Season 2008

A big year is upon the Hawks, who made a good impression in 2007 with their strong squad consisting of youth and experience, but bowed out of the finals to the Kangaroos in ordinary style. The start of the year will see Shane Crawford, Jordan Lewis and Luke Hodge along with Campbell Brown to miss the start of the season through suspension, plenty of talent.

The Hawks did find a new breed in 2007, with best and fairest Brad Sewell continue to impress, while Lance Franklin established himself as a premier key forward in the competition with 73 goals, while Jarryd Roughead provided 40 with good support. Sam Mitchell and Brent Guerra also had good 2007 seasons in the midfield.

Farewells to Ben Dixon, Joel Smith, Richard Vandenberg and recently Danny Jacobs will leave a hole of experience, but the addition of Stuart Dew, who has reconsidered retirement has established himself as a leader, while Cyril Rioli will be poised to continue momentum from the NAB Cup as a first year player, whilst elevated rookie Cameron Stokes can do the same.

An interesting 2008 lies ahead for premiership contenders Hawthorn.

Round One: Hawthorn vs Melbourne, MCG

Grant Birchall has been named a hero by coach Alistair Clarkson after the half-back kicked the match winning goal with less than two minutes remaining on the clock. With the Hawks behind by one point, Birchall gathered a loose ball 70 metres out to take a quick bounce then nail the kick from 55 metres out to put the Hawks in front.

Melbourne came out firing, but the Hawks kicked nine goals to four in the second term to take a half-time lead, where the match would become an arm wrestle from then on, with the Hawks prevailing 16.11 (107) to 14.18 (102) infront of 38,000 fans.

However, Hawthorn has lost two of there dashing wingman in Chance Bateman and Ben McGlynn for the 2008 season, both requiring knee reconstructions. Bateman landed awkwardly in a marking contest in the second quarter while Ben McGlynn turned in a tackle to limp off the ground.

Travis Tuck, son of VFL/AFL games record holder and Hawthorn star Michael, along with Sam Mitchell, were the best for the Hawks with 27 and 29 touches respectively. Stuart Dew also played a fantastic first game for the Hawks, having 27 touches himself and 10 marks.

Russell Robertson and Jeff White were the Dees best, with Robertson kicking 4 goals along with 23 disposals, while Jeff White handled Campbell and Taylor with ease in the ruck, having 20 touches, 9 marks and kicking a couple of goals in a close to best on ground display.

Colin Sylvia is expected to miss a month with a foot injury, while Nathan Carroll was reported in the third term for striking Tim Boyle, which may see him miss 2-3 weeks.

There was a share of goalkickers for the Hawks, with Franklin, Ladson and the injured duo of Bateman and McGlynn each chipping in with two goals. David Neitz kicked two for Melbourne.

Debutant Cale Morton struggled, failing to get a touch in 23 minutes of game time, while McNamara contributed with 9 touches and a goal from the back pocket. Hawks Cyril Rioli and Cameron Stokes both played a part in the second half.

Round Two: Fremantle vs Hawthorn, Subiaco

A brilliant first quarter, despite its inaccuracies, has helped Fremantle to it's second win of the season, this time against the Hawks at Subiaco Oval in front of more than 40,000 strong fans. After toppling Collingwood in round one, the Fremantle army came out in force to see a 9 goal to 3 opening term keep the home side in front all day.

The Dockers won convincingly 20.29 (149) to 18.11 (119), where the 30 point margin should've been close to double that. It came as a cost to Fremantle, losing its spearhead skipper Matthew Pavlich in the third term to a hamstring injury. It is feared a tear which could leave the durable forward out for a month.

In the high scoring contest, Fremantle shared its goalkicking, with Marcus Drum, Jeff Farmer and Ryan Murphy each kicking 3 goals, while Pavlich kicked 2.5 and had 18 touches in just over a half of footy, including 12 in the opening term.

Hawthorn, maintained amazingly scoreless in the third quarter had its hero Lance Franklin boot his first bag of the season with five goals, while exciting youngster Cyril Rioli booted three goals in his second game.

The Hawks shared the ball with Sam Mitchell having 23 touches, and defenders Stephen Gilham and Trent Croad getting 22 and 20 disposals respectively, while Travis Tuck continued his good form.

Fremantle's midfield was too good with Peter Bell, Heath Black and Josh Carr having 84 possessions between them, while Byron Schammer was exceptional with 22 touches, and 10 marks.

The Dockers are well prepared for the western derby against West Coast while Hawthorn will face the team that knocked them out of last years finals, the Kangaroos, in rivalry round.

Hmm, not too sure what the problem is, I just checked yours and it is a font difference, and not an image difference (yours in .PNG also, for those who don't know, .PNG is better than JPEG for quality reasons)

I am on MS Vista, and I think it may have a relation in that Times New Roman/Arial is usually a default font for MS XP, while Calibri/Cambria are the MS Vista fonts. I am guessing that may be the reason. Not sure how to change default fonts, maybe through control panel?

Round Three: Kangaroos vs Hawthorn, Telstra Dome

North Melbourne have showed they're still strong and tough, and especially intimidating after a 30 point win in a tough contest between rival Hawthorn, to go to the top of the ladder over night with three wins to start 2008.

North lead all day, breaking away in the final term with six goals to two to be victorious, 14.13 (97) to 9.13 (67) in front of close to 40,000 fans at Telstra Dome.

Shannon Grant and Nathan Thompson lead from the forward line, finding plenty of the ball, kicking 5 goals between them in a low scoring game. Brady Rawlings was also fantastic with 23 touches and 4 assists, whilst holding Jordan Lewis to 12 touches.

