Sure Hawthorn had a power team in the 80's. But do we have to be reminded about it 20 years later?
Hawthorn fans don't dwell on the 80's any more than any other group of fans reminisce about their most recent flag, or in the case of Geelong or Melbourne fans, their most recent Preminary Final victory. If any Dee fan over the age of 30 mouths off at me, I just remind them of 87, 88 and the 12 year winning streak and that tends to shut them up. If not, then I remind them of the time they voted to merge. That never fails. Bitter and twisted, the lot of 'em. More than any other group of fans, they know deep down their club is a joke.

For as long as I've followed the game Hawthorn have been very unsuccessful, so I'm always bemused and bewildered when they talk about what a great club they are.
What a crock of sh*t! You tell me one Hawthorn fan who goes around saying what a great club we are. We leave that sort of guff to the Essendon and Collingwood fans. They're the ones who are obsessed with talking about "what a great club they are".

You know what bemuses me? Melbourne fans who live in denial. 40 years of failure, punctuated by fleeting moments of small consolation and little victories. For 25 years they missed the finals, then the league changed all of the rules to help out the minnows like Melbourne. And how have the mighty Dees managed in this brave new world of draft, salary cap and handouts? Hmmm. Moderately successful, yes. A couple of top 4 appearances, another Grand Final thrashing, several failed merger attempts and living hand to mouth, completely dependent on charity.

A grand old flag, indeed. Pfft!

They need a decent coach.
Clarkson has been coach for 2 seasons. When he took over, we'd just finished 15th with 4 wins. In his second season we finished 11th with 9 wins. You have no idea if he can coach or not. Like most of the crap that you write about us, your views are tainted by your deep-seated dislike of the Brown and Golds.

Good luck in 2007. Now or never for the Dees. Should be interesting to see how the flag-tilt and Daniher's gameplan holds up under pressure. And when things inevitably start to turn sour in the years after that, let's hope Joe Gutnick lets bygones be bygones and bails out your "great" club once again.

Gee. A lot of anger there. Bet you feel better getting that off your chest. Most clubs have there droughts. Hawthorn have, North have, Sydney had the longest and we still happen to be in ours. And its going to be all the more sweeter when we do break through.

I don't live in denial at all. The one thing I like about Hawthorn is that they said no to the merger, it was a time when members were told 'merge or die' nevermind that thousands of Melbourne members were locked out of the vote. And weren't North about to merge when fitzroy were snatched away from them? It was an interesting time. One that won't be repeated. We're here to stay Chewy, no matter how much of joke you think we are, or our 12 flags to Hawthorns 9 are.

And I think Daniher has been a good coach. 6 final series in 9 years - in a period rife without interstate salary cap concessions and dominance. We don't have the best resources, but here we are the best-performed Victorian team. He's also built a team that doesn't need 4 years at the foot of the ladder to show something. No rebuilding required. Our pick 60's are coming up trumps. Clarkson has no idea. Anyone who watches the game and the awful brand of football Hawthorn play would know that. Hawthorn have good youngsters, as do many teams. But no flag is guaranteed, this aint the 80's anymore Chewy.

Hodge & Mitchell too old eh?
Depends how long we are talking.

Crawford isn't the captain right now, why would Hodge be captain in 5-6 years when you're hoping to be top 4??

I was just thinking the same thing..

By the way, since when has Oakley-Nicholls been considered a leader in the same class as Deledio and Murphy?
Oakley-Nicholls is a better leader than Deledio, I'm telling you that now. I know you wouldn't know much about him yet, but leadership wise him and Murphy were the clear standouts of the 2005 draft from all the info I've read.

Did you know some clubs had JON rated as the #1 draft pick ahead of Murphy?

IMO Murphy has it all over Deledio in everyway.
So impressionable

You only say that because he's been in the spotlight. You see Murphy get 22 possies and go "wow he has talent" because it's the only footy that's on.... meanwhile Deledio is racking up 30 possessions and kickings goals in a non-televised game.

