actually, he was crap against the Hawks. But you got one thing right, he does belong and should be back soon.

He doesn't engage. He doesn't "coach." Cousins has no interest in coaching and there's no reason to suggest he'd be good at it, except that he plays well. All I'm saying re Campbell is that 99% of people seem to say great things about him, yet we on the board don't like him at all so we're constantly writing him off based on how he played.

I think your comments regarding Campbell are spot on ize.
Leaving cuz aside, Campbell IMO was unfairly maligned and it carries over.
Let's be honest Wayne was better than 98% of the rubbish he played with, and I don't care what anyone says it's much easier to be a gun when surrounded by good players. He was never afforded that luxury. People say he didn't lead us out of the mire, but what could he do really? Unless you are the target man and your initials are Wayne carey you can't drag a team with you, and even then north had some pretty good players.
So you are right, he is still paying for the past, and let's not be wankers, you,I, Mario or whoever on here have no idea how he coaches.
As you say,can only go on what we hear which is all positive.

"He'll play. As long as his form permits he'll play," Hardwick said of his plans for Cousins for the rest of the 2010 season on Thursday.

hardwick seems to rate him and thinks he'll play out the season. (or so he's letting on).
cuz needs to play, of course its hard to be part of a sh!t team, but once the season progresses, he'll feature more.

Going mid-season would be challenging for the club, if only for the media frenzy it would cause.

The more I think about it I'm not sure I want him playing on after this season.
I agree, I hope he doesnt retire mid season. It will be crazy, and the club doesn't need that distraction especially the young players.

If Cousins wants to retire I hope he waits until the end of the season.

Ize, Campbell is on record last year saying that Cousins had been invaluable adding things to their midfield coaching tactics and explaining finer points of being an elite midfielder, and that when he spoke everyone listened 100%, which was something he himself (Campbell) never managed because Cousins was respected on a different level by the players.

Have a think about the systems, work ethic, discipline and execution of the midfields Cousins played in compared to that of Campbell...Cousins knows a lot of things Campbell doesn't. Campbell admitted it himself publicly, which is a first for any coach or assistant AFAIK...so imagine how massive the difference in knowledge and ability to communicate through respect between the two of them really is for him to actually admit it.
