No, is what i would say, but every year the number of things that need to go right, or even against the odds, increases.

E.g.
Hawkins maintaining 2018 form
Selwood winds the clock back 2 years+
Injuries...
Ablett at least as good again
Stanley comes good again and stays fit
Young forwards (Sav, Sparkle) fit and in form
...
It’s a pretty long list

Maybe I am optimistic but I personally don’t think we are that far off. Majority of the games we lost was because of a poor quarter. And unfortunately in this day and age if you have a poor quarter it is hard to catch up.

West Coast, both hawthorn, Adelaide, Sydney, bulldogs, second Richmond game, all winnable. Unfortunately the main issue is our byes.

Ultimately it will come down to improvement from players such as Jones, Cunico, etc.

But as I said, maybe I am just stupidly optimistic.

I tend to agree when it comes to H&A games, and I don’t think top 4 is too much of a stretch - based on the last few years.

The difference is in finals, where you get more thoroughly tested. That is where the gap between us and the true contenders opens up.

What would it take to fix?
Hard to say. Changes in the coaching setup, some changes to the playing list all probably required.

The trick is to figure out (aka guess) which levers to pull. We have seen massive changes at other clubs based on a relatively minor changes; e.g. Collingwood and Richmond coaching shake-up and some important player additions...

There is no simple formula - except perhaps as suggested by the “2 guys,1 cup” podcast... I.e. employ Mark Neald and then sack him in order to get the “Mark Neald bounce” ;-)

Unfortunately yes I think it is. 2016 and 2017 were our best chances at a flag and we blew it. We have not improved at all in the past 3 years. Actually I’d say the last 5 years. Same issues. I can’t believe we have the same problems after years and years. Can’t win after a bye, rely to heavily on too few, can’t perform in finals. Nothing has changed. All we do is bring in players to top up when what we need is a team that plays together for a long enough time to gel. The team is way too unsettled. And guess what. We are topping up again this year with Dahlhouse, Rohan and god knows who else.
We’ve blown it.

P.s if we sign Goddard the club is seriously taking the piss.

maybe! but I like that we're still trying, I think it would be a disservice to the senior group we have not to. also since the worst that can happen is we fall off a cliff and have to rebuild I don't really understand the angst people have about it.

was shut at the end of 2013

end of 2016 it was welded shut

end of 2018 nothing is getting in, need to get the bulldozer
are you always this gloomy or does the GFC just bring out the specialness in you?

Exactly. We are still in contention while the Trinity is relatively potent and we have Hawkins. Surely mustering some real assistants for them is a must.

Not really being gloomy when it's the truth.

Most just dont want to accept it, they would rather live in a Chris Scott fantasy land where we can rebuild and contend at the same time.

No such thing. Just ask Footscray, Richmond...
Play win, then win some more get into the 8 and have a great September and WALAH!!
Simple as that.

It's your belief, not the truth.

My belief is those with strong, negative views, tend to think they know the truth and need to tell everyone about all the friggin' time.

2012-2014: Failed under finals pressure.
2016-2018: Failed under finals pressure.

What part of the above are beliefs?

Otherwise, I agree. For example you say we shouldn’t recruit or retain players x, y, z for clear and obvious concerns with injury or ability (or lack of it). You then get howled down for it, so when those players get horrifically (and predictably) exposed you’re entitled to remind people of it every chance you get.
