I'd rather be in Hawthorn's position right now instead of Essendon

Essendon can only dream about winning another premiership, something that won't be happening for many decades to come.

It was great to see the era finish last night.

The problem with Hawthorn is the bottom 5 players are genuine hacks.

Hopefully Hodge retires, its getting sad watching him slow down so much. Now all he does is go around thumping blokes.

Cope with what though?
I would have thought that was obvious. The single handed destruction of your club by a favourite son, making them a laughing stock, and forever tagging them as 'that team that ran an organised doping program'. Lashing out at the club your aforementioned favourite son said he "hated more than anyone else" , and the jealousy of which triggered his ill conceived doping program is probably a very understandable coping mechanism. The final indignity still to come when your brownlow medalist hands his medal over to our best midfielder.

Destruction hey?

Hmmm last I checked they still seemed to be around.

Seems like they've got a fairly straightforward membership campaign to run too.

Coping just fine it would seem. :D

The problem with Richmond is that their bottom 16 players are genuine hacks. Sad thing is, we are apparently chasing one of them! :D

That looks like 3.

At least we keep our hacks in the bottom 5. Richmond has them all over their list, and throughout their footy department and administration. Looking forward to Vickery kicking a bag against your mob next year.

You're going to love trade period, because one of those "hacks" has been approached to be in your colors in 2017.

They should certainly shop Hodge to GWS or as a make-weight for JOM.

But I'm interested in thoughts on Cyril Rioli going forward. He has been an elite cherry-on-top player for the Hawks, an incredible finisher.

But now that the old guard are in decline, he will be one of the leaders of the new generation. Can he step up and shoulder more of the leadership load? He had a great season but worryingly went missing when the chips were down against the dogs..

We are hoping he steps up to Shane Edwards like status next year. So does blaisee.

Really well with my 3peat memorabilia ;)

Kinda sad you go searching for posts to quote on dude, get a hobby.
Not as sad as him displaying his obsession like a badge by quoting our number of VFL/AFL grand finals in his signature. I'm not sure what is sadder, the Hawthorn reference in his sig, or the fact that he counts VFA flags in his club's flag count. The very definition of a minnow club fan - can only define their club in reference to the mighty hawks.

Do not talk about Richmond's next coach that way! :drunk:

Can you name a club that's contending that doesn't have the majority of its quality in its most experienced players?

Hawthorn don't need a major rebuild, and any suggestion that they do is crapola.
Name me the players currently on the list that replace Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis, Burgoyne and Gibson?

Why do the replacements have to already be on our list? Yes, they'll be hard to replace, Mitchell especially is effectively irreplaceable. Sounds like we might have replacements for two next year, and we might get another couple of years out of at least two of them, leaving us another two years to get replacements for them.

Nobody on the current list can replace those four. That's why Hawthorn will be very active during this years trade/free agency period stockpiling on midfielders in that 22-25 years old range and some key position players.

O'Meara replaces Lewis and Tom Mitchell is essentially a like for like and he replaces Sam Mitchell. There's the center square midfield sorted for next season.

Throw in Roughead at full forward and Vickery at center half forward, Burton and Sicily with a pre-season under their belts and our forward-line will be significantly stronger in 2017.

Even if I chose to name a couple of youngsters in Lovell and Stewart as two future mids that Clarkson is keen on, I reckon you'd argue that they've shown nothing, so there's not much point.

We're odds on to add O'Meara and Mitchell during the trade period, Brand comes in to push Gibson to the flank....so there's 3 of the 4 named with understudies.

Then we return to the 2017 AFL season with Burton, Sicily, O'Brien, Hardwick and Pittonet all having been given a sniff in 2016, dependent on what happens in trade week.

A major rebuild? No, not required.

Some additions to replace the older heads, sure.