Robbie Tarrant provided two valuable goals in the final term in only his second game, while Shannon Watt ventured forward in the first half to kick a handful.

Lance Franklin was the Hawks best up forward with two majors, but missed on six occassions, while Jarryd Roughead played well up the ground, booting two goals also.

Travis Tuck became the leading stat getter on the ground, continuing his dominance off the square, having 25 touches and 8 marks. Luke Hodge found it 22 times and kicked two majors while Grant Birchall and Clinton Young provided good run and carry.

Hawthorn have lost the last two games, needing to win next week to ensure they are still contenders. Shane Crawford will also make his way back into the side.

Round Four: Hawthorn vs Adelaide, Aurora Stadium

Aurora Stadium saw a new look attacking Hawthorn today as they fixed there problem of running out games after half time, booting 9 goals in the final quarter to a 37 point victory against the winless Adelaide Crows.

Hawthorn blew away with the game after each break deficits were within a goal, with the final score sitting at 21.12 (138) to 13.23 (101), in front of close to 15,000 fans in Launceston.

Buddy Franklin kicked his way ahead showing his ability against the Crows with six goals, after seven in the 2007 Qualifying Final against the South Australians. Beau Dowler also chipped in with a cameo performance, kicking 3 goals in the final quarter.

However, it was the other tall forward in Jarryd Roughead who produced an extraordinary game. Roughead pulled in ten marks and a career high 34 disposals as well as 12 inside 50's from centre half-forward, working Scott Stevens overtime.

Stephen Gilham and Brad Sewell played well off half back, having 11 marks each while the midfield took control with Shane Crawford, Jordan Lewis, Travis Tuck and captain Sam Mitchell all playing there part.

Ken McGregor was the victim of poor kicking, producing 2.8 in the inaccurate blitz by the Crows. Chris Knights was the suprise goalkicker with four goals at half-forward, making the most of opportunities. Michael Doughty played a solid game off the wing on Tuck.

Round Five: Brisbane Lions vs Hawthorn, Gabba

Hawthorn has got its season back on track with two consecutive wins coming after an impressive victory against the Lions on their home turf. Hawthorn looked in control all night in their 15.16 (106) to 8.17 (65) win, in front of 25,382 Lions fans.

Sam Mitchell played his finest performance as skipper, inspiring the side to their 3rd win of the year. Mitchell had 21 kicks, 13 handballs, 10 clearances and booted 3 goals in a four quarter performance. Jarryd Roughead, also 3 goals, was the main forward, as Franklin missed opportunities, held goalless by Daniel Merrett before the Lion defender was helped off the ground by trainers with an expected knee reconstruction required.

Former captain Shane Crawford also looked good with 28 disposals while Travis Tuck and Luke Hodge also found the pill, thanks to a solid performance by lone ruckman Robert Campbell where he had 20 hitouts and 17 touches.

Brisbane's Matthew Moody played a solid game while Jared Brennan was the only multiple goalscorer, with Jonathan Brown also held goalless by Stephen Gilham.

Brisbane remain with only one victory in the 2008 season, and will miss their full back for the remainder of the home and away season, whilst Hawthorn have moved into the eight.

Franklin steered the Hawks home in there 15.13 (103) to 11.13 (79) display, kicking 3 majors whilst having 27 touches and taking a career high 18 marks around the ground.

Jarryd Roughead, 21 disposals and 11 marks was also a target, while Robert Campbell continued his solid form with 24 touches, 16 hitouts and 2 goals. Despite Roughead and Franklin controlling the forward zone, Campbell Brown was a key with 18 touches, 2 goals and keeping Nathan Brown quiet.

Sam Mitchell had 27 touches after an impressive display last week, while Shane Crawford and Brad Sewell were terrific in close.

The battle of the Tucks was interesting, with Shane winning out with 24 touches, where Travis managed 18 touches, with both brothers kicking a goal early in the game. Their dual was exciting to watch, but the elder much stronger in close.

The Pies, with the breeze, kicked the opening five goals of the final term to look in perfect position after the Hawks were up by two goals at the last change. Round Eight: Hawthorn vs Port Adelaide, Aurora Stadium

Beau Dowler has stepped up in what Alistair Clarkson described pre-match as a "make or break" type of game for the youngster. Dowler, coming into the game with one goal in his past three games, turned it on for the 12,465 Launceston fans, booting six goals, with five coming after half-time.

Hawthorn booked in its fifth win for the season, and fourth victory in the last five matches, with a 20.15 (135) to 16.18 (114) score line against Grand Finallists Port Adelaide.

After a close opening three quarters, where Port looked on top of the midfield, Brent Renouf's move into the ruck helped the charge forward, with Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge breaking tags to help steer the home side into the clear with five goals to two in the final term.

Dowler impressed, kicking two in the third term and three, including the sealer, in the final quarter. Cyril Rioli also enjoyed a good game, kicking the other two final term goals. Jarryd Roughead and Lance Franklin kicked four between them, to keep the tall timber as potent as it could.

Damon White didn't give up for Port Adelaide, coming home with five goals to his name, with a goal in each quarter, whilst David Rodan booted three off half-forward. Peter Burgoyne was moved into the midfield after half-time after a good start in defence, but he provided run, kicking two goals after the main break, while Wilson and Cornes tagged well.

Port will be missing Matt Thomas for up to two months while Troy Chaplin came off in the opening minutes with a broken finger, also expecting 2-4 weeks out.
