IN: Shoey

He is the only player that has worked up forward since buddy left. with the exception of Hale, but hale just isn't having the impact he once did.

It might fall though, he might crumble but I'm backing him in give him a go clarko. You cant pick any of Frawley, Lake, Startton, McEvoy, Obrian and even Sicily over Shoey playing that swing man role.

He is the only one who has a dip

Agree. Rough looks dis interested. If he is still worried about his health, then tell the club. Nothing wrong with that. Health before footy. But if not, pull your finger out ffs!!

Yeah and listen that's fine, if the illness is effecting you then absolutely get away from footy.. It would have been a disgracefully hard time for him.. But if he wants to play then friggin lead from the front, it's useless being a 6ft4 ballerina, if we want that we will recruit Liam jones

Small ball has hit football. West Coast looked tiny in the line up yet dominated the Hawks. And did the Hawks look slow

I counted about 8 equal worst on grounds and can someone tell me why Gibbo missed the game. But so did Darling so he gets some reprieve.

Full credit to Simpson. He gave Clarko a bath. All night the West Coast pressure was sublime. And they would have been laughing their arses off watching the Hawks worst ball users launch it forward hopelessly time after time.

To good Eagles, well done
Your backline looked really slow, time to get some speed back down there you recon?

A few observations from the game last night:

- To win finals you need to put intense pressure on your opponents and handle their intense pressure. I thought our pressure was good enough to win the game last night (bears out in tackle count, spoils, smothers etc.). Unfortunately we just crumbled under the Eagles pressure, our skills were sloppy as a consequence costing when we entered our F50 and numerous turnovers which led to Eagles goals. Watching the game you would have thought the Eagles were the defending champs...not us.
- It is always easier in hindsight but Smith's injury was obviously still impacting him. To say we were missing run (and not just his) was an under statement. Run creates space and allows us to play our gamestyle. We were just not at the races in that department.
- Before the game I was thinking we needed Ceglar in to combat NicNat. I must admit I was wrong, Hale and McEvoy in particular broke even in my mind in the ruck. Yes NicNat got a few clearences but think his game might have been over rated a tad. Shuey, Hurn, Kennedy and their smaller forwards (Yeo, Hill, LeCras) just cut us up.
- Our defense looks way out of balance to my eye. I think the way we are setting up at the moment is stifling our run and carry and we are forced to play our main players that create the run and rebound footy on players. I suspect Stratton might be carrying something but surprised he took a tall early when he is more effective on the smalls, and personally I don't like us playing Birchall, Hodge and Burgoyne on small forwards - it just stifles our run and we seriously need to look at it. Similarly Gibson needs to be 3rd man man and creating not playing on the 2nd tall, that is why we got Frawley.
- Subi is a tricky ground to play on and we did not get it right last night...not going to apply alcohol to open wounds, but neither Frawleyor Lake can play forward. If we get through next weekend (which I think we will) we need to find a better way of playing the ground against Freo

In terms of changes for next week, if you use Clarko's presser as a guide he is going to trust this core group so I can't see too many changes:
- Injuries: I suspect Smith and Gunston won't get up
- Form: there are a few guys struggling for form....Frawley, Stratton, Suckling and Breust to name a few. I suspect only Suckling might make way, he is there was his disposal but it is not good enough at the moment
- Tactical: will be interesting to see how we manage the rucks and whether we bring in Cegs. Will trust the club on that, think they have done a good job all year

So for me:

Out: Smith (inj), Gunston (inj) and Suckling (Omit)
In: Shoe for Gunston (pls play him high half forward), Hartung for Smith and Litherland for Suckling. I would start Litherland and give him a job down back with Stratton and Duryea in the pockets and Lake / Frawley on the key talls. Free up Gibbo, Birchall, Burgoyne and Hodge to set us up from the back. Hartung the sub

"Thar she blows".
Season effectively over I'd say. Got shown up for speed by richmond and port. Wce on their patch just played awesome footy , whatever their "web" tactic is , it sure works.
I think Hartung shouldve been in the team , but wouldnt have made the difference. We must have seriously banged up players for them to perform like that. Disappointing , but you gotta take the good with the bad.

