Thought I might start a thread on the Hawthorn Reserves and Box Hill seasons from the beginning -1925 onwards.

I'll put up the scores for each season, where we finished, the available goalkickers, and who featured in the best players.

Probably won't be much to discuss until we get to the more recent seasons, but I'll keep plugging them up and people can comment whenever they like.

One win, fifteen losses and a draw saw Hawthorn finish last on the reserves ladder (12 teams). A rather unhappy first season!

Our average score of 51 is still the lowest average we've had in the reserves competition. However our feeble percentage of 57.1 would eventually be worsed.

Goal kickers were provided for only 10 of the 17 games, so 43 goals are unaccounted for. The remaining are:

Best players were also not listed in the papers for 7 rounds, but of the remaining 10 matches that were, Jack Boothman feaured in the best players 8 times, 3 of those as Hawthorn's best player. Boothman would not debut for Hawthorn until 1927, and just played the 2 games.

Others to feature in the best multiple times were Albert Hyde, who debuted for Hawthorn mid season and went on to win the Hawks senior goalkicking the following 5 seasons, and Bob Sellers, who would wn the HFC B&F in 1928.

Gee, the Melbourne reserves would have been furious - or going to the snow, one or the other. ;)

Looking forward to this.

Rover Jack Boothman again featured prominently in the best players, as did defender Pat Murphy. Both these guys would debut the following year for HFC, but have very short senior careers.

Bert Officer played a consistent season up forward in the reserves after playing in HFC's inaugural match the year before.

Fred Finch, the 1925 B&F winner, found himself playing the majority of the 1927 season (his last at Hawthorn) in the reserves where he performed well. Alby Millard also had a strong season for the ressies, but couldn't add to his 1 senior game from 1926.

Dave Withers did enough in front of the sticks to be put on the senior list the following season. He went on the play 11 games and boot 18 goals over the following 3 seasons for the Hawks.

Dave Withers had another good season at full forward, his performance enough to earn him a Hawthorn debut in round 16. He played the last 3 games there, kicking 8 goals.

Rover Allan Quartermain had a good season for the Hawks Reserves. Only 15 years old, he would wait until 1932 to debut for Hawthorn but after such a long wait in the reserves, he only manage the 2 games. Perhaps Steve is a distant relative and has held a grudge as a result.

The interstingly named Vin 'Willie' Woolf, a full back, managed 8 games for the Hawks in 1928, before adding another 2 in 1931.

Don Mills was a half back flanker who was too good for reserves level but failed to set the world alight in senior footy. Syd Hayhow was another backman who had a good year, but would not add to his 6 games for Hawthorn in 1928. Withers had another good season at full forward - given he played 7 games for Hawthorn, his 28+ goals for the reserves was a good return, and included a 7 goal haul in round 3.

Jack Ryan was a tiny forward pocket specialist, just 165cm. As well as booting 32 goals in 7 games for the reserves (including an 8-goal haul against North in round 17), he snagged 16 for the seniors. He finshed up playing 70 senior games for Hawthorn and kickng 142 goals, leading the Hawks goalkicking in 1931 and 1932. Bert Ashby managed 25 goals for the reserves in 1930, including a bag of 7 against Fitzroy in round 9. He was at Hawthorn for 8 seasons, for a total of just 25 senior games. Fred Hansen was a rover who'd come across from the Bulldogs. Despite his good form in the seconds he played just the 1 match for Hawthorn.

One more name of interest is Leo Murphy. Murphy showed enough form in the ressies to earn a debut for Hawthorn in round 13. He never looked back, playing 132 games for the Hawks, taking out the most consistent player award in 1932 and winning the Best & Fairest in 1936 and 1937.

Hi Stemline, where are you getting all the info from. I spoke to Peter Haby awhile ago about reserves data and he said it was very much a future project / work in progress, and was going to involve going through papers etc. I offered to assist, but didnt hear anything else. I'd love to get a list of players that have played at least one reserves game.

Jack Ryan was a tiny forward pocket specialist, just 165cm. As well as booting 32 goals in 7 games for the reserves, he snagged 16 for the seniors. He finshed up playing 70 senior games for Hawthorn and kickng 142 goals, leading the Hawks goalkicking in 1931 and 1932. Bert Ashby managed 25 goals for the reserves in 1930. He was at Hawthorn for 8 season, for a total of just 25 senior games. Fred Hansen was a rover who'd come across from the Bulldogs. Despite his good form in the seconds he played just the 1 match for Hawthorn.

Of more interest is that Leo Murphy is the father of Fitzroy champion John Murphy and grandfather of Carlton midfielder Marc Murphy. The ones that got away.
I don't think he is any relation to Tom.

