It wasn't so long ago McConaughy would've been scorned as a candidate for a show like this!

I like Pitt but nah I don't think he can match MM. Maybe Woody.

Still, it's a massive get for the show. Sounds like they can take their pick.

The other thing with Pitt is he also has so much production experience which they'll no doubt utilize with the other two moving on.

Well give me something here. Explain how the performances I mentioned weren't good. Explain the comment "He's the same b-grade wannabe tough guy regardless of the character he plays". What exactly are you referring to?

I believe his acting prowess is measured on very short spectrum. He's incapable of playing a truly vulnerable character with great effect (barring Moneyball - where he was playing a sportsman). In his attempts to do so the best he can do is a poor version of silent introspection.

True Romance? It's like saying Steve Buscemi was great in Billy Madison.
Seven? Intense? I laughed. Though I love the movie, his acting in the final scene literally makes me cringe and borderline ruins the movie.
Burn After Reading? Hardly a deep character, though he did play it well. Take from that what you will.
Oceans Films & Thelma and Louise? Basically what I said, but everyone has to make money.
Jesse James? Strong silent type. Brooding and looking off into the distance isn't acting.
I haven't seen Tree of Life sorry.
Benjamin Button, Meet Joe Black, Killing Them Softly, Troy - Silent, brooding, contemplative. And poor at it.

Sorry I just don't rate his acting prowess. Don't get me wrong, to each their own, he just ain't for me despite playing one of my top 5 characters of all time in Tyler Durden.

Ok thanks for that, much better for discussion! Definitely agree on the little merit of his True Romance role. I was merely addressing the point of him always playing the same character.

I'm definitely surprised you've seen Jesse James though tbh. His one-on-one scene with Garret Dillahunt is immense. Brooding is not acting, can't disagree on that, but filling the screen with sheer presence and a look is, and this scene is acting perfection. Another example is the one with the Ford brothers in their lounge room. He really isn't doing much but he's just terrifying. Again regarding Seven, I was talking about diversity of role and performance. I agree his acting at the end isn't good, and he has similarly poor moments in TAOJJ when doing the loud work; it's just not his thing. I mentioned in a Leo DiCaprio thread that combined he and Brad Pitt would be the perfect actor. DiCaprio nails all the big, loud, OTT moments, while Pitt excels at the quiet intensity.

Now that I think about it, he isn't dissimilar in strengths to McConaughey. Known mostly for looking good, but actually legitimately good actors when sticking to their strengths.

The scene you mentioned with the Ford brothers was good. I think there was more than just his presence that made the scene tense though.

I think you maybe misunderstand about my same character comment - I was being a bit of a smart arse with pantskyle - I meant even though he plays different characters his acting tends to be the same. Which as I mentioned is the quiet, brooding, looking off into the distance type.

Upon reflection Pitt has a far better resume to McConaughey (prior to this year), but it's my belief that Pitt has been carried by some very strong productions though. In reality like McConaughey he could surprise, but I'm very, very sceptical as I believe we've seen everything that Pitt can do, and in my opinion I don't think he'll measure up.

You watched all his shitty rom-coms?

Maybe...

I'll watch almost anything once and I'm married with one tv. I've seen a fair few movies I'd rather not admit to or remember. Like Gravity for example.

You didnt like gravity?

Not at all. Some of the shots were amazing and I can see how it would've been very entertaining in IMAX, but Sandra Bullock's acting and the script was horrible.

I went into it with an open mind despite knowing that Bullock isn't the best actress, but her whining/whimpering and her character shat me to no end. And they don't just pick randoms off the street to go into space at a days notice. Astronauts are on auto-pilot in times of catastrophe; everything in space has become instinct after months of intense training on Earth. Bullock's character couldn't even remember not to let her tools go floating away. And then she climbs onto the shore at the end with this heroic music playing like where supposed to be inspired?

**** I'm getting angry about it now!

(Don't get me wrong - I'm a firm believer in each to their own, I don't think less of people for liking different stuff to me. If we were all into the same shit the world would pretty boring place.)

Bullock was typical bullocking worst, but I still enjoyed it. Captured the remoteness and fear of space perfectly
Please tell me you loved Clooney's performance though

The use of silence was great, but I like shots of the Earth from space on their own without a bad storyline ruining it.

I don't mind Clooney most of the time anyway, and his character was a refreshing part of the movie. So yes I did like his performance, wouldn't say loved though.

Why is this so hard for people to believe?

More overrated then North Melbourne's chances of playing finals
8.1 on IMDB, 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 96 on Metacritic, with an 8.0 user score. Say what you will about these sites but they very clearly indicate both critical and public success for the movie. With that sort of positivity about the film, I think it's fair enough to question the minority who didn't enjoy it.

Doesn't mean you're in the wrong though, of course.

Personally, expectations have a big outcome on my final opinion of a movie. I think my high expectations is why I ended up thinking Gravity was so poor, and I can say the reverse for Slum Dog Millionaire.

Didn't affect The Dark Knight though.

So HBO have decided to enter True Detective into the Emmys TV show category as opposed to the TV Movie/Miniseries where it's arguably more suited. Bit of a grey area really, particularly given none of the cast are expected to return for the next season.

So this means it'll be True Detective vs Breaking Bad. Not to mention House of Cards and GoT etc.

McConaughy vs Cranston for best actor

Cranston in season 5 of BB was some of the best acting i've ever seen at the time but how do you split these two?

McConaughy hands down.
