Have we lost having a rival??

Despite some scoffing following the OP it's an interesting topic for a thread. Essendon's biggest rival is Carlton but Carlton's is Collingwood. Both of those teams would say each other. Really it should be North but their lack of fan base is preventing that from happening, very similar to Lakers vs Clippers rather than Liverpool vs Everton. Having said that, if the AFL implemented a "rivalry round" you'd find a Essendon vs North on the fixture.

Collingwood, Carlton, Hawthorn and Richmond. Yeah, we have no rivals.

I don't think OP is suggesting that EFC have no rivals, he's suggesting they don't have a main rival that is mutual. Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond and Hawthorn all have a main rival that isn't Essendon.

Difference is Carlton would put Essendon a close second to Collingwood in their perceived rivalry. Norf fans are obsessed with Essendon as a rival but it only goes one way. Their pissant club is way too beneath us to be considered a rival. Whether the AFL admin put us on a fixture to play in a rivalry round is neither here nor there.

I wasn't suggesting the AFL possibly scheduling a rivalry round matchup means there's anything there. Because there certainly isn't.

lol wut?

Collingwood aren't bitter rivals, and definitely aren't above the likes of Hawthorn.

Carlton hate us more than Collingwood no doubt and we hate them more than Collingwood.

Hawks haven't lost flags to Geelong they have to us and it kills them.
They have- 1963 happened as much as Hawthorn like to pretend it didn't.

Who is Richmond's main rival?
Traditionally, it was Carlton or Collingwood in similar measure. In the Jack Dyer days, Collingwood by the length of the straight.

Nah, Carlton's is Essendon.
The younger generation of Carlton fans generally hate Essendon more. Older, that's more mixed.

Concur
The 84 & 85 GF losses cut very very deep and still do, despite all their success since then
Similarly with Carlton, 93 cut very deeply, hence the OTT antics of tim lane in the commentary box immediately after the 99 prelim final - it was almost like losing the GF the next week or the prelim in 2000 and EFC winning the GF in 2000 didn't matter anywhere near as much

Nah, nothings been lost, just put on hold a bit in some cases.

Also enjoy the West Coast rivalry, their crowds can be campaigners but also respectful at times eg the Sheeds/Hird sendoff.

So, Colligwood V Carlton is one. ..

But Essendon Hawthorn was another... but that may have gone to Geelong now... well it probaly went years ago.. .

So who is Essendon nemesis now? (all of them, i know) but exclusively... Richmond is the only one that springs to mind, because it is usually us and them at 9 and 10 early in the season for the last 10+ seasons...

Traditionally i always had ESS V HAW COLL V CARL GEE V MELB (because of location more than anyting)

Maybe now it is ESS V NTH and RICH V MELB ?? and what about stkilda? Dogs?

Who is out new rival now that ours has gone?

Let's just see what happens when Essendon and Hawthorn are somewhat competitive.

Then tell me that rivalry is gone.

As a child of the eighties, I 'd have to say Hawthorn but agree with the OP in that some of the rivalries are not as intense currently as we have been a mediocre side for the last 15 years. As Jade said, that will change when we are more competitive.
