The Hawthorn VFLW start their defence of the 2018 premiership with a match at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday morning against NT Thunder. The NT Thunder finished third on the ladder behind Collingwood and Hawthorn last season, and will be keen to get their assault on the premiership under way with a win over the Hawks.

Unfortunately, the defence of the VFLW premiership didn't get off to the best of starts, with the Hawks going down to the Thunder by 22 points (6.13.49 to 4.3.27). The Hawks trailed at every change and simply couldn't keep up with the Thunder. It doesn't get much easier for the Hawks, as they travel to Victoria Park to play Collingwood at 2pm on Saturday, 18 May 2019.

Round 3 of the VFLW campaign sees the Hawks travel to Bill Lawry Oval in Northcote to take on the winless Darebin Falcons. Neither club has got off to an ideal start so far this campaign, so barring an unlikely draw, one of the two teams will get their first win for the season on the board. The Hawks posted a significant 42-point win over the Darebin Falcons last weekend to finally get their premiership defence under way and they'll be looking to record consecutive wins when the Hawks host the Seagulls as the curtain raiser to the VFL match later tomorrow at Box Hill City Oval. The Hawks welcome back premiership player Phoebe Williams for her first game of the season after being unavailable for selection in the first three rounds.

First bounce is at 11.30am tomorrow.

The Hawks made it two wins on the trot after defeating the Seagulls by nine points (4.11.35 to 4.2.26) at Box Hill City Oval in the curtain raiser to the VFL game later that afternoon. Beeson (2), Hutchins and Perkins kicked the goals for the Hawks, while Whiting (2), Hope and Crawford kicked the goals for the Seagulls.

The two consecutive wins have seen the Hawks climb into eighth position on the VFLW ladder, a game (and significant percentage) off top spot, currently held by the Bulldogs with three wins from three games and a percentage of 293.94% (compared to Hawthorn's 100.68%).

The Hawks have the bye in round 5 and won't play again until they take on arch-rivals Essendon at 11.30am on 15 June 2019 at Windy Hill.

The VFLW Hawks were the only team to record a victory over the Bombers, cruising to a comfortable 36 point victory against Essendon at Windy Hill last Saturday (8.8.56 to 3.2.20). The goals were shared around, with Flanagan kicking three, and single goals each to McWilliams, Dillon, Beeson, Membrey and Hutchins.

After a shaky start to the premiership defence, the Hawks have won three on the bounce and will look to carry their winning form when they host the Southern Saints as a curtain raiser to the VFL game later in the afternoon at Box Hill City Oval. The Southern Saints will be a tough test for the Hawks, as they currently sit fourth on the VFLW ladder, having won four from five games so far to start the season, and have in-form forward Caitlin Greiser, who is currently fourth on the goalkicking ladder in the VFLW with seven goals.

First bounce is at 11.50am.

In a low-scoring affair, the Hawks weren't quite good enough to hand the Saints their second loss for the season, going down by three points (2.2.14 to 2.15.17) at Box Hill City Oval last Saturday. The result snaps a three game winning streak and the Hawks currently sit 3-3 after six games. McWilliams and Gilder kicked goals for the Hawks, while Steiert and Shierlaw kicked goals for the Saints.

It doesn't get much easier for the Hawks, as they take on the Bulldogs who will be smarting from an annihilation at the hands of Collingwood last Saturday in Morwell (some could call it the "Morwell Massacre"). The Bulldogs were blown off the Morwell Recreation Reserve, going down by 74 points, 13.5.83 to 1.3.9. Despite the massive loss, the Bulldogs are in fifth position going into their game against Hawthorn, a game above the Hawks. The match will commence at 12.00pm tomorrow (29 June) at Victoria University Whitten Oval.

The Hawks enjoyed a 25 point victory over the Bulldogs to move into the top four for the first time this season. The Hawks kicked 4.9.33 to the Bulldogs' 1.2.8. The Hawks shared the goals between McWiliams, Dillon, Peschke and Perkins, while Van Dyk, Bevan, Beeson, Perkins, Dillon and Henderson were named among the Hawks' best.

In a curtain raiser to the VFL game later in the afternoon, the Hawks play the Geelong Cats in the VFLW with first bounce at 11.50am.

The Cats trail the Hawks by a win, having won three from seven matches so far this season, while the Hawks will be keen to keep pressure on the leading teams (Collingwood, Southern Saints and Richmond) with another victory, which would be Hawthorn's fifth from six games.

Unfortunately, the VFLW Hawks went down by seven points in a low-scoring affair at Box Hill City Oval last Saturday, 4.7.31 to 3.6.24. The Hawks held a 13 point lead at quarter time (2.2.14 to 0.1.1), but the Cats kept the Hawks scoreless in the second quarter, to go into half-time with a one point lead (2.3.15 to 2.2.14). The two teams were tied at three-quarter time on 3.5.23 apiece, but the Hawks could only manage a single behind in the last quarter, while the Cats kicked 1.2.8 to win the game by seven points.

The result leaves the Hawks at 4 wins and 4 losses after eight games played, a game behind the NT Thunder and the Western Bulldogs, and three games behind the top two of Collingwood and the Southern Saints.

The Hawks have a good opportunity to return to the winners' list, as they take on Carlton on Saturday, 13 July at 11am at La Trobe University, Bundoora. The Blues are third from bottom on percentage, having won just one game from seven matches so far this season.

In round 11, Hawthorn VFLW enjoyed a 13 point win over Richmond to keep the Hawks' chances of defending their premiership well and truly alive. The Hawks took a one point lead into quarter-time (2.1.13 to 2.0.12) but kept the Tigers scoreless in the second quarter and kicked two goals to lead 4.4.28 to 2.0.12 at half-time. It was goal for goal in the third quarter, with the Hawks kicking 2.2 to the Tigers' 2.2, so it was "as you were" going into the fourth quarter. Although the Tigers outscored the Hawks in the last quarter, they couldn't bridge the gap and the Hawks enjoyed a morale-boosting win, after drawing with Carlton the previous weekend (3.6.24 apiece).

The Hawks have the bye this weekend.

Having had the bye last weekend, the Hawks should be freshened up for a big game, with the Hawks trailing Melbourne University by half a game. Realistically, it's unlikely that the Hawks could finish higher than fourth this season, with Collingwood a game clear on top of the ladder (having won 10 of 11 games) and the Southern Saints, in second, two games clear of third-placed Western Bulldogs.

But if last week's results are any guide, Melbourne University will be tough for the Hawks to knock off at home, as they thrashed Carlton by 46 points (12.9.81 to 5.5.35) at Arden Street last Saturday. Angelis and Ashmore each kicked three goals for Melbourne University, while Saxon-Jones kicked two, and Abbatangelo, Duffin, Gillespie-Jones and Garner each kicked a goal. The win for Melbourne University was set up in the first quarter, when they raced to a 32 point lead, courtesy of kicking 5.3.33 to 0.1.1. The lead extended by half-time, with Melbourne University kicking three goals to one in the second quarter, and while Carlton cut the lead slightly in the third quarter, they were already out of the contest.
