Anyone else notice how much gold (yellow) Tuttle was wearing in the scene where Cohle interviews him at the school? Gold tie, gold handkerchief in his pocket, gold watch, gold ring etc.

Maybe next years detectives can investigate what happened to Edward Nortons career.

Seriously though great suggestion and I am now hoping it happens.

Funnily enough went on IMDB and I see he is going to be in a movie called Birdman that is about an actor whose career goes downhill after he plays an iconic superhero. Ironically or maybe deliberately Michael Keaton is the lead.

I haven't been getting alerts for this thread, but there is no way the paintings a few pages back are lazy art direction.

Possibly something the abused kids see maybe a wall in the dungeon and the daughter has drawn it and the crazies have painted it?

Whoever does art direction and cinematography on this show deserves all kinds of awards

Wouldn't think so - it's not just a similar drawing, its an exact (enlarged) replica. Don't know what to make of it, because its an exact replica I'm actually leaning towards it being a production mistake. The episodes were all shot before anything aired so, while its likely they knew they had a decent show, I don't know if anyone could have predicted the obsession and level of analysis thats currently happening.

But yeah, I agree that it would be a strange mistake to make for a show this meticulously crafted.

I thought maybe the painting of the flowers might be the view the abused kids had out of the dungeon via that ventilation fan? Especially given the location of LaDoux's house/shed.

Oh, I agree completely. I merely canvassed the range of possibilities earlier.

The spiral also appeared as a background drawing presumably painted by one of the 2 Hart girls. And I think it's fair to say that it is something that only the most dedicated of fans would've spotted. What I'm saying is that if this picture of flowers (tulips?) is a mistake/coincidence than you can use that argument to dismiss the spirals popping all over the place and their relevance to wider story arc.

Personally I don't think children are responsible for the 2 drawings as it looks almost like an exact replica. It could be someone in the Yellow King cult who's close to the Hart family that also has ties to the hospital who's behind the drawings.

The Yellow King doesn't physically exist. Despite Hart's savouring of Maggie's spaghetti, he isn't connected (apart from his daughter's abuse). Nick Pizzolato mentioned in a recap that he shot Ledoux in a split decision, as he was repulsed at what Ledoux was doing to those kids. Hardly the actions of someone involved (despite the theories of a cover up).
Also, Jay Laga'aia has been mooted as a potential cast member for season 2.

When I read this I literally sat there for 30 seconds with my mouth wide open looking outside dreaming about Idris in TD. Make it happen.

If not named the Yellow King there's certainly still someone running things that hasn't been caught as confirmed by the girl in the ward. With the picture I'm not sure I buy it being placed in both scenes just for atmosphere, it'd put Maggie in as a potential participant except I can't see Cohle not knowing by the present day or letting her stay free all that time because he didn't have the case he wanted.

Again I'll be surprised, and disappointed, if either Hart or Cohle end up being a part of it.

I'm pretty sure Hart or Cohle mentioned that for the number of disappearances they've only found one ritualised murder? Maybe a punishment or reward from within the cult?

Can't you just see him leaning over the table going hard at a suspect.... It's never going to happen but if they wanted to cement True Detective's place in TV folklore and crash every torrent site once a week that'd just about do it :)

Edit: I didn't realise this but True Detective's director wont be back for season two but the main star of his next project is...... Mr Idris Elba, seriously they need to be working something out.

You could say we as viewers are 'going mad' trying to figure out who The Yellow King is. Draws parallels to the book. The only problem I have with him not existing is that numerous people have attached meaning or significance to a person they see as 'The Yellow King' (whatever that means). Unless they're drug related 'visions' or hallucinations.

Hmm don't know if I agree with that - the picture in Marty's bedroom and the wall in the psych ward are not specific iconography intrinsically linked with the story like the spiral is.

Probably the worst episode of the season and it was still better than practically everything else out there. Also I'm intrigued by Rust ****ing Maggie, seemed so out of character for him. The depressive intellectual creature he is, probably would have seen himself above gratification, as its a primitive urge. Two possibilities, he was so focused on the case he lost emotional control or he was testing her and she failed hence the demonstrative behaviour afterward. Either way it takes a bloody good show to have me analysing it half a week later.
