Shannon Gibson was a short full-forward. He kicked a couple of goals in one of the famous narrow wins down at Geelong. Gibson managed 25 senior games over 1995-1997, before being traded to Collingwood for Paul Sharkey.

I was there that day. With a couple of Geelong supporter mates - great times.

Other random thoughts/facts about some lesser names mentioned.

From other clubs - but didn't do much with us.
McCrabb (Geelong), Bunn (Fitzroy), Stevenson (Fitzroy) - has something to do with our club still down in Tassie, Allen (St.Kilda) and Baxter (Footscray) - he probably had a good year or two though.

To other clubs after not doing much with us.
Rigoni (Melbourne), Barnard (Essendon) - part of the deal that got us Salmon, Hargreaves (Geelong) - a small forward who I thought was ok, Young (St.Kilda), Crow (Collingwood) and Anthony McDonald (Carlton) - the middle and least of the three McDonalds.

Kieron O'Dwyer should be mentioned as a first round pick that never played senior footy.

And surely Simon Crawshay, a tall ruckman with a mop of blonde hair should be mentioned even though he was largely ineffective when playing seniors. A bit of a cult figure (or maybe it was just me).

Jade Rawlings arrived at Hawthorn in 1995 after being selected with pick 94 in 1994. He played out his first season in the Ressies, a modest total of 20 goals enough to lead the side's goalkicking. Playing as a full-forward early in his career, the very skinny Rawlings was awarded a senior debut in round 6 of 1996 after sneaking into the best players in the Reserves the week before. He only played the two games that season, before a switch to defence in 1997 produced good results in terms of Reserves form. However when Dunstall went down with his knee injury, Rawlings was called upon to fill the key forward post once again. He gave it a shot, kicking 5 goals in a half in one of his 6 seniors games that year. In 1998 he played 14 games in defence, but 1999 was another injury effected season, although he finished strongly in the senior side. In 2000-2001 he came of age, winning the Best Clubman Award in 2000 and the Most Serviceable Player Award in 2001, making his name as a marking third-tall in the backline. Another good season in 2002 was followed by a reasonably succesfull return to the forward line in 2003, where he kicked 34 goals. Rawlings was then part of the infamous Veale Deal, after he put up his hand to leave the Hawks to play in finals, or play with his brother, or for more money, he couldn't decide which. He had played 116 games for the Hawks.

Ben Dixon was another late pick in the 1994 draft taken at selection 77. He was a forward flanker, also capable of playing as a lead-out full forward. He spent his first two seasons in the Reserves, but began getting regular mentions in the Ressies' best players in the second half of 1996. 3 very strong performances in the opening 3 games of the 1997 Reserves season saw him debut for the seniors in round 5. He was dropped straight away, but responded with another near BOG for the Ressies, followed by more strong performances that had him playing 10 of the last 13 senior games. He finished 1997 with 36 goals for the Reserves (club leader) and 8 for the seniors. From 1998 he was a senior player, finishing up in 2007 having played 203 games and booting 282 goals (at the time 10th most ever for Hawthorn). He played in the 1999 Night Premiership and is a Life Member of the Hawthorn Football Club.

Taken at pick 8 in the 1994 draft (exchanged for Andy Gowers), Daniel Harford began in the Reserves in 1995. He made an immediate impact there, being named in the best players in 5 of 6 matches, the last two as the Hawks' best player, on his way to a senior debut in round 10. He settled right into the senior side, winning the Best First Year Player Award, and the Most Courageous Player Award the following season. He didn't play Reserves footy again until the tail-end of his career when injury slowed him right down. Traded to Carlton at the end of 2003, he had played 153 games for the Hawks, earning Life Membership at Hawthorn.

Tony Woods had been a Fitzroy and Collingwood player (with a year off travelling inbetween) before he got to Hawthorn via pick 25 in the 1995 pre-season draft. Woodsy embraced Hawthorn and became one of the heartbeats of the side. He played 142 games, winning the Best Team Player Award in 1995, the Most Consistent Player Award in 1996, the Best Team Player again in 1997, and the Best Clubman Award in 1998. He played in the Night Premiership in 1999, and lifted himself to be a great player in the finals series of 2000 and 2001, averaging 25 possessions across the 5 matches.

