Round Nine: Melbourne vs Hawthorn, M.C.G.

Melbourne have done just what the Hawks did to them in round one in revenge and payback, with a 7-goal to 1 final term to defeat the Hawks, as 34,518 fans watched in amazement. The Punt Road end had a breeze, in which was significant enough to allow the Demons a chance in the final term to win 17.21 (123) to 18.13 (121).

The Demons were going the scoring end, with 26 of the 35 goals in the match kicked to the left side of the screen. Brad Miller turned into the hero, displaying his best with six goals, three of which came late in the game. David Neitz and Brad Green were also good servants in front of the goals, while Russell Robertson was terrific up the ground.

The Demon defence held up in the final quarter also, led by Jarred Rivers and Daniel Bell, combining 33 possessions and 21 marks between them.

Hawthorn were unlucky not to get the victory through a tremendous team effort, with all players finding the ball on ten or more occassions. Sam Mitchell continued his Brownlow form with 32 disposals while Travis Tuck collected the pill 25 times.

Stuart Dew kicked 3 goals in the opening term, having 20 touches in a game where he was needing a form boost. Brent Guerra also did himself confidence with three goals.

Round Ten: Hawthorn vs Western Bulldogs, Aurora Stadium

The Western Bulldogs have claimed back there premiership contender status with an amazing win over the Hawks in Launceston, a 18.14 (122) to 16.11 (107) victory. It was set up for a great final quarter, with both sides locked at 87 each going into the final term, but consistency across the board paid off for the Dogs.

An even performance, Brad Johnson, Robert Murphy and Scott Welsh were all focul points, each kicking three goals, while Mitch Hahn booted two with the entire forward line potent.

Adam Cooney continued good form with a close to best on ground display, winning 25 touches and kicking two goals. Jason Akermanis was also entertaining, while Dale Morris was moved onto Mark Williams, where he held his own and won the contest after quarter time.

Mark Williams booted four goals in the opening term, but Morris held him goalless after the first change. Lance Franklin however was unstoppable, kicking seven goals with his 16 kicks and 11 marks.

The midfield did enough to contribute, with Sam Mitchell another excellent performance, with 33 disposals and supported by Shane Crawford and Travis Tuck, but it was the defence that proved lack of quality, with Stephen Gilham, Trent Croad and Campbell Brown all off there season form, while Brent Guerra had a shocker, having five goals kicked on him by three seperate opponents in short time.

Clinton Young will face the MRP or tribunal after a brain fade, elbowing Nathan Eagleton, who would miss the rest of the game as a precaution, despite unconcussed. Likely to face up to a month in the stands.

Round Eleven: Essendon vs Hawthorn, Telstra Dome

Hawthorn have clawed back into form with a terrific win tonight against Essendon, dominating play since quarter time thanks to a ten goal second term. The Hawks ended up being easy victors, winning 25.14 (164) to 13.19 (97) by 67 points at the MCG in front of just over 54,000 fans.

After a defining game last week, where four changes were made during the week, a team effort was once again at hand, with each player contributing for the winners. Travis Tuck was A-class in the midfield, having a career high 31 disposals, twenty of which at half time, as well as kicking two goals off the wing.

Tuck wasn't the only standout player, with Luke Hodge playing his best game of the season, having 30 touches while Sam Mitchell, Brad Sewell, Shane Crawford and Jordan Lewis all were very good through the midfield.

The defence made a big turnaround, with Stephen Gilham and Trent Croad letting through two goals between them. Campbell Brown and Zac Dawson, in his first game of the season, were also very good.

The goals came out of the midfield with Lewis and Ellis kicking three, but Lance Franklin (4 goals) and Jarryd Roughead both played well.

Essendon started out of the blocks with eight of the first ten goals, but were quickly beaten everywhere. Mark McVeigh's four goals and majority of sixteen disposals were all in the first half.

Angus Monfries was good in the midfield with 28 touches, while Alwyn Davey and Jason Winderlich played well for their spots.

Round Twelve: Adelaide vs Hawthorn, AAMI Stadium

In an amazing game, the Crows have stormed home in there 3rd win infront of over 35,000 fans with a nail-biting five point classic win. The Hawks, who lead by a convincing 25 points at three-quarter time could not hang on to a gutsy Crows outfit, who provided ten goals to five to win 22.14 (146) to 23.3 (141) at AAMI Stadium.

In a shootout, the Hawks were exceptional infront of goal, kicking a remarkable 23 goals out of 26 scoring shots, with Lance Franklin booting eight straight goals, and first-year player Cyril Rioli kicking a career high six goals.

It was all Adelaide in the final term though, using the slight breeze in their favour well, with Ken McGregor, who was well held by Stephen Gilham in the opening three terms, kicking three of the ten last quarter goals. Luke Jericho also excelled in the final quarter, having 8 kicks and 5 handballs as well as booting two goals in a magnificant display.

Adelaide's midfield held up well, with Tyson Edwards and Scott Thompson stars, as Jason Porplyzia and Robert Shirley were also at their prime which has hardly been seen in 2008.

Lance Franklin took 14 marks and had 22 kicks in his eight goal masterpiece, while the midfield was consistent once more, with Luke Hodge continuing his consistent good form.

Round Thirteen: Hawthorn vs North Melbourne, M.C.G.

Hawthorn have climbed back onto the winners list today with a big win over the Kangaroos at the MCG. Hawthorn lead all day after an eight goal first quarter to derail the Roos finals chances with a 50-point victory, 23.15 (153) to 15.13 (103).

Buddy Franklin was once again the star of the show, following his eight goal haul against the Crows last week, with six goals today to take his tally past 50 for the season. Stuart Dew was terrific in the second half kicking a couple early goals in the third term to take the game away from the Roos.

