Funnily enough I've been rewatching season 1 the last couple nights.

Incredible television. Season 2 was never gonna live up to it though it was okay in itself. I think TD season 1 will be my favourite season of anything for some time.

Indeed. Don't think I've been as enthralled by a TV show as much as S1. Doubtful I will be again.

Wish I felt that way but S2 was a bad bad joke. Unlike S1, the story wasn't that interesting, dialogue was often comedic & Vaughn was simply awful for most of it (not entirely his fault as he should never have been let anywhere near such a project) & given his character was central to well basically everything, it all suffered as a result, well it did for me. I stuck with it to the bitter end, but that was done under protest.

No Woody & Matt? No TD....

The story in season two was more interesting and that was part of the problem, the story in season 1 was simply a murderer, the intrigue was merely dancing shadows and red herrings. Simplicity allows more room for meticulous artistry.

Vaughn was fine too, not sure what people expected. Kitsch and McAdams were far worse. Their stories were bloated and added nothing. Cut Kitsch, tone down McAdams role/background and had it simply about the Farrell/Vaughn story and it would have been golden.

Seeing as lots felt strongly one way or another about it indicates it had issues. Overall it was poorly done esp in comparison to 1.

Probably true and whether it says more about me or the show (season 2), I found it hard to actually keep up with what was going on.

Huh? Are you saying people should've been prepared for his mediocre performance?

You say mediocre, I say he played the character as the character should be played. A greedy stoic man is a simple man. He was believable as that. Some of his dialogue was crap, but tonally he was fine.

Agree it was hard to follow, cut Kitsch and Mcadams and it's a solid story about two damaged men on opposing sides tied to each other trying to be the best men they can.

Okay, how is that relevant to "what people expected"?

It was simply a poor nomenclature.

My point being he was believable but people were upset he wasn't McConaughey. Which set perceptions negatively from the inception of season 2 and overshadowed what was otherwise good television.

Indeed, I had Pandora-withdrawals after the first season. It's odd, I only watched through it once but could remember most of it so vividly. The second season was just a shambles for me, could not make it beyond the third episode. It was technically interesting and had a great score, but S1 was spellbinding, the interwoven narrative and the way the characters engaged with it was so well-crafted. Also, perhaps it was that occult storyline and the existential questions it opened up that commanded attention, whereas with S2 I just dgaf

The Vince Vaughan hate in here is a tragedy, I get that he was cheesy AF at times but that wasn't bad acting or poor writing from NP, it was a part of that characters identity and it influenced pretty much every single decision he made right up until the end. That's just who Frank was, VV just did exactly what was asked of him and he did it convincingly.

Vince Vaughan has a limited range as an actor but I'd blame the writing/direction for the TD's lackluster season 2 before any of the actors performances. That said although I enjoyed season 1 I felt it relied too much on the mystery that they teased viewers with throughout the season that at the end of the day did not amount to anything of substance. I felt duped when I realised that pretty much all of it was a red herring.

A lot of fans seemed to be fine with that but the pseudo philosophy stuff didn't do anything me, I can find my fix for that in books if that's what I'm after.

Its not canceled. its still on indefinite hold while Nic Pizzolatto is working on other stuff for his HBO output deal. It could be like Curb and comeback in a few years when he has time, and hopefully then he can patch things up with Cary and get the crew back together the direction was also a huge step back in season 2
For anyone that saw season 1 and appreciated the direction, check out Cary Fukunaga's film Beasts of No Nation.

Such a well made film.

Alright, I see this criticism of season 1 all the time, what exactly did people want to happen with the conclusion?

I lasted 2 or 3 episodes of season 2. Not even pretty Tim Riggins could keep me interested.

Reading this thread though I'm thinking maybe I should go back and finish it.
I don't think you missed much.

It was alright. Solid.

Certainly not bad like some people have stated, but it wasn't great.

I thought Colin Farrell was really good, and Rachael McAdams quite decent, too.

Some fantasy inter dimensional crap probbly

Plebs

This is what I'm thinking people must mean. What a cop out that would've been.

In their investigations of a ritualistic murder/s the detectives delved into clues that led them to an occult ring that they came to suspect consisted mainly of people who held positions of power in the community.

That was what hooked into the show, the pseudo philosophy stuff I could take or leave, it's definitely not what interested me about the show.

Although I did roll my eyes a few times when Rusty went on and on about it but I tolerated it because the season story arc had piqued my interest enough to want to watch it through to the last episode.

But at the end of the day it was only the mentally impaired minion who faced any sort of justice in what I consider to be an underwhelming conclusion to the season.

Had I known from the beginning that the focus of the show was going to be on a character study of Rusty with the murder mystery a poorly developed after thought than I wouldn't have bothered tuning in in the first place.
