Rocked up just past midday to cool but ok day at Waverley Park.
Great to see at least 70 supporters here including about 10 littlies kicking the ball with their parents.
So the supporters are here and increasing in numbers, the 240 Litre bins are on the ground full of balls waiting for the players. 3AW's Andrew Hewitt is here, Channel 10 and Ch 2's Guy Staner and crew here.
Case of ball boys ready, linesmen ready, play..... play??? No players??
1 hour and rain later the boys come out. Rained the whole session until they broke up and did their individual skill sessions.
As the players filled down the stairs from the rooms led by Major Mitchell a group of groupies (what else do I call them) wished Spida a happy birthday only to have Mr. Smith chime in it was his as well.
Jumpers 23 & 31 trained! Big scoop, who knows???? Apparently Ball was very good last week @ BHH.
All 3 emergencies trained as well.
Usual warm ups.... in the rain, that really driving sort of rain, the stuff the gets down behind and inside your coat, lovely stuff. Ooh well if they had only trained when they said they would.....
Ran some sprints then handball drills, 6 to a group then into 2 groups working the ball from D to F. The end receivers being John Barker, yes he trained and Benny Dixon.
Next was their usual move the ball in a triangle offence (Hey a certain NBA coach won a couple of finals using that system & guess what, we can do that 2..)
Note: Mr. Schwab should not read this part. It relates to Zac D. Watched in particular how ZD moved to position, sprinted to take handball, received ok, kicked, continued running, received handball then layed off a handball, all done perfectly.....
The next is what I call the Swoosh manouvre, think about the Nike swoosh to get an idea of how they get the ball and bring it back for a stirring goal.
Swoosh starts with intercepting the ball between Half back and Full Back and delivering down to our forward line.
Cos of the rain a couple of slip ups. Truly the first time Ive heard the coaches have to blow their whistles to stop plays after someone has spilled a mark (Boyle) & at least one other. Normally runs quite smoothely.
Also saw assistant work closely with Kane short sharp kick to kicks testing reflexes and scooping the ball up and h'ball out, scoop, h'ball drills.
About 40 min later training finishes and small groups start working out.
Again Campbell in ruck with Hodge, Vanders, Lewis & Mitchell work on centre bounces with 1 always working as a spoiler.
Dicko, Bateman played who can kick the ball into the 240 lt bin. Dicko's first kick hits the bin the rest go wide.
Autographs and out of here.
Birchall 1st off.
Spoke to Boyle, he said he is not in the starting 22.
Overheard AC tell someone who ZD was playing on. That player better increase his medication if hes going to play well.
Cheers for a not to soaked just time robbed supporter.
