The Dockers I think did their due diligence on Bennell before pushing forward with giving up valuable draft picks to secure him in relation to his off field indiscretions. But did they put in the same due diligence into his calf issues while he was a Gold Coast? He last two/three seasons at GC have been marred by calf issues.

This isn't bad luck. He's young enough to hopefully make an impact down the track but this isn't bad luck. When you have known issues and those issues present... it isn't bad luck.

I believe it's a comprehensive questionnaire sent to prospective recruits. I happen to have an electronic copy which was sent to me earlier in the year. It reads:

Name: Harley Bennell

1) Do you have any ongoing physical issues which might impede your football? I've got like this tight calf. Hurts like hell, but she'll be right. I'll just do some extra weights on it.

2) Do you have any drug or drug related problems? Ohhh tricky one. Not really... I don't see it as a problem. I mean if you asked do I take drugs, then that's a simple answer, but you didn't. So, ahhh the answer is no.

3) Why do you want to play for the Fremantle Football Club? Suns got rid of me. Gotta get paid and Ross gave me a buzz. Didn't really understand what he was on about with his jargon but I understand dollars. Had a look into Tigers, but that Dusty bloke has cleaned up a fair bit, so thought I'd come back to WA and hang with my peeps.

Anything else we should know? Not really. I mean this calf of mine is a real stress. Sometimes I can't even get up in the mornings, but I just pop some painkillers that my uncle Reg gets for me from a bloke he knows. They're legit!

Can't really compare to Gumby, he could literally never get on the park. Played 30-40 games (from memory)
Bennell is close to 100 and has had a few injury issues. Nowhere near the same degree as Gumby
