Gloves on for the Hawks

Hawthorn players took to training of a different kind on Tuesday morning when they swapped footballs for boxing gloves in the inaugural Hawthorn FC boxing tournament.

The players’ warm-up room was crowded with coaches, staff and special appearances from most of the Board, including President Jeff Kennett.

Twenty-six listed players were spilt into two teams, brown and gold of course, with respective captains Ben Kane and Peter Everitt. Once paired up the players took to the ring in two, three minute, sparring sessions.

The exercise, aimed at building confidence, was judged by representatives from the Victorian Amateur Boxing Association and followed the guidelines of a normal boxing match.

The session provided for some heated competition between the players, with no love lost during the Main Event between John Barker and Luke Hodge that saw age and experience conquer youth and agility.

Assistant coach Todd Viney said this succesful team building session was a great exercise for confidence building, especially for the Club’s young players.

“It can be intimidating to hop into a boxing ring to fight, prepare yourself to cop a knock and to then be able to keep going,” he said.

“From a coach’s point of view it is also good to see the boys in a competitive environment away from the footy field and to see how they react.”

While lauding the mental aspects of boxing as a form of exercise, Viney also said boxing had physical benefits especially for players returning from injury.

“In our training program, boxing is mainly on an individual needs basis, the players who are limited in their recovery get a good workout through boxing,” he said.

“Some who are coming back from injury, like Robbie Campbell, benefit from this alternative training,” he said.

Benefit Robbie Campbell it certainly did. His extra boxing sessions over the past 12 months earned him bragging rights for Fight of the Day after a solid victory over big man Peter ‘Spida’ Everitt.

“Spida’s got a big mouth so to beat him today was pretty good,” Campbell said after his win.:D

“Boxing has been a big part of my training schedule since my injury last year so I have probably had more practice than some of the other guys.”

For the record the Kane’s Brown team proved overall winners with the official results below.

The Club thanks 2006 boxing gloves and equipment sponsor Fairtex.

My mum could beat up Ries!
Ries is copping a bit these days isn't he!
Maybe he should go to the Micky Conlan school of weighlifting and bulk up a bit. Not as if he has any pace to lose!:D
