personally, i don't think they can keep up the great football all year.

I don't think they wil slip like the pies did last year, but i think they will end up somewhere between 3 and 6.

i agree. I can't see them finishing undefeted but i can't see them slipping down towards the bad end of the ladder!
In any case i would like to wish the Hawks best of luck for 2001 and may you be succsesful in knocking the Dons of the top everyweek!

Footy. It was just a sport.
But now it's also a business.
However, according to the fans it's a religion, where the people rule!

I can't see them slipping out of the top four to tell you the truth.
They look VERY good at the moment.

I can't wait to play them in Round 9 when the Bombers go up against them - should be an awesome match, and interesting to note how both teams will use the match as a gauge for their progress.

Mind you, I'd be more than happy to lose that match if it meant we could beat them in the GF! LOL!

An Essendon V Hawks GF - wouldn't that bring back some memories...! (Good and bad for both teams!)

good ole collingwood for ever,we know how to play the game, side by side we stick together to uphold the REAL magpies name, see the barrackers are shouting,as all barrackers should,YES the premiership's a cakewalk for the good ole collingwood.

they'll finish at least in the top 4 and should provide essendon with a serious contender for the flag

Quite likly they will fall from grace as the year progresses :
- as last years finalists improve towards the business end of the year
- other emerging teams challenge their 'emergence'
- if they suffer a lull, a lapse or 'burn out' (most teams do)
- when (or if) they receive unsettling or key injuries
- if all the bullcrap been written about them goes to their pretty little heads

I think you may find that the Hawks are in fact the real thing this season - and my prediction, pre-season was a top 4 finish. After what I have seen from the side in the first 5 games I honestly believe they have the ability to make it to the GF.

Raoulski - I think you may find that we have already had injuries to key players (Holland, Woods etc etc) and have been able to cover the gap. The side has a number of versatile players who can play in both key forward AND back positions equally well. This was proven on the weekend with Rawlings (a defender) going up forward for a qtr and kicking 3 goals, Croad, McPharlin and the like can also play equally well at either end.

As for your predictions of a lapse or burnout, I think you'll find that young players tend not to burn out - and the majority of our side are under 25. These guys are trained as athletes and there is some exceptional fitness amongst the side.

Thirdly the media has given the boys a lot of negative attention over the last season or two, with the pretty boy tag and doubting the substance of our side.

Most importantly if you have been watching any of our matches, you would have noticed the continual improvement of the side each week. We are not merely fluking our wins, we've played quality opposition who have each placed a lot of pressure on our side. Each week the players are learning and developing.

Who knows if they can win the flag, but I can guarantee they will be a major contender by the end of the season

GO HAWKS

At the start of the year I thought it would be an Essendon v Hawthorn grand final, and I'm sticking by that...

By the end of the home and away season, I believe they will be AT LEAST top 3.

If hawks are 8-0 when they play essendon, they only need to repeat last season's results (win half the remaining games) and they will have 15 wins - that would probably be a top 2-3 finish.

But have a took at the ladder. Thre's already evidence of Hawthorn, Essendon, Richmond, port and perhaps one or two others forming a breakaway and leaving the mediocre teams behind

Anyone can make it to a Grand Final. Carlton made it in 1999, despite being an also-ran. Melbourne made it last year in 2000, despite being a clearly inferior dside to Carlton (who improved dramatically on 1999)

Finals are Russian Roulette football. Upsets happen, and often the best team, doesn't win, and are eliminated. I'd pay more attention to the Hawks home and away win-loss ratio, than how they do in the finals (which, lets face it, are jsut one-off games), when dtermining how good a team they are. If you finish with 15 H&A wins, you have arrived as a force.

I was referring to the Hawks H&A season Dan25????????

After having followed the Hawks for the last 24 years one thing I have learnt is that when it comes to that club getting to the GF is a little bit more than just a fluke....

From what you had to say I guess we shall see you in September then.

Before the start of the season I predicyed a Hawthorn - Essendon GF, so far so good on that one.

I'd really like to have a good look at that Round 9 v Essendon game before saying whether the Hawks are the real deal or not.

Picture should become a little clearer after this game.

Can't wait though - should be a real ding-dong slog, just like the olden days.

cheers

Being a Lions fan I predicted a Lions/Bombers GF. After round 5 I'm not that confident & on current form I think that there are 6 sides that are capable of playing the GF. Obviously Essendon, & one of the following, Hawks, Port, Tigers, Magpies & Bulldogs. At this stage & unless some dramatic turn around in form & consistency I cannnot see the Lions playing in the GF. Apart from 15 mins in the 3rd quarter Hawthorn was awesome on Saturday. Talk about a versatile side, The switch between Trent Croad & Jade Rawlings worked well, but the playmaker for mine was Lance Piccione (sorry about the spelling), but the bloke was bloody everywhere, I thought there was 2 of him on the ground at one point.

I'm not a Pies supporter but you'd be pretty happy to finish the season the way they finished 2000, wouldn't you? Took care of North and stopped them finishing third(ouch), then ran all day with the almost invincible 2000 Essendon to finish only 3 or 4 goals down from memory. Just need more consistency between the start and finish. I think the Hawks should have the talent and experience to do that - and the Pies mightn't be too far behind them either this year.