Pretty much all grabbed from the online newspaper archives, with the gaps filled in with trips to the state library to view the microfilm. Up until the mid-50's it's a bit hit and miss with regards to goalkickers and best players. Through the war years only the scores were reported.

I've sent the complete list of Hawthorn reserves scores to Peter, he was grateful for that.

The Aitchison brothers dominated the best players for the Hawks Reserves. A half back flanker, Ern debuted for the Hawks in round 14, but was dropped again after round 15 and didn't play again, depsite 2 more years of strong performances in the reserves. Jack, a rover, would have to wait until 1935 to make his Hawthorn debut. He played a solitary game.

Alan Story topped the goalkickers. He was a CHF who, in calendar years, must have had one of the longest spanning Hawthorn careers for least return. He debuted for Hawthorn in round 1 1932, and played his last game in 1944, but totalled just 15 games. In truth, he wasn't actually at the club for 7 of those 13 seasons.

Another name of note is Stan Spinks. Primarily a centreman, the 171cm Spinks played well enough in his reserves outings to earn a debut for Hawthorn in round 18, the last round of 1931. He would go on to play 143 games for Hawthorn, winning the Best & Fairest in 1932 and 1938, and compiling 78 Brownlow votes along the way, a total no other Hawk reached until Peter Hudson came along.

Not a happy year in Hawthorn's history. A winless season and a spoon for the reserves to go with the senior team's winless season and spoon. To top it off the Ressies set their new lowest score in round 6.

Some names of interest include Bob Williams, who despite not being named in the best players for the reserves, debuted for Hawthorn in the final round of the season. Oddly, he missed the entire 1933 season before playing the first two rounds of 1934 and the remainder in the reserves. Half way through 1935 he was elevated again and didn't look back, playing a total of 136 games and captaining the Hawks in 1943.

Dick Logan had played his last game for Hawthorn in 1930, but stuck around for a couple of seasons in the reserves, playing some sensational footy on the wing. So good was his form in 1932, he was awarded the Gardiner Medal for the best player in the Reserves Competition.

George Dower's career began inauspiciously in the reserves in 1932, but he went on to become a terrific player for the Hawks, playing 100 games between 1933 and 1940, most of them at CHB where he was regularly named in the Hawks' best. He earned state representation 3 times and won the Hawks most consistent award in 1937.

After the Reserves' worst season in 1932, from nowhere came a 12 win, 6 loss season and a surge up the ladder to 5th in 1933. 4th placed St Kilda had a superior percentage, thus Hawthorn's first ever finals match went begging by a few percent.

The Ressies set a new high score in round 1, and bettered it in round 17. A new Greatest Wining Margin was also set, in round 3. The end percentage of 116.8 would not be bettered for another 23 years.

Ern 'Tich' Utting, now retired from senior footy, captained the Ressies and had an outstanding season leading the side up the ladder and winning the Gardiner Medal for the best and fairest player in the seconds league, making it back to back Gardiner Medalists for the Hawks. Having been a star in defence for Hawthorn, in the seconds he ventured further up the ground and booted 6 goals in the big win in round 17.

Larry Cordner was a stand-out in front of goals, especially early in the season, kicking 16 goals in the first 4 rounds. He was rewarded with a Hawthorn berth in round 10, but it would be his only senior appearance.

Back pocket Ernie Loveless had crossed over to the Hawks from St Kilda at the start of the year. In and out of the senior side, his BOG for the reserves in round 6 launched his Hawthorn career. He was promoted and played the rest of the season in the ones, the next season winning the Hawks Best and Fairest.

Utting was again outstanding, named in the best players 14 times over the 18 games. With the Hawks' form no better than the reserves, it's a wonder they didn't talk him out of retirement.

Dick Abikhair's form was strong enough to earn him a senior debut in round 14. He would go on to play 60 games for the Hawks. Stan Ogden was a ruckman who'd crossed from Richmond - he showed enough to play 5 senior games for Hawthorn in the second half of the season, but left at the end of the year.

Tom Green booted 7 goals in round 1 and was a semi-consistent contributer after that without standing out. Hawthorn gave him the last 3 games of the season in the seniors, but aside from a couple of goals, his 3 game career was rather unremarkable for a forward wearing number 23.

Jack Aitchison's reserves form in 1935 was simply too good to ignore, and after 3 years of solid form he finally made his Hawthorn debut in round 15. He was dropped the next week and didn't play again.

Frank Samblebe had a good first season in the reserves, but he would have to wait until 1937 to debut for the Hawks. A back flanker, he would play 53 games for Hawthorn over 5 seasons.

The diminutive Alf Hurley (161cm) arrived at the club in 1935. He must have made an early impression as he won both the Best Team Player Award and the Best Trainer Award in his first season. He would play 36 games over 4 seasons.