Yes Murph is good but how can you compare him to someone you haven't been watching? Going by Big Footy trolls they will always make players look bad unless they are the in-thing.

Deledio has some leadership qualities but is quite fragile and doesn't have that killer hard at it instinct that would make a great captain.
LOL fragile?

Deledio weighs more than Judd already!

He's a tank :D

Hawthorn Kids = Massively Over-rated.

Bottom line, they have yet to win a game. Come back to me when they do. BTW; how many decades has their 5 year plan been running for?

He may weight more than Judd but he sure as hell is alot more timid, just doesn't have the hard at it instinct like players of the ilk of Mclean Hodge Murphy Judd Voss Buckley that make great captains :thumbsu:

If it'll make you happy, when Chris Newman becomes captain in a few years Deledio can be the "spiritual leader" like Ben Cousins :D Just for you

Its not about making me happy, i couldn't care less, its for your clubs sake.
No good, you can't respect someone as a spiritual leader who isn't mentally strong or hard at the footy.

Thats why Deledio won't make it as a captain. :thumbsu:

Errrr. Can you explain that again for all of us dummies. I don't follow you...
I was conversing with two different posters on two different topics Chewy - the 4 quotes you have collected of mine do not all go together. Though, you probably know that, and are trying to be a smartarse... either that or else you actually are dumb like Moss Rocket.

And what should we call your response?

A typical Claude Balls-up?
Just noticed this post - what have I preceded this with that warrants your opinion? It has nothing to do with you - I wasn't even bagging Hawthorn:confused: You are one random mofo. I suspect you once barracked for Carlton and were beaten out of it as a youngster by ******** older siblings or something... hence the confounding affection for a team that you don't officially support.

Couple the above post of yours with the gross misrepresentation of other peoples quotes on your part, and I would say:

Chewy = 15 years old (or at least your mental age is thereabouts)

Third year of rebuilding you Fu%^wit. Takes time to build a side capable of winning a flag.
Problem is tw@t that in a few years your only decent players will be off the scene: Crawford, Dixon, Vandenburg, Croad.

At which stage you will have no midfield and no key defenders and no ruckman. What you will have is a team full of forward pocket and half back flank types, with the odd flashy player (yes you Franklin) who will bob up and score a few goals every 4-5 games. Then I bet Clarkson will be rabbiting on about another rebuilding period.

Best you crack out a hyper-colour shirt, put on some acid wash jeans, bang on some Bon Jovi and relive the 80s

Hawthorn.. how many decades has their 5 year plan been running for?
Get with the program! Our 5 year plan went out the window when Scwabbie was sacked. Dermie drew up the blueprint for a 2 year plan to get us back into the finals, but this was vetoed by Dunstall, who implemented his own 3 year plan, commencing with the signing of Clarkson, who soon dispensed with the 3 year plan and decided upon a cunning 4 year plan. However, when we hired master strategist Chris Pelchen to be our sergeant-at-arms, it was decided we'd embark upon a revolutionary 7 year plan. According to club insiders, we are currently 4 months ahead of schedule. We WILL succeed. There is no doubt. It's our destiny...

Why stop there? Scrap the 7 year plan and start a 10 year plan, or even better yet a 25 year plan like ours.

I heard about that one!

I reckon we could learn a lot from your 80's ploy of rotating the coach's position on an annual basis. In recent history, we've been torn between that model for success and Melbourne/Geelong method of hanging to the same coach for a decade.

Either way, I think we should bring in our own Roar-meter. It makes absolutely no sense, but it would keep our fans amused in the interim.

Carlton have Marc Murphy to lead the team of the future. Richmond have Deledio and JON. Hawthorn currently have no great talents with leadership, much like St Kilda (which has attributed to their lack of success).
You are so biased it's not funny. You bemoan our lack of leadership, disregarding natural born leaders like Hodge and Mitchell (who have actually proven something), and offer up Deledio and JON for your club.

FWIW, St Kilda has some great young leaders as well.