Lanky ruckman Simon Crawshay had been at Hawthorn since 1992. He'd played 9 senior games in 1994, and matched that again in 1995, with his Reserves form so good he was named in the best players in nearly every game he played, and ended up winning the Gardiner Medal for the Best and Fairest in the Reserve's League. With the arrival of Paul Salmon he only played 1 senior game in 1996 and left the club at the end of that year.

Taken at pick 60 in the 1994 draft, Brad Scott played out 1995 in the Reserves. An aggressive backman, he was delisted at the end of the year, but stuck around as a supplementary player in 1996, playing well enough to be named 10 times in the best players and get himself drafted again by the Hawks at the end of that year with pick 85. He proceeded to play every senior game in 1997, only to be traded to Brisbane to play with his twin brother in a deal that brought John Barker and Paul Chapman to Hawthorn. He had a reasonable time of it up there with Brissy, and of course he now coaches North.

David McEwan was a schoolboy wonderkind that Hawthorn took in the compensation draft for sides that had lost players to Fremantle. Losing Ben Allan was somehow deemed worthy of a pick after Essendon, who had lost Todd Ridley. Essendon took Matthew Lloyd, who the Hawks had their eye on. Hawthorn then passed up the opportunity to take eventual All Australian ruckman Steven King, opting instead for the midefielder McEwan who in the end failed to play a senior game. C'est la vie.

Simon Minton-Connell won the Hawks Reserves goalkicking, kicking his 60 goals in 15 matches. His total included 4 bags of six goals and 3 bags of five. He averaged well over 4 goals a game in his last 6 Reserves matches, earning a recall to the senior Hawks side for the final in Sydney.

Brendan Krummel had played at both West Coast and Fremantle prior to Hawthorn drafting him at the end of 1995 with an eyebrow-raising pick 5. He struggled for impact in 1996, managing just 11 senior games. In 1997 he earned himself the Most Serviceable Player Award, playing 21 games and missing just one after nearly having his eye gouged out by Sydney's Jason Mooney, who was cleared of that charge but suspended for 4 matches for headbutting Krummel. Krummel made a habit of being a high profile victim, getting himself completely poleaxed by Byron Pickett a year or so later. All up, Krummel played 64 games for the Hawks. Serviceable, but not really justifying his top-5 draft selection.

Scott Grainger was a rangy tall forward, who never amounted to anything much at all at AFL level. He didn't play senior footy and was gone from the scene by the end of 1997. But geez he was a great player when you stuck him at CHF in the AFL 96 Finals Fever PC game.

The 1997 Hawks Reserves achieved possibly the arsiest Grand Final appearance of all time - via a combination of form returning at the right time, blind luck and a totally bizarre finals system. After an early loss, 9 wins on the trot set up the season but the side finished the H/A season 5th (of 11 teams - Sydney having baled) after losing its last 4 games.

In the 1st Elim Final, the 5th placed Hawks played 4th placed St Kilda and knocked them off by 8 points, Jade Rawlings kicking 3 of the Hawks' 7 goals. 6th placed North knocked off 3rd placed Sydney so the Hawks, as the 2nd highest placed winner, found themselves promoted to the 2nd Semi Final to play the top placed Dogs who had beaten 2nd placed Richmond in the Qualifying final. Richmond defeated North in the 1st Semi, and Hawthorn somehow knocked off the Doggies by 4 points in the 2nd Semi (Kane Fraser and John Hay the Hawks' best, Thommo 4 goals and Shayne Stevenson 3) to win a spot in the Grand Final, playing Richmond who won the Prelim against the Dogs the following week.

Some of the better known names to play for Hawthorn in that GF were Darrin Pritchard and Anthony Condon (playing their farewell games), Ben Dixon, Jade Rawlings, Jon Hay and Nathan Thompson. Unfortunately the match was a largely forgettable one from Hawthorn's perspective, the Hawks in the match up to half time with Thompson looking dangerous. But when he went off injured the game blew out and apart from a giant specky from Rawlings, there wasn't much for to cheer for the Hawks. Best players were listed as Condon, Lloyd, Pritchard, Rawlings and Fraser.