1936 saw the arrival at Hawthorn of the Albiston brothers. Alec Albiston would become a special player in the club's history. A rover who was deadly in front of goals, Albiston's six week stretch in the reserves from rounds 5 to 10 yielded 20-odd goals, and earned him a senior debut in round 11. He was dropped the following week, but responded with another 5-goal game in the twos. It would take him the best part of another season to fully establish himself as a regular senior player (he won the Most Improved award in 1938), but he went on to play 170 games and boot 383 goals for the Hawks, his last 3 seasons as captain-coach. He won the Best and Fairest award in 1941 and 1946, lead the club goalkicking 4 times, and would become the first Hawthorn player to kick 10 goals in a game. A star player, he famously left the club in acrimonious circumstances at the end of 1949 in a dispute over the captaincy.

Harold Albiston was Alec's older brother. He would debut for the Hawks 2 weeks after Alec, and be forever in his shadow. A back pocket, he managed 62 games and won the Most Consistent award in 1937.

Jim Oakes had a strong season in the Hawthorn reserves in 1936 where, at all of 180cm, he was primarily used as a ruckman. He played 4 games from his debut in round 14, but despite staying at the club for the following year, he would not add to that total.

A good start, a new highest score in round six, a best ever average score of 83.3, and two more wins than the year before (for a total of 5) all counted for little, as the Hawks Reserves won only 2 of their last 15 games for another 10th placing.

Russ Elliot was a 185cm forward who enjoyed a prolific season in front of the sticks for the Ressies in 1937. He booted 8 goals in round 11 against Collingwood and repeated the dose in round 13 versus St Kilda. It would take him until the final rounds of 1939 to earn a senior debut however, after which he played just 9 games over 3 seasons.

James and Ellis were not Hawthorn listed players, but along with Ralph Taylor they dominated the best players for the Reserves. Taylor was a small half back flanker who earned promotion for rounds 14 and 15 but that was as far as his Hawthorn career went.

Ken Feltscheer, a wingman, came across from Melbourne late in 1937. Despite not being named in the best players he was promoted to the senior side in round 17 and held his place for the next 3 seasons, playing 42 games until leaving the club for the war-years of 1941-42. He returned to play one more game in 1943.

Stuart Stewart had played the last of his 130 senior games back in 1935, but stuck around the club to play in the reserves. A versatile tall who played ruck as well as CHF/CHB, he earnt state representation 5 times and is a Life Member of the Hawthorn Football Club.

Bill Pavey began his career in 1937, debuting for Hawthorn in round 4. A small back pocket, he would play 100 games over 9 seasons.

Alf Clay was a forward flanker who slotted 21 goals for the ressies in 1937. He was promoted to the Hawks side for rounds 4, 5 and 6. He kicked a couple of goals but couldn’t hold his spot and didn't play for the Hawks again.

The Hawks Reserves leading goalkicker for 1938, Johnny Hall, is something of an odd story. Recruited locally from Auburn, his 39 goals included 4 bags of 4 goals, and 5 bags of 3 goals. He was promoted to the senior side for the last two rounds of the season, where he kicked 2 and 5 goals, being named in the best players both times. He wouldn't play for Hawthorn again, leaving him with one of the better goal averages of 3.5 per game. At the start of 1939, he was back in the Reserves, kicking 3 goals in round 1 and 7 goals in round 2. Oddly, he then completely vanishes from the scene, never to represent Hawthorn or any other VFL side again.

Ted Pool and Alf Hurley both spent large parts of the last year of their distinguished Hawthorn careers in the Reserves, and both had good form in front of goal.

Ivan McAlpine was Hawthorn captain for the three years prior to 1938, and was still the senior coach that year. He found time to fill in for the Reserves in round 16 and snag a couple of sausage rolls.

Mr Lanning, Ern Elder and Will Taylor dominated the best players for 1938. Lanning was not on Hawthorn's list, but Taylor played round 1 for the senior side before spending the rest of the season dominating the reserves. He wouldn't get another crack at senior footy though. Elder would have to wait until 1940 to get his chance at the ones. He was a full back who played 12 games over 1940-41.

Allan Hird was a CHF who began his career at Hawthorn in 1938. He debuted for Hawthorn in round 11, playing 5 games and a further 8 in 1939. He then left the Hawks to play for Essendon up until 1945, and wound up playing for and coaching St Kilda. His grandson, James, would become a legend for Essendon.

2 more very famous Hawthorn names made their start in the Reserves of 1938. Jim Bohan was a gun centreman recruited from Camberwell. He earned a senior debut in round 13, going on to play 131 senior games, booting 145 goals aloing the way. He won the Most Improved Award in 1942, won the Best and Fairest award in 1943 and 1945, captained the club for two seasons, and was named in the centre in the Hawthorn Team of the Century.

