I was looking and comparing between our two premiership team, and wondering which one is better in paper and on the field. We have 17 dual premiership players, with the change of 5 players.
In 2013, we had Franklin, Guerra, Simpkin, Sewell & Bailey. In 2014 grand final team, they were all replaced by McEvoy, Duryea, Langford, Suckling & Spangher.
Even though, 2013, seemed a more physical stronger team with Franklin, Guerra & Sewell,
I feel that the 2014 Premiership Team has more upside with younger players and a renewed sense of energy with the younger players pushing us up, etc Langford, Duryea, Suckling, McEvoy. Whereas in 2013, the combatants mentioned above are older match combatants (Sewell, Guerra, Simpkin) with the exception of Franklin. Which team is better, the 2013 grand final team or 2014 grand final team?

On paper 2013. I would question whether there has ever been a better forward line - Franklin (best forward in comp), Roughead (second best forward in comp), Gunston, Breust, Rioli.

But in 2013 we still had some mental hurdles to overcome. In 2014 we knew we could beat any side any time, no matter what. In reality 2014 the better side.

I reckon the 2015 premiership team ;)

GO HAWKS!!!
If we win a premiership in 2015 with our best team in (which would include a menacing backline of Lake, Frawley, Gibson, Stratton) then that would probably be our best premiership team of recent times.

Duryea < Guerra (no disrespect intended to Taylor)
McEvoy ~ Bailey
Langford ~ Sewell
Suckling ~ Simpkin

Jesus > Judas ;)

So not much to choose between them.

Overall, even though we won two fewer games this year, I thought our best footy was far superior to anything we dished up last year, even with all the injuries and suspensions (and Clarko being indisposed for five weeks). :)

I feel like the 2013 team is better on paper. This year though Hawks game plan has evolved and our team is more versatile and unpredictable with everyone understanding and playing their role beautifully.
2012 more so a team of champions
2013 was a team in transition.
2014 is a champion team.

I like the team this year as an overall unit. That said, Guerra leaves a huge hole which we haven't yet been able to cover completely. Guerra vs the Port small forwards this year would have been an intriguing battle.

If you're looking purely at the ins and outs you'd have to say 2013. However, given the improvement in players I think the 2014 team was more complete though.
