I think the current list of head coaches are the best and have the most collective job security.

Most bottom of the barrel clubs/battler clubs have a mid table coach and are competitive. The rise of the mid table coaches string their supporters along. Keeping the battler clubs content without actually being able to win a flag.

Most of the clubs AFL wants to win because they are powerhouses and make lots of money when successful have a rusted on coach for life.

Currently both the mid table coaches and power houses are filled with rusted on coaches for life. There is arguments against sacking any of them which is why the AFL must be thrilled

Stand and applause the following mid table coaches that have turned their clubs from being bottom of the barrel to competitive: (Coaches for life job secruity)

  • Brad Scott
  • Ratten
  • Hinkley
  • Fagan
  • Voss
  • Clarko (not that he can't win a flag but he coaches a battler club where success is finish mid table and not last)
  • Justin Long

Stand and applause the power house coaches: (Coaches for life job security)

  • Craig M (Powerhouse club)
  • Simmo (Powerhouse club)
  • Dimma (Powerhouse club)
  • Longmire (Powerhouse club)
  • Scott
  • Beveridge
  • Goodwin (Powerhouse club)

What a stable coaching collective. None of these coaches deserved to be sacked from AFL POV. Arguments can be made that if any one of those coaches are sacked they will be picked up straight away.

At the same time if you offer any of those above coaches a 5 year extension NOBODY would bat an eyelid. The media and AFL would be thrilled. Reasonable fans would be understanding.

It never takes long for the knives to come out though.
Chris Scott had half the cats supporter base wanting him sacked before this season and it was only a grand final appearance two years prior that kept the noise below a roar (not sure the club ever gave two shits but a lot of fans did).
Simpson has credits in the bank but he would want 10+ wins this season I would think to be totally safe. Ratten needs a lift this year.

That's what you think and fans think. But from AFL perspective and clubs perspective it's was never going to happen. It would be throwing money down the drain. Mediocrity still makes money

Is this just a troll thread to say Sydney and Melbourne are powerhouse clubs and Geelong isn't?
17 appearances in the past 19 finals series, 12 prelims in last 16 years, haven’t been bottom four since OP’s club even joined the league and we are the least recent team to have won a wooden spoon out of all teams to have ever won one. Can’t argue with facts.

Rather have a magnificent run than 100,000 delusional nuffy bandwagon fans. If on field results are it, we are the powerhouse club.

I mean aside from Fagan and Clarkson being chances to be deregistered as coaches before the start of Season 2023 and never coach again, and then the handful of coaches that will be gone if their teams are s**t (Simpson, Beveridge, Hinkley) then sure.

90% of Port supporters want Hinkley sacked

Ratten will be under similar heat if the Saints miss finals again

Brad Scott hasn't coached a game at the Bombers yet

Voss needs to actually validate the hype and deliver finals to Carlton as opposed to an almost there season

Fagan still has some question marks in finals, and the blowtorch will be straight back on if the Lions have a poor September in 2023

Clarkson may not ever coach again pending this investigation

The rest of the coaches are pretty rock solid, but for example Chris Scott was only a GF loss away from having the same old Cats fans calling for his head after another seasons of also rans

Dimma risks a lot on going all in to get the Tigers back in contention in the next 2-3 years

Beveridge will face heat if the Dogs miss finals, and they only just made it by 0.6%

Goodwin will be under pressure to prove 2021 wasn't a one hit wonder season like the Dogs in 2016 and with that list will be expected to go far

Simpson needs to get the Eagles out of the bottom 4

Point is it's very fickle and I don't think there's stability at all. One bad season could see the end of a few coaches in 2023.

I thought it was a troll thread to say Hawthorn don’t exist.

Plenty of variables contribute to a season, not just the coach.

Fans and media beat the drums when they're nowhere near the inner sanctum of the club.
