Why? These guys are kids.

Schoenmakers is a Hawthorn premiership player, so are Langford and Spangher. The idea that every premiership player is a star is silly.
And Matthew Richardson, Nick Riewoldt, Matthew Pavlich, Nathan Buckley, Gary Ablett Sr, Robert Harvey, Tony Lockett are not premiership players.

Thnk you'll find my wink and nudge there was more geared towards pointing out that Hawthorn are a metric shit ton away from challenging for a flag.

It's not two ways that the only way the club is propped up now is because of pokies and temporary success which is now over. As the success disappears along with the fans like last time, it'll just be a footy club in Dingley with some pokie machines in Noble Park North and Caroline Springs. Is that really the basis of a football club?

Temporary success? Id like to see the worser alternative

And take a llok at VFL grand finals in the eghties (tip: pretty much all hawthorn) youll see few hawthorn supporters there was not much fan growth back then. it take a few generations, thats why richmond still have a large following.

Success is such an immoral way to grow your support isnt it?

And I noted that only three clubs got premierships between our last flags. It'll be something similar this time. No matter if we get that bad, the majority of the AFL will be worse

It's this commentary that genuinely amuses me.

The time before that it was nine clubs, or more than half the league.

This belief that 'it'll happen' despite all evidence pointing to a side with some serious, SERIOUS concerns on field.

Hawthorn have historically shown that it's fanbase is relatively flaky when it comes to a team not performing, which obviously leads in to other issues relating to sponsorship et al.

How long until the onfield demise leads to a more concerning off-field calamity?

Hawthorn fans have been smugly telling everyone else for years how great their club is at everything. You're a destination club, you always get the players you want, your recruiter 'isn't Graham Wrong, is he?'. Three flags in a row buys plenty of 'well they're painful AF but they're also winning so that's annoying' grace, but that period is done and dusted. As fans you can be as wildly optimistic as you like, but you're going to be cut down - that's how being a footy fan works.

2013-2015 was an outlier in the history of the Hawthorn Football Club, not the norm. You aren't the Perth Wildcats, you don't get it right all the time. 1992-2006 happened and could well happen again. You don't have "the" formula, as evidenced by the fact you're currently 17th and adopting a different list strategy to what catapulted you back up the ladder a decade ago. Hawthorn fans are supremely confident about O'Meara because Burgoyne, but what about John Barker and Nick Holland? How much value for money did they give in the 2000s? Even Trent Croad retired at 28 with an injury you couldn't fix. Other guys like Hay, Rawlings and Williams were offloaded. Bad luck happens in footy, we're currently paying $1m+ a year for Naitanui and Mackenzie.
This

No one is wishing JOM any ill will, most here (myself included) just find the Hawthorn supporters here funny (not all but there are a fair few) who think their club has some amazing recuperative powers and that success is guaranteed just because the club name is Hawthorn.

The attempts at painting our the JOM trade as smart or 'needing to wait and see' is stretching it.

For what they gave up he would need be danger/dusty quality, I can categorically guarantee he won't get to that level missing 3 years of footy.

At best he becomes a good midfielder, probably not even Tom Mitchell standard though. At worst he never plays again. Ether way it's a diabolical trade.

Our team usually gives a damn and plays to its capacity

Just some years it's skill and maturity challenged

It's basically had box hills back six for a month for example. But giving it a go

If that continues not many fans will drop off

I won't insult your intelligence by saying fans don't drop off

Hawthorn home game attendances down by 20% so far this year, and the lowest they've been since 2006.

Which is freakin staggering when you consider that this figure includes the fact that Hawks fans still though this was a finals capable outfit when buying a membership.

Your fans are categorically, irrefutably abandoning your club in droves. Your 2018 annual report is going to be a freakin hoot to read.

So you are saying no team gets a drop-off? How about your shining beacon club, essendon? say over the last five years

an no doubt an obsessive like you will read the report.
If you wanna keep a close eye on a club, try your own. Utterly disgraceful yet you probably think they are closer to a flag than hawthorn

I the last bit is true, then mate, it doesnt take that long

Hehehe. JOM is a gun. You just wait haters....

I guess what we're trying to say is that even if O'Meara turns out to be a gun, he'll be like Mark Murphy running around with Liam Jones (forward-line Liam Jones).

All of Hawthorn's best players are older players.

Hawthorn's top 5 in last years' Brownlow:

Mitchell - 16
(T Mitchell -12)
Lewis - 11
Gibson - 10
Burgoyne - 10
Rioli - 8

So even if you count the Mitchells as a straight replacement, is O'Meara going to replace Lewis, Gibson and Burgoyne next year?

Hawthorn sure don't have any draft picks to replace them.

Hahahahaha... all clubs experience a decline during lean times - none so bad as yours though cupcake.

Here's one for ya - Essendon's 2016 home attendance was greater than what the Hawks currently is.

Just let that marinate for a second, I'm sure it'll sink in.

I DO keep a close eye on my club.

Clearly Hawthorn fans don't though - they don't SHOW UP so how can they keep an eye on em, amirite?

And of course Essendon are better placed to challenge for a flag than the Hawks are. Not that it's anything to write home about though, there are quite literally 17 clubs currently better placed than the Hawks to build/challenge for a flag.

Some of our fans skipped a year while half our VFL team was playing, probably fair enough, yet we've got higher attendances than a team which finished top 4 last year and has more members?

And we don't have to sell matches interstate to get an extra 10k 3-match members and prop up our numbers and bottom line. I wonder how many of those will keep turning up.

And how are we not closer to a flag? We're in the finals, that's got to be closer to a flag than 17th and looking like getting worse again next year, doesn't it?

I'd rather our club who have overcome some mistakes but stuck together than Hawthorn which use low-socio-economic areas as pokie revenue to prop up the club for when the fans disappear again. Is that not as utterly repugnant?

By 2021 Hawthorn might have more members in Tassie than in Melbourne and just vote to move the club anyway. Probably the easiest way for Tassie to get a team.

It would be a poetic ending to an auspicious era should Hawks give up the #1 draft pick, 16 years after they basically robbed Fremantle of the 2001 #1 pick that drafted Luke Hodge
How did we rob them? We put an offer on the table that they accepted?
Did we get robbed when we lost Buddy?and got pick 22 or similar.

CupCake? five year figures noron. bombers v hawks 2016 to 2017 was 300% improvement. you know that the attendance counts opposition fans as well?

They arent making the utter outlandish claims you are
“I know the footy world out there is saying ‘well, 2016 thank God Hawthorn didn’t win it’ we’re saying ‘get ready we’re coming again in 2017’,”

"We believe we have a group of players that can help us deliver that despite what everyone else thinks about our more senior guys being past their best and all that sort of stuff."
