From a friend who thrives on this stuff, the right hand Legend represents number flags, scroll to the bottom for summary.

Another way of looking at these numbers is to compare premiership experience at the time the teams won flags (i.e. in terms of premiership experience)

For example when we've won each of our 12 flags, the sides have consisted of:

1961 - 20 players without premiership experience
1971 - 20 players without premiership experience
1976 - 13 players without premiership experience, 7 players with one flag under their belts

1978 - 9 players without premiership experience, 8 players with one flag (mostly '76), 3 players with two flags ('71 and '76)
1983 - 11 players without premiership experience, 6 with one flag, 2 with two flags and 1 with three flags (Leigh Matthews)
1986 - 6 players without premiership experience, 7 players with one flag, 5 players with two flags and 2 with three flags
1988 - 6 players without premiership experience, 6 with one flag, 4 with two flags, 5 with three flags and 1 with four flags
1989 - 3 without premiership experience, 6 with one flag, 6 with two flags, 4 with three flags and 1 with five flags
1991 - 7 without premiership experience, 3 with one flag, 4 with two flags, 2 with three flags, 3 with four flags and 1 with six flags
2008 - 23 without premiership experience, 1 with one flag
2013 - 12 without premiership experience, 12 with one flag

2014 - 5 without premiership experience, 12 with one flag, 7 with two flags

Looking at these numbers, I would suggest that the bolded years reflect complete list rebuilds / separate eras (i.e. where 10 or more players were playing off in their first premiership)...

For all our success (12 flags in 54 years) its pretty amazing to think that we've built six completely different premiership models in no time at all.

The 1976, 1983 and 2013 rebuilds in particular were in genius (as we maintained a reasonable level of performance around these flags)

...what's more they were rebuilds masterminded by our three greatest coaches, Kennedy (1976), Jeans (1983) and Clarkson (2013) with premiership success that followed in 1978 (under Parkin but based on Kennedy's work), 1986, 1988-89, 1991 (under Jeans / Joyce on the back of 1983) and 2014 (under Clarkson/Bolton on the back of 2013)

Interestingly Ted Pool is only one of a handful players in the leagues history that's played 200+ games without experiencing a final...! At Least Graham, Dixon, Lekkas etc. got to play a few finals matches.

Sheesh didn't realise Mark Graham got over 200. Great effort.
He was such a scrubber, couldn't stand him when he played for the Hawks and his attitude when he got dropped and Richmond drafted him was pretty piss-poor.
Must have had some good mates at high positions at the club.
Heebee was a great club man. He was a limited player, played out of position for many years who gave his all for the Hawks. He was aware of his limitations too and was always thankful just to be playing footy. In fact, I was at his 200th and remember his banner simply said "SOMEHOW" - Hebee 200 games. I remember reading later that it was at his request because he couldn't beleive a 'scrubber' like him made it. Also, he was getting delisted when he went to Richmond and was offered another opportunity to do more of what he loved. No Hawthorn supporter should be getting stuck into Graham - he gave a lot to the Hawks, worked hard on his deficiencies, performed admirably on much bigger opponents (was FB when he should have been 3rd tall), played 200 games and even finished 2nd in the B&F of a Prelim side! It's not his fault Hawthron was thin for key defensive talent and a player with his limitations was relied upon time and time again.

Edit: I found a good article talking about his 200th and the "Somehow" banner http://www.hawkheadquarters.com/article.aspx?articleid=780

1991 is often called the too old too slow team but contrast the ages with the last two premiership teams - or even the swans 2012 !

Key. Number name age
Hawthorn
B: 35 James Morrissey 25 24 Chris Langford 26 7 Gary Ayres 31
HB: 17 Michael Tuck 38 (c) 2 Chris Mew 30 1 Ray Jencke 25
C: 18 Darrin Pritchard 25 15 Ben Allan 23 16 Andrew Gowers 22
HF: 33 Paul Hudson 21 23 Dermott Brereton 27 6 Tony Hall. 27
F: 11 Darren Jarman 24 19 Jason Dunstall. 27 13 Paul Dear. 25
Foll: 12 Stephen Lawrence 22 3 Anthony Condon 24. 44 John Platten 28
Int: 8 Dean Anderson 24 4 Andrew Collins. 2642
Coach: Alan Joyce

I suppose superior surgery techniques have influence here. But several of the 91 team played a few more years
Crawf was drafted in 91

That team had significant retirements, but had the basis for a good core going forward. Had the admin maintained financial strength we might have gone quite well.

As it was we qualified for finals 92 93 94 96 and werent disgraced, though won no finals
