Okay, I'm crazy, I know, but I'm biting at the bit for season 2006 to get going.

My Hawks Team: Round 1 2006

B: Osborne Dawson Jacobs
HB: Smith Roughead Hodge (c)
C: Clarke Mitchell (vc) Young
HF: Bateman Croad Franklin
F: Taylor Williams Boyle
Foll: Everitt Lewis Crawford
Int: Murphy Brennan Miller Dixon

Emerg: from Guerra Barker Campbell Ries

Considered: Vandenburg Ladson (maybe not over last year’s injury)

Suspended: Brown

Note: Sorry Vanders fans but I rate those named before him just that. Sure he hasn’t lost the captaincy but remember this is my first round team not necessarily the selectors. I’ve always been of the opinion that captains can be left out if there are better players available. Strange aren’t I.

Go for it now gals and guys shoot me down in flames.

Dawson at full back is a disaster right now...He would be murdered...

Hodge captain or vice captain is rubbish too...Wont happen this year..

Vandenberg and Sewell > Brennan and Murphy..

These hypothetical teams are good, but be realistic. Vanders will be playing, we wont throw a 3 game player at full back etc...

My Team List for round 1 2006

B: Osborne Smith* Jacobs
HB: Boyle Roughead Hodge
C: Bateman Mitchell Young
HF: Vanderberg Croad Franklin
F: Miller Williams Dixon
Foll: Everitt Lewis Crawford
Int: Taylor Barker Sewell Clarke

* For Joel Smith at FB, it will be depending who the FF is, I think if its a bigger body who likes to push his opponents around i.e Richo I think Roughead will be thrown back there.

Maybe Nightwolf, maybe.

Dont forget Dawson will have spent his third preseason with us. He will know he has to put on weight and muscle from his 3 games last year. He's been groomed for the position.

However, the more likely position IMHO is Roughie FB, Croad CHB and Barker CHF with Dawson likely to come in half way through the season.

You are probably right Nightwolf, but remember Clarko and Co are not shy from throwing youngsters in at the deep-end.

Right again ... he said in an interview post season he wasn't ready for it.

If all fit and available the names of Hodge, Crawford, Everitt, Mitchell, Croad, Bateman, Smith, Jacobs, Vandenberg, Franklin, Roughead, Lewis, Clarke, Williams and Barker will be part of the starting line-up.

Then you will have the rest fighting out for the remaining spots depending on form and how the opposition starting line-up shapes.

Depending on match-ups of course:

But my basic best team on paper as of Round 1 would be:

B: Brown Boyle Sewell
HB: J.Smith Roughead Jacobs
C: Vandenberg Mitchell Bateman
HF: Franklin Barker Guerra
F: Williams Croad Dixon

R: Everitt Hodge Crawford
I/C From: Taylor Ellis Clarke Thurgood
Dowler Lewis Osborne

Here is what i Reckon just for round 1 and a few match ups in the back half and middle which will determine who plays and where

Vs Freo in Launceston

B Smith (Medhurst), Roughead, (McPharlin) Osbourne (Farmer),
HB Sewell (Headland, Schammer) Croad (Pavlich), Jacobs, (Loose)
C Bateman, (Black) Mitchell, Clarke (J.Carr)
HF Franklin, Barker, Ladson
FF Dixon, Williams (Parker), Boyle
Fol Hodge (Haselby), Everitt (Longmuir), Crawford (Bell)

Inter Guerra, Lewis, Taylor (Sandilands), Vandenberg

Emergencies: Young, Miller, Thurgood

Also in the mix: Ball, Ries, Brennan, Dawson, Murphy and Little

Suspended: Brown (In the best 18 probably at the expense of

Thurgood misses out as not enough smalls to cover freo's. Smith (As in last few rounds of last year), Ladson and Sewell to rotate through the midfield with Lewis, Taylor and Vanders off the bench. Spida pushing forward at times with Boyle relieving JB. Rougie to go with McPharlin who is extremely strong in the air and quick. I remember watching him kick half a dozen or in a practice match at York Park against Gaspar when he was All Australian, gave him a bath. Wish he was still in the brown and gold.

Verdict: Hawks win by 5 goals goals in high scoring, high possesion affair.

Scorers: Williams, Dixon, Franklin, Barker, Boyle, Guerra, Hodge, Everitt, Smith
Best: Croad (Pavlich kicks 0), Hodge, Everitt, Barker (Welcome back JB)

Really a great appraisal in forecasting the Freo first upper, FBW.

I think you will find Young will be in the 22. My sources tell me Clarko has big wraps on him and so does the rest of the coaching staff. He is working hard.

There will be fast tracking his progress by giving him lots of game time to develop his snappy silky skills on both sides of the body (mainly on the left but working on the other) and the opportunistic speed in which he can footpass the ball on the run accurately to a forward making a lead. He snapped some great goals himself over the last 7 games of '05. The one at the 'Gabba woke me up, asleep in the hot sun, ... it was a gem.

Ta Garry I was trying to fit in Young and Thurgood in for their pace, my team probably a touch slow. I am not a fan of Guerra but his crumbing skills around goal got him over the line. In your opinion who would Young get in the 22 before? Maybee Guerra, Ladson or Boyle?? For mine Ladson has done enough to hold if he has a good preseason cup. You could probably put young on Timmy's wing, let ladson play a crumbing HFF in rotation. Clarke may play across half forward again in a run off defensive type manner which he did briliantly last year. Before his hammy i thought Boyle was good at half forward and provided a good marking target. Anyways lets hope these are the players we have to pick from found 1 ;)

Some one on HHqter's said Ball looked like he had found a yard of pace could he come good yet?

Yes, FBW, as said in another post I reckon leading up to the start, and hopefully all season if we can get a break from too many injuries, it will be the most competitive for zonks amongst the ranks to retain a place in the team. I feel they are working on Young considering his ability to weight the ball nicely on the foot (either) to find chests out of his bursts of speed in a dash. We need such skills in our team so badly and others will need to go for that aspect of their game if we are going to be successful.

Yes, like Timmy Boyle for CHF. We need someone to settle in there so Croady, IMO, can go back to CHB (AA in that possie and I was so pleased for him) where I reckon he is better value.

I really hope so he had reasonably regular selection in 2004 (B&F BoxHill? Someone please advise) but was completely left out except for the bench round 22 ('05), on for about 15 minutes. If he could get 3/4s near his bro's standard we would have winner with him wouldn't we? It would be great to see him turn his career around.

Yep, HD. There's an old perennial question (problem). How do we answer it? A club goes down the right track, develops a great performing mob of top youngsters, say 30 of them over 4- 5 years and it turns out some, maybe 6 - 7 are not getting regular games as they would like and then look around amongst the dollars elsewhere. How can we retain 30 top players over 10 years of our next great decade? I think Brisbane have been pretty good at it??? Anyone have any thoughts?

Brisbane have a bigger cap to start with, i think St kilda are managing it ok at the moment with their players staying loyal after being offered big bucks at rival clubs. They seem to stay a bit more loyal when the players who are around the same age come through together and the team starts performing. So i guess hopefully in a few years we can start playing finals on a regular basis and the kids stay for a shot at the premiership. I think performing well as a team is the key to retaining the list we have built.

The bulldogs are in more trouble, as they can only afford to pay the bare minimum of the salary cap.