I've been scratching my head for weeks at why Frawley has been playing forward. It was never going to work and also he seemed our most obvious match up for Kennedy. I think the coaching group got the match ups all wrong.

I would have played Frawley on Kennedy, Shoe on Darling (he is a good match up for him) and Stratton and LeCras. Kennedy is not a good matchup for Lake and I wouldn't have played him.

Forward line of Rough, Gunston and Bruest forward line was good enough for a premiership last year, why the sudden need to add Frawley?

Don't get the thought process at all.

I'll say it again
Schoenmakers is our most important player

Chb, he has a solid kick which breaks up opposition zones
Chf, he's the only player we have that has a lethal kick which is also accurate

He's our only player that can kick a set shot from beyond 30m
FMD.

The way the team attacked the ball and game was like they were saving themselves for their second final and where not willing to put the body on the line. Reputations of a good few of the boys have been smudged after that effort.

Very disappointing but I will be there next weekend cheering them on :thumbsu: I still think we can do it but our chances are slimmer now for sure.

Never been comfortable with Frawley forward, play him down back or not at all. I would make a few changes. Get a few of the young blokes in like Billy, they deserve a crack. Would love to see Schoey get another go as well, bring him in if Gunston misses (highly likely IMO).

You were way too tall.

Maybe play one ruck and drop Frawley and Suckling. You lacked run.

Hartung should have played last night.

Yeah he is done sadly

That's all well and good but who are we relying on? Chip? Spare me. Spang would be great but we're lucky to get 10 games a season out of him! All of a sudden jake the snake looks inviting.

Well that's the worry isn't it as I'm not sure Lake's got another season in him.

Tbh, I was surprised he got another contract this year, was sure he would hang up the boots after the B2B (or be asked to). No chance of him going on next year I don't think. Same with Hale, thought he would call it quits after last year too.

Great commentary, exactly what Hawthorn will do, all of you on here that have thrown the towel in remember Hawthorn do not do that twice!

And that's exactly right, win three games and your premiers, that is the same equation yesterday morning.

I believe the Brisbane Lions lost their first final 2003.
west coast lost their first final in 06. To sydney. At home.

Not over for you guys

Many believe that we will respond, but that's been the bloody problem all year!! We just respond!! How about selecting a team that is prepared to run hard and get handball receives, ground ball gets and intercept possessions!!! These have been lacking all year.

Next week and the rest of finals line up should be:

Stratton. Lake. Gibson
Birchall. Spangher. Litherland
Hill. Mitchell. Hartung
Rioli. Schoey. Breust
Puopolo. Roughead. Burgoyne
Mcevoy. Hodge. Lewis

Shiels. Langford. Ceglar. Duryea

Gunno and Isaac inj.

Lot more bounce from the back half , still a strong midfield and a good forward line!! Breust, Stratts, Hill, Birch, Shiels and Langford to get going with a bit more intensity and in fact I'm prepared to overlook langers for Howe or Jed.

It's bizarre

People here have short memories. Have you not witnessed what we've achieved in the past 2 years?

We've been written off time and time again yet these boy's have always managed to bounce back.

West Coast were great last night but I'm still backing in this side to go all the way.

Strap in folks long way to go.

Given the year we've had, neither the result OR the way we lost is surprising. Was that game much different to the Richmond/Port(s)/GWS and parts of the Essendon game? In each instance, we were slow, old, disinterested and just pretty well cooked. And I'm OK with that after the last 2 years.

I'm looking forward to the match this week, because it could be the last time we get to see the reigning back-to-back premiers play live this year. (although, i'd love to be proven wrong and see them in October).

Also, I trust Clarko knows what he's doing, but I'd like to see him make some moves in the off season and try and secure our mid-term future by making some tough decisions.

- Ball rarely hit the deck in our fwd 40m. Our small fwds are most dangerous here but had no chances.

- We looked better when we used it by hand but we just weren't clean enough to rely on that.

- Need to look at how Adelaide beat them. Use the ball laterally a lot, helped run the web off their feet switching across the ground.