Brad Lloyd was a Supplementary List player for the Ressies in 1997. He won the Gardiner Medal for the B&F in the Reserves League - the Hawks' 10th and last Gardiner Medalist. He was a solid midfielder, sort of an early version of Sam Mitchell perhaps, but couldn't really translate his Reserves form to the seniors. He had a brother play for Essendon, and another one, Simon, who was Carlton's U19 captain in 1989, playing one Reserves game for them before going on to become Hawthorn's club phsychologist for a number of years. Their father had played a small number of games for Carlton. Brad was drafted by the Hawks with pick 67 at the end of 1997, and debuted for the seniors in round 2, 1998 after a strong Ressies performance in round 1. He went on to play just 11 games over two seasons, but was a member of the Night Premiership in 1999.

Nathan Thompson was another Supp List player in 1997. He had some injury troubles in the second half of the season, but had shown enough to be drafted at pick 82. He also debuted in the second round of 1998, but just played the 2 senior games that year, leading the Reserves goalkicking with 29. A big pre-season led to a more mobile and athletic Thommo tearing it up in 1999, playing a role in the 1999 Night Premiership and consistently impacting at senior level that year, winning the Most Improved Player Award. Thommo played 119 games and kicked 192 goals for Hawthorn, winning the Best Clubman Award in 2002 and leading the club goalkicking in 2003 and 2004. He was traded to North for picks 10 and 26 at the end of 2004.

Jonathan Hay was selected at pick 36 in the 1996 draft. He was named in the best players for the Reserves in the 3 games leading up to his debut game in round 17, 1997 (at the time, he was the youngest player on Hawthorn's list). He rarely played Reserves again, going on to play 149 games for Hawthorn, mostly at full back. He won the Most Improved Player Award in 1998, the Most Consistent Player Award in 1999, the Most Serviceable Player Award in 2000, and in 2001 he had his best season, winning the Most Consistent Player Award again, and also gaining All-Australian selection at full back. He also was traded to North Melbourne, as part of a deal that landed Hawthorn picks 14 and 18 in 2005 (Birchall and Bailey).

John Platten played what was probably his first and only Reserves game for Hawthorn in his final season, 1997. On his way back from a foot injury, he played for the Reserves in round 8. Platts was a brilliant rover who played 258 games for Hawthorn, and kicked 228 goals. He played in 4 Premierships, and 4 Night Flags. He won the 1987 Brownlow Medal, also winning the Hawthorn B&F that year and again in 1994. He won Interstate Selection (for SA) 15 times, and was selected All-Australian five times. He won Hawthorn's Most Courageous Player Award in 1988 and 1995, the Best Clubman Award in 1990 and 1993 and the Most Consistent Player Award in 1992. He won the AFMA MVP in 1987, is a Member of the AFL's and Hawthorn's Hall of Fame and a Hawthorn Life Member, and was named in the forward pocket of Hawthorn's Team of the Century and Ultimate Premiership Team. An absolute gun, Johnny Platten.

Peter German was the assistant coach to Ken Judge at Hawthorn in 1998 and the Reserves coach as well. He played a number of the matches, snagging 16 goals and getting named in the best players a few times, despite having retired as a player in 1994.

Glen Bowyer was drafted by Hawthorn in the 1997 rookie draft. He was delisted at the end of the season, but re-drafted in the rookie draft at the end of 1998. Named in the Reserves' best players in 12 matches in 1999, he was Hawthorn's first ever rookie elevation, playing in round 22, the last H/A game at Waverley. Bowyer went on to play 34 more games at Hawthorn over 2000 and 2001, before breaking his leg in the R17/SchwabConnolly/Ben Dixon/Glen Bowyer broken leg/Carlton game. Although on Hawthorn's list for 2 more years, he wouldn't play again until a brief resurection of his career at Carlton. He won Hawthorn's Most Courageous Player Award in 2000.

I don't know if the Paul Chapman that played Reserves for Hawthorn in 1998 is the Paul Chapman that now plays for Geelong, but the Geelong version did play top-up footy for Melbourne's Reserves in 1999, so it's not impossible he did the same for Hawthorn in 1998. The Adam Ramanauskas named above is the one that carved out a fair career at Essendon. If the thought of having those two at Hawthorn is not Ricky Nixon enough for you, there was a Ling topping up the Ressies in 1999.

