Well folks it was anything but Artic Park today at noon when the Hawks conducted a 50 minute or so skills session in hot sunny conditions at Waverley.
24 players in the main group
1 player ran the boundary and did not participate at all in any session.
His name: Mr. Shane Crawford. Only had his running shoes on and did laps and stretches and later did some push ups and then a small amount of hand ball work. Didnt walk with any obvious injury though.
Players in attendance: Mitchell, Vandenberg, Dixon, Roughhead, Franklin, Spida, Big Robbie Campbell, Smith, Bateman, Ries, Miller, Clark, & Jacobs.
After the warm up of laps and stretching excercises they did short sharp skills session 2-4 minutes on sessions where they were all close together 5-6 minutes on full or half ground routines.
Started with short sharp handball to handball
Then and for a majority of the time the training session was held on the outer flank while we all sat or stood on the Grandstand side, thank you Coach Clarkson.
Moved to a drill of 3 groups of 6 v 2
1 player at each point of the compass (Nth, Sth, East, West) with a further player above the North and behind the South. This group of 6 had to handball or move the ball past the 2 players trying to block this movement. Players rotate in the block position. Looked good.
Back to a more intense handball drill 2-3 mins
Next throw the ball to the ground, the other player scoops up and handballs excercise repeated 2-3 min
Kick to kick, the 2 groups seperated a bit further, concentrated on run, kick to a player, the other player marks then runs, kicks etc. About 3 groups of 8 side by side. Mitchell was in group closest to Grandstand & I thought wasnt as sharp as the rest.. suprising, but noted 2 out of 3 kicks missed their marks. Rest looked good.
Moved to long distance kick to kick with first side running 3 out handball, handball,(if necessary and player there to receive) & kick to another three who repeated from other direction.
Next manouvre, Kick to Kick going from Back pocket to Forward pocket along one side of the ground. Again 6 on 2. 2 small players forward, 2 KPP in middle and 2 smaller player behind. Ball is kicked to KPP's to mark then hand off to the running players who move the ball up the ground and kick to next group of KPPs and repeat. For instance Roughead was on Campbell.
All players then moved into a huddle and talk.
After the talk full field practice. Ball always started in the Back pocket and had to be moved to the forward line where KPP to mark (uncontested) and kick goal. Only about 4 players used as "defenders" or chase players. This group also rotated. About 5mins or so. Looked good.
Next group moved in tight for a contested handball session 4 vs 3.
A couple of minutes of that and the rest was warm down and then down the players race except for Bateman & Smith who used the tackle bag to get some aggression out.
Coach had a media conference 2 TV and about 4 journos. Didnt see which stations.
All the small crowd out by 1pm
Cheers
