Very specific query sorry - looking for who coached Hawthorn's reserves in 1979. The club / historian doesn't have the info, so I'm hoping one of the clever sleuths on here might find it.

According to the club, John O'Mahony finished coaching in 1978 and Des Meagher took over in 1980, but they don't know who did it in 1979.

According to report of a pre-season practice match Hawthorn v Richmond in The Age, 19 March 1979 p29 the coach was Ross Smith (ex St Kilda).

You absolute legend. Thanks!

Don't suppose you could be enticed to have a look for the other Unknowns?
1927, 31, 32, 34, 44, 45, 46?

Hope it's okay for me to help out!

This says Ern Utting was reappointed for the job in 1935, and that would be his third year in a row.: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/204276711

Les. Carbarns was reappointed in 1931: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/205832213

This has Carbarns as captain and coach from 1926-1931: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/189120711

Brilliant gets - thanks heaps!

So that leaves 32, and 44-46.

Those articles confirm '32 wasn't Utting or Carbarns... going to be tricky to find.

Thanks again. I've been looking for these for a while, should have posted on here ages ago, obviously!

Nothing has shown up so far for 1932, and I haven't tried looking yet for 1944-46.

There is more than one Hawthorn suburban paper on Trove for 1914-18 period, but might be a while before the period of this thread's interest becomes available online.

Suspect it could come down to a visit to SLV to check micro-film copies.

Looks like Pat Keary for 1932: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/205094735

It must have been around that year (or more likely the next) when he started as manager of the Hawthorn Seconds, a position he held for (at least) 25 years, and the Seconds B&F was named after him: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/22437717

I've had a decent look now and I'm not getting anywhere with the 40's! Surely something has to show up?!

It looks like it was Alf Hurley for 1945: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/979828

This is most likely referring to Hurley being captain, but could it mean coach for 1944? Probably just captain, but worth looking into: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/11815216

This says he was appointed captain in 1944: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/206780050

Hurley was (again) appointed captain for 1946 (doesn't mention coaching but perhaps he did it again?): https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/22232679

So he had the coaching job in 1945, but still not sure on 1944 and 1946. I'd say it was pretty likely, since he was captain in those two years, but not at all proven at this stage.

I'm wondering if you've seen any of this? You have Dave Elliman doing the job in 1925 but he seems to have only done it in the latter part of the year: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/184839993 (14 Aug 1926)

I presume this is meant to be Eugene (Glynn), who played for Hawthorn in the VFA: https://s.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL Tenant/Hawthorn/PDFs/VFA.pdf
1578043120355.png

Elliman got a permit to go from Hawthorn to Hawthorn Seconds in June 1925 (and didn't play for the senior team again), so perhaps he took over as coach some time after that?: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/155769527 (6 Jun 1925)

I haven't found anything about Glynn being replaced during 1925, but it seems to have happened.
