St Kilda wants Lenny Hayes to play on next season

The Saints plan to place no pressure on Hayes and will honour his decision.

Dermott Brereton said that putting Hayes' tremendous football ability aside, as a football citizen he is in the top office.

"He is somebody who is up there with the players who we all admire," Brereton said.

"And you would hate to think that somebody comes along and might do a number on him in several games because his body won't allow him to move the way he wants."

But Brereton said there was something admirable about a player in Hayes' situation being prepared to cop punishment so he could give young players leadership and guidance.

"That's a pretty selfless person who is willing to put their reputation in the final 12 months up for somebody to throw darts at because they wanted to give to some young players in their club."

I can honestly say I hate the idea of Lenny retiring, he's only 18 months older than me!

Makes you realise just how quick an AFL player's career is, even for the so called 'veterans'!

Have I missed some inside info on Lenny retiring or something? You guys seem very certain.

I want him to play on as long as he warrants a place in our best 22 which right now he certainly does.

He has said that if we don't look like making finals he will likely retire and has said that a few times and let's face it we won't be playing them for few years will be 34 next season he along with Blake, Kosi & Milne should all retire on a high IMO. (My thoughts anyway)

Fair enough. I think he still has a lot to give on the field as a player, leader and teacher for the next generation. He could play another couple seasons, get to 300, maybe even be around for our resurgence? Who knows, a man can dream.

Lenny will do another year, its obvious from interviews he wants to stay longer but is just unsure if his body can take it.