Travis Tuck continued his impressive work in the midfield, where Sam Mitchell, Luke Hodge and Brad Sewell all kept below par. Tuck had 22 touches, 6 marks and booted a best 3 goals in the clubs "best win of the season" according to Alistair Clarkson.

North Melbourne will have some troubles at both ends, with Corey Jones and Matt Riggio both reported during the final quarter, while Leigh Brown didn't appear after quarter time with a calf strain.

Leigh Harding and Drew Petrie provided three goals while the usual suspects of Brent Harvey and Adam Simpson did well, and Brady Rawlings tagged Mitchell out of the game, but Daniel Harris and Ben Davies couldn't perform.

Shane Crawford had a brilliant opening half, having 17 touches till the main break, but a foot injury caused him to miss the rest of the match after spending two minutes on the ground after half time. STK.gif
St Kilda vs Hawthorn
HAW.gif

Hawthorn have taken the points in a fierce match at Telstra Dome tonight in front of over 42,000 fans. St Kilda, on the ropes of trying to break into the eight failed to deliver against Hawthorn, who consider themselves as genuine contenders with the hard fought victory. St Kilda came out strong with a four-goal half-time lead, but the Hawks clawed back in the third term to then go on, winning 17.9 (111) to 14.16 (100) with a 6-goal final term.

Coming off a close loss last week against Sydney, the Hawks continue there push towards the top four. In another typified Hawk team effort, no player had more than 23 disposals, despite the side accumulating 340 disposals. Mark Williams was in terrific touch, but once again failed to do damage on the scoreboard.

Robert Campbell, who has struggled to recapture his early form with a second ruckman in the past two months, had the job to himself tonight and succeeded, playing his best game of the season at the right time of the year. Campbell had 21 disposals, 8 marks and controlled the ruck all night, whilst also chipping in with three goals.

Youngster Mitch Thorp, in only his third career game, and second of the season, was superb, filling the void left by Jarryd Roughead, where Tim Boyle had limited game time. Thorp kicked 3 goals and collected 19 touches and 10 marks. Lance Franklin, also chipped in with 3 goals and 19 disposals.

Nick Riewoldt fired for the Saints, kicking a couple of goals, taking a bakers dozen marks, and finding the ball more than any other Saint. Adam Schneider was also very good, but Stephen Milne and Aaron Fiora failed to fire, and Justin Koschitzke turned up with a migraine and didn't get on the ground.

Fraser Gehrig provided five first-half goals, but the midfield was far from damaging after the main break. Lenny Hayes and Nick Dal Santo having no impact in the final quarter after good games up until then.

James Kelly lead the dominant midfield while Paul Chapman continued to push all night, kicking two and three goals respectively and having 53 touches between them. Gary Ablett and Jimmy Bartel weren't far behind, having 22 touches each.

COL.gif
Collingwood vs Hawthorn
HAW.gif

A competitive Collingwood outfit has consolidated it spot inside the top four tonight in front of a massive home crowd, of 73,891 at the home of football against contenders Hawthorn. After a six-goal to two second term, Collingwood kept it's lead in tact, with only a surge coming just after three-quarter time, in the end a 16.13 (109) to 12.19 (91), 3-goal victory.

There were plenty of contributors for the Pies, with young star Dale Thomas arguably best on ground with 27 skillful disposals and 9 marks at half forward, including one goal, while Travis Cloke (21 disposals, 13 marks, 1 goal) and Chris Egan (26 disposals, 8 marks, 1 goal) also performed.

An injury to Cameron Wood would force Travis Cloke to play in the ruck, in which he contributed 11 hitouts. Heath Shaw strolled off half-back to kick two goals in his 21 touch performance while Alan Didak kicked 3 goals in a commanding performance.

Hawthorn's Lance Franklin was excellent once more, kicking another bag for the season, this time six goals, beating Tyson Goldsack and Shane Wakelin. Robert Campbell and Stephen Gilham (holding Rocca to two goals, whilst having 21 touches and 10 marks) were also solid contributors.

Cameron Wood is likely to miss the rest of the season with a broken ankle, while Hawthorn's Beau Muston had calf tightening but came back on in the final quarter.

Hawthorn vs Brisbane Lions
BRL.gif

Robert Campbell and Lance Franklin have lead the Hawks to an outstanding victory at Aurora Stadium today under the Launceston clouds. In a match that both sides needed to win, the 'Tasmanian' Hawks kicked 15 second half goals to Brisbane's 7 to win easily, 27.16 (178) to 14.13 (97), by a massive 81 points.

It was Robert Campbell's day out, with a career high 29 disposals, along with 11 marks, a massive 33 hitouts and to top it off, two goals to be the star of the thrashing. He comprehensively smashed Jamie Charman. Lance Franklin was also too damn good, kicking seven goals to leave the Lions defence pondering.

Heritage Round couldn't have seen son of VFL/AFL games record holder Michael Tuck, Travis, have a day out as the Rising Star favourite had another 21 touches and 10 marks. Stephen Gilham was also remarkable in a Croad-less backline. Gilham manned Jonathan Brown all day, holding the key to one goal, while Gilham kicked one himself and have 25 touches and 9 marks.

Sam Mitchell, Luke Hodge and Shane Crawford had 84 disposals between them, while Brad Sewell collected 18 himself. Mark Williams also found better form on the scoreboard with a handful of goals.

Simon Black was the Lions best, but not so at the stoppages with only three clearances, but managed 11 marks and 25 disposals including two goals. Travis Johnstone and Nigel Lappin also chipped in with a couple goals and found the ball on numerous occassions.
