My daughter gave me one for mothers day, but I'm worried that my TV's mightn't be compatible. I have two Akai TV's, one is 9 years old & the other 15.

Is there somewhere on the net, you can find out which model TV's aren't able to receive the HD signal?
 
If they're that old, it's most likely that they won't be able to display a HD output.

You should be able to receive digital TV though, which means you're "ready".

Here's a list of HD TV's.
 
Cheers for that, so I won't be able to get the One HD channel, or the other FTA HD channels?

Nope, you will still get channel One, but it will be in standard definition, not high definition.

It's still a good investment even if you don't have HD TV. There's some good viewing on ABC2 and One for example.

Note - that list of HD TV's I linked isn't comprehensive, but it contains most of the good TV's anyway.

ROFL, I don't think a 6 month old will be able to buy you much, you have to wait for over 20 years to reap what you sow. ;)

My son gave me a cordless phone which is red with black buttons, not those boring white ones. :D

You'll "get" everything that an HD (or SD) tuner is able to output, only an aged CRT TV will not translate the information very well. Digital by convention is widescreen so on a 4:3 TV set you'll have black bars top and bottom unless you compromise the signal. I suspect that your daughter might be dropping you a subtle hint that it's time to move to an LCD Full HD display.

LCD's have pretty much bridged the gap between it and plasmas nowadays.

There's a new Sony LCD with 200MHz, for example.
 
Buy an LCD to hook up your xbox360/PS3 or PC, but definitely not for movies, TV and sport.
200Hz is a con. Artificial frames of motion introduce as many problems as they attempt to solve.
 
I agree with what your saying, but it's not as bad as you make it out to be.

Obviously better blacks and superior viewing angles are two big advantages for watching movies on a plasma, but for sport it's pretty much even nowadays.

Two kinds of people own an large LCD TV:
- people who want to hook up their xbox 360/PS3/PC to it
- people who were duped in store

no one with any idea about picture quality would buy a large LCD TV (40" and above) over a plasma for watching television, sport and movies, not for another 2 years at least.

well i didnt get mine in a store, and yes i bought it for pc/ps3, however i see no difference in quality for footy/movies. and blu rays on it are awesome.

I also have a Bravia and the picture is amazing, especially for sport. It makes the Channel Seven broadcasts look good and that is saying something.

LCD's have definitely bridged the gap and have actually probably taken over now.
 
Pioneer Plasmas are still the best of the lot, but I think production has ceased.

It won't be long now until LCDs bridge the gap.

The biggest thing stopping me getting a flatscreen of any kind is the response rate - the few times I have seen AFL on a flat screen, it hasn't been awesome.

So people are getting good picture quality from the 7, 10 and Foxsport HD broadcasts? Are your TVs handling well the standard def AFL broadcasts also?

I'd love a widescreen TV to get a wider picture on the AFL broadcasts, just worry the fast moving camera action will be poorly reproduced compared to my 15 year old Song Trinitron CRT. Seems crazy to spend $2000 or so on a (quality) flatscreen if the AFL footage ain't reproduces flawlessly :).

Chennel Seven don't broadcast in HD (The bastards!:rolleyes:) and it still looks pretty good compared to my older TV. I have a Bravia and the quality of the TV makes up for Seven's lack of HD. The One HD footy games and the NBA are just superb picture. Definately worth spedning the money.

I am seeing over and over in these forums that Bravias are well rated - did you pick one because you knew it'd handle sport? It is an LCD isn't it? Which model have you got. Do you have that MotionFlow stuff turned on or off?

Seven don't do HD AFL :eek:?

I don't really know what MotionFlow is, I just plugged it in and turned it on. Haven't really adjusted anything since. Yes it is LCD and I have only heard good things about LCD. No idea what model it is either (I am not a tech-whiz as you can tell!).

Also Seven don't show any sport in HD. The finals might have been last year but not one match this year, nor was the Australian Open in HD even though they were filmed with HD cameras!!!

MotionFlow is Sony's answer to smoothing out highspeed action (http://www.sony.com.au/article/287655/productcategory/tvp-lcd-tv?site=hp_en_AU_i). Basically, 100Mhz MotionFlow means you are seeing twice as many frames per second as normal TV, 200Mhz MotionFlow means four times as many frames per second as normal TV. The TV creates a "transistional image" between true frames.

I have heard it makes things too smooth - that it looks great on cartoons but humans look unreal with it.

It is designed to make LCDs perform better with action - something Plasmas don't need.