Kris Barlow played some Reserves footy for Hawthorn early in the year, before playing the year out at Vermont. Hawthorn kept a close eye on him there and were obviously impressed, selecting him with pick 86 at the end of the year. Aside from a wrist injury, he played the entire 1999 season in the seniors, winning the Encouragement Award and also playing in the Pre-Season Premiership that year. Barlow played 102 games for Hawthorn, kicking 74 goals.

John Barker was traded to Hawthorn from Brisbane, and became something of a cult figure amongst supporters. A key position player, probably best suited to the forward line, he struggled to settle into the side that had the key positions for the most part already filled, playing 16 games in 1998 and just 6 in 1999. Given an extended chance up forward by new coach Peter Schwab in 2000, Barker seized the day, playing 23 games and kicking 33 goals, 22 of them in an 8-week stretch at the end of the year. He won the Most Improved Player Award that season. He followed it up with his best season in 2001, leading the club goalkicking with 47 goals, including 2 late goals in the Semi Final to win the game for Hawthorn. A victim of osteitis pubis, his career stalled from there, although he never lost the ability to thread goals from tight angles. A much loved figure at the club, he played 113 games for Hawthorn and kicked 114 goals.

Richard Vandenberg was selected from the Ammos at pick 78 in the 1997 draft. He spent the bulk of his first season in the Reserves, playing good enough footy to get into the best players 7 times in the lead-up to his senior debut in round 17. He played just the one game, but returned to the Ressies to be named BOG in their last two games. Although a member of the 1999 Night Premiership, Vanders didn't become a regular senior player until late in 2001. He the won the Most Consistent Player Award in 2002, and the Best Clubman Award in 2003. He was appointed captain in 2005 until his retirement at the end of 2007, winning the Best Clubman Award again in his last season. Vanders is widely acknowledged at Hawthorn as having helped instill the required mindset in the playing group that allowed them to win the 2008 Flag. He is a Life Member of the Hawthorn Football Club.

Trent Croad was the second member of the 2008 Premiership side to debut, a full 5 years after the first, Shane Crawford. Taken at pick 3 in the 1997 draft, Croady played 17 games in his debut year of 1998, being dropped for 5 games mid-season. He was named amongst the Ressies best players in round 14 and returned to the senior side the following week, and would not find himself playing Reserves for Hawthorn again. He won the Best First Year Player Award that year, and played in the 1999 Pre-Season Premiership and won the 1999 Most Courageous Player Award. He was predominantly played up forward until the end of 2001 when he was controversially traded to Fremantle, where he spent two seasons before being traded back to Hawthorn. Upon returning, he took up a spot in defence, where he won All-Australian selection in 2005, also winning the Hawks Most Consistent Player Award. Croady became the mainstay of the Hawk defence, playing his final game in the 2008 Premiership win, during which he injured his foot forcing his premature retirement. Having played 184 games for the Hawks and kicking 129 goals, he is a Life Member of the Hawthorn Football Club.

Craig Treleven was taken by the Hawks in the pre-season draft at the end of 1995. He was already 25 years old when drafted from WA. 'Jock' was a clever ball-magnet midfielder who slotted straight into the Hawthorn side ,winning the Best First Year Player Award. He won the Best Clubman Award in 1997, but by 1999 he was beginning to be more of a fringe player, hence his appearance in the Reserves. He did play in the 1999 Night Premiership, and retired at the end of 2000 having played 78 senior games for the Hawks.

Adrian Cox was taken with pick 77 in 1998, and slotted into the senior side for the 1999 pre-season comp, playing in the victorious Grand Final side. He began the H/A season in the seniors as well, but didn't last, dropped for round 2 and only playing 3 more senior games that year. A talented small forward, he slipped to obscurity in the Reserves, not making the best players once. However he did kick 5 goals in the last two rounds. In 2000 he didn't play a senior game and only made the best players 4 times in the Reserves. Come 2001, a shift to defence paid dividends, as he was named in the best players for 8 consecutive weeks, finally forcing a call-up to the senior side in round 14 and playing the remainder of the year in the seniors, including the finals series, winning the Most Improved Player Award. In 2002 he played almost all the senior games before again falling away to be a part-timer for the following 2 seasons prior to his delisting at the end of 2004. He'd played 54 games for the Hawks.

