Hawthorn fans have been smugly telling everyone else for years how great their club is at everything. You're a destination club, you always get the players you want, your recruiter 'isn't Graham Wrong, is he?'. Three flags in a row buys plenty of 'well they're painful AF but they're also winning so that's annoying' grace, but that period is done and dusted. As fans you can be as wildly optimistic as you like, but you're going to be cut down - that's how being a footy fan works.
2013-2015 was an outlier in the history of the Hawthorn Football Club, not the norm. You aren't the Perth Wildcats, you don't get it right all the time. 1992-2006 happened and could well happen again. You don't have "the" formula, as evidenced by the fact you're currently 17th and adopting a different list strategy to what catapulted you back up the ladder a decade ago. Hawthorn fans are supremely confident about O'Meara because Burgoyne, but what about John Barker and Nick Holland? How much value for money did they give in the 2000s? Even Trent Croad retired at 28 with an injury you couldn't fix. Other guys like Hay, Rawlings and Williams were offloaded. Bad luck happens in footy, we're currently paying $1m+ a year for Naitanui and Mackenzie.
