I for one would love to see max up and firing, but logic tells me that not many guys have come back from 3 reco's. Exspecially playing in such a vunerable position as ruck.

They kept him on the list for next year so obviously the Hawthorn Medical Staff have faith in his recovery. I'm pretty sure David Schwartz had 3 knee recos.

I think the big improver will be Shiels. I expect him to get some of the biggest jobs as a tagger. He will develop as Sewell did.

If the injuries are kept to a minimum then there will be awesome players missing out.

B: Ladson, Croad, Gibson
HB: Guerra, Schoenmakers, Burgoyne
C: Bateman, Mitchell, Young
HF: Rioli, Franklin, Lewis
F: Hodge, Roughead, Osborne
Foll: Renouf, Sewell, Shiels (tag)
Int: Taylor, Birchall, Ellis, Brown
Emerg: Gilham, Hooper, Dowler

Getting Ladson and Young back in that team are crucial.

Burgoyne should be allowed to ease back into football off half back. As the season goes on that half back flank should be given to one of Burgoyne, Mitchell, Sewell or Lewis - depending on whoever needs to lift their confidence at the time.

Maybe we should only play the 1 ruckman and have Roughead play a few minutes there from time to time. This allows us to play Dowler instead of Taylor or Renouf which makes us more versatile.

I think Brown is the ideal player to come off the bench. Instead of making a decision which end he plays before the game, maybe we could let the game dictate where he plays. He is the ideal player to patch up a problem area.

Hooper must be seen to earn his spot. He must play Box Hill early. I think by the finals he will be a key player in our forward line but he shouldn't just be given a spot based on potential.

People will think I am harsh on Gilham but his upside is nowhere near that of Schoenmakers. Gibson, Schoenmakers, Croad, Brown and Birchall are the guys I want to see play on the taller forwards even though some of those guys aren't really that tall themselves.

I would allow Hodge to do as he pleases. He is our best player and best leader. He reads the game as well as anyone I have seen. He should be given James Hird like freedom and go where he thinks he is needed.

Most importantly - the unsociable football needs to come back. I don't mind the odd suspension. If I see a Hawthorn player help his opponent up off the ground or any friendly gesture like that then I will vomit!!! We play best when nasty!!!!

Here is my attempt

Steven Gilham Ryan Schoenmakers Brent Guerra
Xavier Ellis Josh Gibson Grant Birchall
Chance Bateman Sam Mitchell Jordan Lewis
Michael Osborne Lance Franklin Cyril Rioli
Beau Dowler Jarryd Roughead Rhan Hooper
Brent Renouf Luke Hodge Shaun Burgoyne
Brad Sewell, Simon Taylor, Liam Shiels, Rick Ladson
Emg: Campbell Brown, Clinton Young, Beau Muston

Obviously Sewelly is in the best half a dozen players at the club but I like him coming off bench and being the leader of the second midfield unit. I also have F1 at full back because he has the size, strength and most importantly the quickness to go with the faster FF’s, it also allows Gilham to play on the 3rd tall. Also there was no way I could leave out Shiels after the year he had last year while juggling school commitments. He is going to be a gem:thumbsu:

P.S sorry Browny

S.Gilham as emergency? wtf he is our best defender allways gets the opp best 4wards

I don't want to be too critical of any Hawks player but if Gilham is our best defender we are in a lot of trouble.

The exercise was for people to pick Hawthorns best 22 in their own opinion - Gilham isn't in the best 22 in my opinion.

He uses the ball well and can be solid at times. I think Croad is a better player and I think Schoenmakers will probably be better too. If Croad doesn't make it back then I would happily have him back in my 22.

I always thought Gilham would be a good guy to play on the oppositions third tall forward but didn't we just give up a fair bit for Gibson to play that role?

what we gave up for gibson was to get him into our backline. as for his role/opponent i'd reckon it'll be horses for courses.schoey gets the biggest forward then gilham and gibson get the next two in which ever order makes sence and will probably swap if one of their opponents gets away.

campbell brown being the next option.

I just don't think we need Croad, Gilham, Gibson and Schoenmakers all in the one backline and I think Gilham is the fourth best player from that group.

If Croad doesn't come up then Gilham is a good replacement. I'm certainly not saying that Gilham is no good.

If we are fully fit this year then some quality players will have to play at Box Hill.

Thought I'd have a crack at it.

Does anyone think that Hooper will come in at the expense of Brown or Ozzie?
IMO I believe he was drafted into the side to play round 1 and I cant see him displacing Dowler.
Selecting this side next year is going to be a very very tough ask but what a great problem to have:)

Best effort so far CTH! Hooper should not be an automatic walk up, has to prove he wants to be there first. Croad, as much as I love his work, will never be same player again and will provide solid support rather than be the structure of the backline.
Also, I am a bit dissapointed with people leaving Birch out of their top 22. Total madness. Same with Youngy. (missed his run so much last year)

Most importantly, the club has put themselves into a situation where we have bodies to cover injuries and poor form that we lacked last year which should in turn result in greater competition for spots.:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

I agree "Carn the Hawks" best selection I've seen yet, provided Young is fit and taking into account Croad not ready for round 1.

Lot of people putting a lot of faith in Schoenmakers, some hawks faithful blinded a bit, remember second year player! Hope he does break out!!

Agree with the sentiment of others that this is the group assuming Dowler is justifying his selection.

The only issue I have is Muston being an emergency ahead of Shiels, Tuck, Morton, Moss. Shiels is the 23rd man I reckon.

Im not, I just ignore people who have a 22 without Birch. He is a very good player, all be it defensively he isn't great in the air, when playing on a small, he dominates them and then he is our best rebounder it Luke plays in the middle or up forward.

Birchall will be an AA in his career, bookmark it:thumbsu:

I hope Birchall is an AA player but he would want to improve on 2009. He's not alone there though. I think Birchall and Campbell Brown would be two guys that would be desperate to restore their reputations as A-graders.

I dont think we will have to bookmark it for long because 2010 could be the year I reckon.
If things go to plan, with Gibson & Schoey playing thier roles, and fingers crossed Ellis and Ladson fit and firing, Birch can be released to run and carry and murder oppositions again with his rebound.
He will have a much better year than Sam Gilbert did this year and he just missed:thumbsu:

I know what you mean.

That spot in the emergencies was the biggest toss-up for me, it was definitely between Shiels and Muston.

Your probably right that Shiels is ahead of Beau at the moment, I just have a really big soft spot for Beau and couldn't leave him out.

That's one of the things that I'm really looking forward to next year; seeing the likes of Shiels, Muston, Whitecross, Tuck, Morton and Moss hopefully getting some opportunities to perform in a more stable team, allowing them to develop and play some very entertaining footy.

Here's my team.

I haven't included croady as I don't believe he'll play senior footy again unfortunately.

And what were some people doing having Birchall out of the team and the overated Hooper in the side, or worst still on the ground!

Guerra Gilham Schoenmaker

Birchall Gibson Ellis

Bateman Mitchell Burgoyne

Hodge Roughead Rioli

Brown Franklin Osborne

Renouf Ladson Young Dowler Taylor
Lewis
Sewell Whitecross Shiels Savage