Joel Smith was taken by Hawthorn at pick 2 in the pre-season draft at the end of 1997. He'd been a promising young player at St Kilda, who had done an ACL late in the Saints' runners-up season and wanted out of the club, unhappy with the contract being offered there. He sat out the 1998 season, but was ready for footy early in 1999, making his Hawthorn debut in round 2. He struggled for impact in his first season back from the knee, but did manage 17 senior games. In 2000 he switched to a rebounding defender role, and although his form wavered at times, he was definitely on the improve. An intensive fitness and strengthening regime in the lead up to 2001 paid huge dividends for the silky-skilled Smith, as he won the Hawthorn Best and Fairest and All-Australian selection, dominating off the half-back line. His 2002 ruined by hamstring injuries, Smith rebounded in 2003, again winning All-Australian selection, and somewhat cheekily winning the Hawks' Most Improved Player Award. Retiring in 2007, he played 163 games for the Hawks, earning Life Membership at Hawthorn.

Son of Hawk legend Michael, Shane Tuck played a top-up game for the Hawthorn Reserves in 1999, prior to being selected in the rookie draft at the end of that year. He had little impact for Box Hill in 2000, struggling with groin issues, but looked good early in 2001, being named in the best players 10 times in the first 13 games, before being diagnosed with a heart condition that put an end to his season. During his rehabilitation, he decided an AFL career was not for him, and opted out of footy for a while, eventually being coaxed to play the 2003 season in the SANFL by Shaun Rehn. His form there was good enough for Richmond to draft him at the end the year.

And that's it for the Hawthorn Reserves, 1925 to 1999 completed. Somewhat tempted to wrap this up here, but I did promise the Box Hill stuff too so on we go. I'll just put up the numbers though, if anyone wants to discuss players please go right ahead.

The Hawthorn Reserves had finished 1999 in 10th place of 11 teams, and Box Hill had finished 8th of 11 teams. So both sets of players must have been thinking 'how good is this' when the newly alligned side won its first 8 games of the 2000 season.

In the end a poor 2nd half of the season saw Box Hill finished the H/A season in 7th place. Luckily there was a top-8 finals system, but a loss in the Elim Final to the 6th placed Williamstown consigned the Hawks to a season finish of 7th of 18 sides.

With 15 wins and 5 losses, the Donald McDonald-coached Box Hill Hawks finished the H/A season (in a 16-team comp) in 2nd place - 3 wins and a stack of percentage behind top-placed Werribee.

2 narrow wins in firstly the Qualifying final and then the Prelim Final sent the Hawks into the Grand Final, playing against the heavily favoured Werribee side. The Hawks side was named thus:

B: M.Osborne, M.Dent, M.Williams
HB: C.Bateman, J.Baird*, C.Obst
C: B.Nicholls, M.Brewer*, N.Ries
HF: B.Johnson, B.O'Farrell, S.Mitchell*
F: M.Passador*, A.Lord, A.Rock
Foll: R.Campbell, M.Ball
Rv: L.Picioane
Int: M.Smith*, T.Hazell, M.Georgiadis*, A.Puglsey*

Despite captain Matty Brewer being injured in the opening minutes, the Hawks powered their way to a Premiership win, with John Baird (drafted by North) and Sam Mitchell (drafted by Hawthorn) dominating the match.

How neat. The 2001 premiership post was my 1000th post. And I joined Big Footy in 2001 as well. Ah, the circle of life.

In 2002 Box Hill finished the H/A season with 12 wins, 7 losses and a draw, in 5th place of 16 teams. Unfortunately the Hawks conspired to lose the Elimination Final to 8th placed Sandy by 2 points, thus being consigned to a season finish of 7th.

Sam Mitchell won the 2002 Liston Trophy as the Best and Fairest in the VFL Competition. He also won the Box Hill Club Champion Award, after winning the Reserve's B&F the year before. As if his sock draw wasn't full enough, he won the AFL Rising Star Award in 2003.

With the competition reduced to 13 teams and the H/A season reduced to 18 games, Box Hill finished the H/A season in 3rd place, on the back of a 13 game winning streak, ending up with 14 wins and 4 losses. Unfortuantely they lost their way late, losing the last two H/A matches and the Qualifying Final to Williamstown. The Hawks then had a memorable 1-point victory in the Semi Final, before powering past Sandringham in the Prelim to power into the Grand Final. However it wasn't to be, the Hawks not really in the hunt, going down by 29 points. Best players were listed as Matthew Ball, Tim Hazell, Steven Greene, Ben Neagle, Tom Bayford and Stevie Kenna.

