In case your interested

A late deal involving Port's Toby Thurstans and a move to Hawthorn failed to get over the line as the 2pm deadline passed.

Thats from AFL.com

I think the deal involved pick 40 odd...

Is he any good? How old is he?
Ummmm......Toby Thurstans has an AFL premiership medal to his name (which beats the hell out of every single other player on our list).

Frankly he's 24 years old and he's good, well far better than 5 of our front 6, and we failed to get him, in exchange for a 3rd round pick, due to 'paperwork'. If it'd been completed, I reckon it would've rivalled Saddington to Carlton as the best trade of the week.

Thurstans is handy at best. He would have been okay but no problems missing out on him. He plays his best footy at CHB which is probably why the Hawks were interested, but for some reason he played mainly up forward for the Power.

He's big and quick (like... um... maybe... Jon Hay if anyone remembers him?). And we would have got him essentially for free.

After using Picks 3, 6, 14, 18, 22 and 38 are we going to use 54 on anything we really need? (Not to disparage whoever we might pick up with 54.)

Sorry, but Hawthorn have the AA CHB. And is there only one position in the Port defence?
True, but for the season of 2005, The reignin AA CHB was Chad Cornes, and that's what i meant.

If we'd (haven't seen cofirmation that was the case) of given up a third round pick for him I could have dealt with it okay, probably about his worth.

Question though, would it of been the pick earmarked for T.Tuck? If so, does that throw into doubt him coming to us via the F/S rule as it's got to be that 3rd rounder (unless we use our 2nd rounder I suppose). Though the thought of doing that seems.. kind of strange.

We traded pick 54 with Lonie.

After being ecstatic about our results for Hay, I was a little disappointed to hear this today. Huddo said at about 2.05pm that a deal involving Hawthorn and Thurstans and/or Damon White had just missed the deadline. Not sure if White was involved in that, perhaps he got that wrong, but I would have been happy with either, at the right price.

Nothing will take the grin off my face today though re. the Hay trade. I would have been happy for him to stay, but 2x 1st Rounders is an exceptional deal. :)

I totally agree...Hay's best is well behind him. He was a good player for our club but I think we made the right decision. In regards to Thurstans - would've been a handy pick up but it's not the end of the world.

The original deal was Thurston and White for pick 22 and player ?. But really didn't get to any line because Thurston could't sign a stat dec in time and they could't contact White.

Thurston and White both had poor years neither were in ports top 25. Explains Williams wanting to offload them.

You would have to say both clubs left their run too late and their attention to detail was non existant.

Port were dealing with the crows for White and then Hawthorn came in late with an offer for Thurstans. So Port ditched the crows and went for the Toby deal, but it couldn't get done in time.

Clarkson would have worked closely with Toby during his time as forward line coach at Port so must have a bit of time for him.

It's silly that these 'big deals' drag on so long and players/clubs miss out at the end. The Hay/Motlop/Pickett deal could have been settled by Wednesday - it was very close to what The Age reported that morning minus a bit of draft pick argy bargy.