Andy Angwin was a slightly built wingman who would become part of the fabric of the Hawthorn Football Club. He was best on ground for the reserves in round 2 and his form was strong enough to earn him a senior debut in round 5. In and out of the side for a season and a half, he consolidated his spot in the side in 1940 in a big way, winning the club Best and Fairest, and coming runner-up the next two seasons. Injury curtailed his career and he retired at the end of 1944, aged 26. However he remained an integral part of the club, becoming a founding member of the social club, being awarded life membership in 1971, and taking on the role of property steward in 1978. He became a constant and much loved presence around the club, and was rewarded in 2000 with the Jack Titus Recognition of Service Award. For a long time Andy was the embodiment of Hawthorn and stayed involved in the club right up until his death in 2002.

Half back Jack Blackman arrived at the club in 1939. After 4 games in the reserves he was promoted to the firsts and didn't look back, playing 87 games over a 2-part career that finished in 1946. He didn't play during the war years of 1941-1943, but returned in 1944 to win the Hawk's Best and Fairest.

Howard Day was a small forward whose form in front of goal earned him senior games in rounds 5, 6 and 10. He kicked 2 goals in each of those games, but for some reason wasn't given further opportunity and left the club at the end of the year.

Jack Burke was another small forward who arrived at the club in 1939. He had greater impact at senior level, playing 7 games (and kicking 9 goals) in his debut year. He went on to play a total of 74 games and kick 83 goals for Hawthorn.

Charlie Vanderbist was the most consistent player among the reserves. A diminutive rover at 166cm, he debuted for Hawthorn in round 7 and played 7 games over two seasons.

Really enjoying this thread stemline. As I had my first membership in 1947, when the reserves played the curtain raiser, I expect to recall a lot of memories, and names from my childhood.

Thanks a million.

Cheers Thaihawk. Must admit I was getting little worried by the silence but I decided I'd keep plugging these up, mainly because I'm enjoying myself (on worktime no less).

There'll be a little bit more to talk about when we get to the late 50's.

Unfortunately though, from 1942-1957 there's virtually no detail available as firstly sport reporting took a back seat to the war and then the reserves simply weren't reported on anywhere, for whatever reason, apart from the scores. The good news is that from 1958 onwards I have all goalkickers and best players from every round.

Albert 'Butch" Prior didn't set the world alight in his first season at Hawthorn. He wouldn't debut in the senior side until the last round of the following season, but went on to play 103 games, booting 258 goals from full forward. Missing the war years of 1942 and 1943, he returned to lead the club goalkicking 4 times, from 1946 to 1949. Oddly enough for a full forward, he won the club's Most Unselfish Player Award in both 1945 and 1946.

Wally Culpitt was quite an amazing player. He arrived at the club as a defender, his size of 178cm not stopping him from becoming the club's best option at full back. Debuting in round 3, he won the Most Improved Award, which was odd given it was his first season. He played his first 3 seasons in the defensive post, before a switch in 1943 to full forward. He was a success there as well, kicking 43 goals in 10 games (including a 9 goal haul) and in 1944 he slotted 57 in 15 games (including a bag of 10). He missed the 1945 season, but returned in 1946 to his spot at full back, and won Hawthorn's Best and Fairest Award there in 1947. He earned state representation 7 times, and won the Most Unselfish Player Award in 1943, and twice lead the club goalkicking.

Kevin Curran's debut in 1940 caused something of a stir at the club. Plucked from Traralgon by then chairman of the match committee, ex-champ Bert Hyde, he was selected for his debut in round 7, replacing a player who happened to be employed by club vice-president Jim McGuire. McGuire took this somewhat badly and proceeded to abuse Curran before the start of the match. Hyde resgined from his post in disgust. Repercussions for McGuire are unfortunately not known. Curran only played that one game in 1940, then went off to the war for 6 years, returning a decorated war hero to play a further 84 games, primarily in the ruck. He won the Most Determined Award in his return season of 1946, won the club Best and Fairest Award in 1948, earned state selection 9 times, and (again in controversy) captained the club in 1950. He is a life member of the Hawthorn Football Club.

Adding to the list of big names to arrive at the club in 1940 was back pocket Col Austen. He too had a career interrupted by the war (DNP 1944-5). Some good form culminating in a BOG for the reserves in round 10 saw him debut for the Hawks the following week. He played 5 senior games in his first season, and won the Most Improved Player Award the following year. In total he played 85 games, winning the club Best and Fairest in 1949. He left the club at the end of that year in support of his good mate Alec Albiston, who felt wronged by the captaincy going to Curran. In 1989, he was retrospectively awarded a Brownlow Medal after losing it in 1949 on a countback. He is a life member of Hawthorn, and was named on the back flank in the Hawthorn Team of the Century.