With 10 wins and 8 losses, the Box Hill Hawks finished the 2004 H/A season in 7th place of 13 teams. They narrowly defeated 6th placed Coburg in the Elimination Final, and then knocked off the fancied Werribee in the Semi Final, again in a hearstopper. Unfortunately the Hawks wouldn't progress much further, losing the Prelim Final to Port Melbourne by 28 points, finishing the season in 4th place.

Cheers for pushing it through, Stemline. Enjoyable reading.

Just on Paul Chapman, I'll ask his missus when I get a chance (I work with her), but I suspect that it's a different Chapman as the Cats' Chapman was drafted by Geelong in 1999 and from your tables, the Paul Chapman playing for Hawthorn's reserves played for Box Hill in 2000.

According to his wikipedia article, the Cats' Paul Chapman played reserves top-up games for Melbourne in 1999.

Good get, I should have noticed that. Probably not worth asking him then.

What about the Ling that played top up for Hawthorn in 1999? Could it be?

Edit - yes it is -

And I reckon I'll get the remainder of these up tomorrow.

7 wins was enough for the Box Hill Hawks to make the finals in 2005, the side finishing 8th of the 13 sides in the comp. They lost the Elimination Final to 5th placed Port Melbourne to remain 8th for the season.

A meagre 6 wins was just one too few for the Box Hill Hawks to make the finals in 2006. The Hawks finished 10th of 13 sides.

On a positive note, the Box Hill Hawks Reserves won the Premiership. Coached by Kevin Tibaldi and captained by Paul Jolley, they defeated Williamstown 10.11 (71) to 8.11 (59).

Losing their first 9 games, and winning just 6 for the season, the Box Hill Hawks finished 2008 11th of 13 sides. One highlight was the round 17 game against the Bendigo, where the Bombers could only muster 2.8 (20), the lowest score ever kicked against the Hawks Reserves.

The Box Hill Hawks Reserves made the Grand Final, going down to Williamstown 11.16 (82) to 16.17 (113).

In 2009 the Box Hill Hawks surged back up the ladder, winning 12 games in the H/A season (including their last 5) to enter the finals in 5th place of the 13 sides, missing the double chance on percentage. The Hawks knocked off 8th placed Geelong in an Elimination Final, but went down to Port Melbourne in a classic Semi Final, losing by just 4 points.

On a brighter note, the Box Hill Reserves won the Premiership, defeating Sandringham 16.18 (114) to 13.8 (86). Coached by Dale Bower and co-captained by Joel Cross and David Marcius, the side contained just the one listed Hawk, Carl Peterson.

With 11 wins and 7 losses, the Box Hill Hawks finished the 2010 H/A season in 5th place, out of what was now 14 teams (Gold Coast's inclusion). They played 8th placed Bendigo and put them away, before gaining revenge on Port Melbourne for the previous year's finals loss, beating them by a goal in another classic final. Unfortunately the Hawks weren't up to the standard of Nth Ballarat who beat them in the Prelim by 10 goals, resulting in a 4th placed finish for the Hawks.

The Box Hill Hawks Reserves side again saluted in the big one, winning back to back flags when they defeated Williamstown 17.20 (122) to 16.9 (105). Coached by Juston Plapp and captained by Andrew McGuinness, the Box Hill Reserves had now won 3 flags in 5 years. Beau Dowler, Jordan Williams, Sam Grimley, Will Sierakowski and Michael Johnston were Hawk listed players to play in the Grand Final.

Well, no one can say I don't finish what I start. There it is, Hawthorn's 2nds from 1925 to 2011. If I remember, I will add 2012 at the end of the season.

Thanks to those who have contributed, Thaihawk, mrcurly and WaxHawk especially.

To everyone else, thanks for reading.

Great work mate, a good read from start to finish. This really has been the story behind the success of the Hawks over the past 5 decades and more. Plenty of almost champions - many of which were playing in an era where they had limited opportunity at success due to the depth of talent on our senior list.

BTW - Now you have finished this you should compile the history of the Hawk little league comp from 1970 - 2012, profiles on every player, how many wore pigtails, scores, a 'where are they now' section... :D
