List Mgmt. Hawk's List Management for 2025

Usually do one of these before the trade period but was caught-up with other stuff this year so here is my post-trade period update! This is what I have at the moment. As you can see, firstly the list is STACKED in terms of talent (which we already knew) but is also pretty close to being completely full as it is. If what I have is correct, then we have 36 primary list, 4 Cat A and 1 Cat B locked in for next year which leaves us with limited options in terms of drafting next month and SSP/MSD in 2025.

If I had to guess, I'd say we are likely to delist-then-rookie one or both of Gunston and/or Breust for flexibility. Regardless, we can only intake a max of 2 players to primary/Cat A list at the moment plus the option of another Cat B player if we want (which I suspect we will re-sign Bennetts with).

As usual, if you spot any mistakes then please let me know :)

Here is an out of the box question. Which line in the Hawks best team is under the most pressure to perform?

To answer this I asked myself, "Where on the playing field are the Hawks spending their money?"

Here is a Best 22 (don't hold me to it, this is just a concept). And yes I am fully guessing the salaries.

FB: Hardwick (700k), Barrass (850k), Frost (450K)
HB: Amon (600k), Battle (850k), Sic (900k)
C: D'Ambrosio (250k), Newcomb (700k), Weddle (500k)
HF: C McDonald (450k), Lewis (600k), Moore (700k)
FF: Ginnivan (400k), Chol (500k), Watson (150k)
Fol: Meek (400k), Day (800k), Worpel (550k)

Int: Dear (150k), Nash (500k), Scrimshaw (500k), McKenzie (350k)

Sub: Breust (400k)

In the mix: most other players on our list.

Be clear, I fully guessed the salaries and I know they will be wrong. I was just going for ballpark numbers. The point is to see, in general, into which line the Hawks have put their money.

Backline = 4.35mill
Centre and Followers = 3.2mill
Forwards = 2.8mill
Interchange and Sub = 1.9mill
Total = 11.25mill

Salary Cap = 15.8mill

This 11.25 mill goes to 25 of 38 players. The 13 other players receive up to 4.55mill which averages out at 350k each. That includes Ward, Gunston, Reeves, Serong, Butler, Mitchell, Maginness, Blank, Ramsden, HH, BMac, Scaife, McCabe, Ryan, Harry, and the 2 new Cat B + 3 ND guys.

350k is maybe a bit high for the average and so I likely under-shot the salaries of the players in the best 22. But that does not matter for the purpose of this exercise.

The point is, the Hawk's backline is now by far the highest paid part of our best team.

And I am EXPECTING them in 2025 to be a near impenetrable wall.
Elite post Alite. Love this kind of post, leads to a question IMHO, is our focus now on the Forward line in the draft and trading in forwards into our line up next year? Feel like we are one KPF short at the moment.

We currently have 3 genuine KPFs (Lewis, Chol and Dear) and two speccies (Ramsden and Scaife). That looks a bit thin, except that we have a surplus of KPDs of whom one or two may be able to successfully transition. Whether we prioritise someone like Sims will depend on how we rate the prospects of Ramsden and Scaife and how we rate the feasibility of repurposing one or two KPDs.

Good point. Which brings us back to the draft and I can’t wait to see what MM and co have in store for us. I do love a mystery.

I’m hoping for a gun midfielder
I think Cody will fit that bill and even if that doesn't fructify, Rowell is OOC next yr, surely we should try to land him instead of the Harley Reid chase.

1st rounder and chips should do the job. In our system he would truly bloom.

Isn't KPF the more dire need.

Interesting post, thanks for the work.
You have raised my expectations. I'm not expecting a goal to be kicked against us till after the bye!

OK quick question. The latest article has Cody going around the high 40's.
Say we don't manage to do a deal with pick swaps and we have picks 33 and those two in the 70's.
Do we take Cody at 33 or do we spend that on a KPF? (there are bound to be some pretty good gets around that number).

Spend it on a 'slider' (someone we rate, who hasn't been picked up yet) or select best player available that isn't Cody.

If there's nobody we want then trade the Pick into 2025 & select Cody with whatever junk we have left over (70's picks will come into 50's).

Watching the year back I’m a massive Chol fan. He’s frustrating for sure but also moves for anyone of my age who liked tennis like Miloslav Mecic. Love anyone who has that much ability to do it so easily. I hope we draft a potential replacement so it ensures he is laser focused on getting the most from himself. With Lewis back he and dear as 2/3 kicking 30 each would be amazing.

Getting ahead of themselves?

Maybe when we thought we could four pete?

Sam Mitchell has never got ahead of himself, ever
Nothing in that article suggests we're getting ahead of ourselves. It's almost all entirely positive.

Chol ‘second year blues’ checks wiki starting his 10th AFL season. Is Ralph using crapGPT?

Might take a game or two for defence to gel like fwd line in 2024. Teams are so even right now
Without trying to defend Ralph, I imagine he meant more like Chol repeating his second year stutters at Gold Coast.

Chol's 2023 paled in comparison to his first at the Suns (22 games vs 8, 44 goals vs 10) which ultimately meant he ended up being expendable and got traded to us.

Not sure people actually read the article. Looks like they read only half of the by-line......

Football is littered with stories of clubs getting ahead of themselves after a single-season spike. JON RALPH writes, don’t count on that being the Hawks even if they’re now the hunted.

Yep, in fact, it's so positive I don't really believe that Ralph wrote it!

Going to be interesting over the next week in all the phantom drafts.......

HAWTHORN

Jack Ough

Midfielder/Defender, 194cm, GWV Rebels/East Point

Drafted: HAWTHORN

We say: The Hawks have expressed a desire to climb the draft order a little, with this currently being their first pick. However, that looks like being easier said than done. If they remain here, Ough is a player who would suit and the Hawks have done some work on him. A draft riser this year, the Ballarat boy spent time in defence and on a wing before primarily playing as a big-bodied onballer in the second half of the season and catching the eye. With a December birthday, he’s one of the youngest players in this year’s draft pool but already has a mature body and brings clean hands and good decision making to the table.
The numbers say: Rated above average in the Coates Talent League this season for disposals (22.5 per game), contested possessions (9.9 per game), score involvements (4.8 per game) and tackles (3.8 per game).

34. Hawthorn – Hamish Davis (Claremont/Western Australia)

Club Claremont/Subiaco

State WA

Height 190cm

DOB 02/05/2006

CHRIS CAVANAGH SAYS:
Like the look of this 190cm forward, who experienced a spike in interest on the back of his performances playing senior WAFL games in the second half of the year. He could add another element to an already exciting young Hawks forward line.

One thing in particular in Ralph's article:
"The Hawks will take two picks in the national draft and while they are open to moving up in the order with 33, they want to keep their first and second-rounders next year (linked to Carlton) so won’t give up either to move up."
Which is dead wrong because in an earlier article MM stated that we were very keen to retain our F1 (not give in to WC) so we can attempt to move up the draft.
