OK I just bought a new Sony Bravia and a PS3. But I've heard a lot about these HDMI cables yet I don't knnw what they do or are good for. I currently have the PS3 hooked up to the TV with the AV cable and it seems fine...will the HDMI cable make it better somehow?

Also the room whee the TV is has no ariel connection atm but there will be soon. Now do I need a special arial to get HD tv or just an ordinary one...This is what i'm lost on...

HDMI is essentially a cable that allows up to Full HD (1080p and 7.1) audio and visual. The advantage of it is that it is audio and visual in 1 cable. Check out your tv's model and see if it is 1080p capable (make sure it is 1080p, not 1080i), and if it is, it is definately worth getting one. Cables in the shops can be upwards of $70, so i bough mine off ebay for about $13 incl postage, and it works just as well. Your AV cables (red-white-yellow) will run at 480p, which will definately be noticable in difference. It really depends on how serious you are with your setup. If you want top of the line system, you will need a AV receiver with 1080p and HDMI, and a sound system capable of at least 5.1. Probably wouldn't bother with a blu-ray or dvd player, because the blu-ray player in the ps3 is one of the best on the market, as well as the ability to upscale dvd's to HD. On the subject of HD TV, i don't think its worth setting up or using a fixed aerial for it, I would however, just get foxtel which has all free to air channels plus more.

Man, once you get an HDMI cable hooked up to your PS3 you will be absolutely amazed. It is pretty.

Same situation as when I first got my Bravia and PS3.

Yes, the HDMI cable will make a huge difference - get one as soon as you can because it's worth it - the PS3 will automatically configure itself to run in 1080P as soon as it detects the cable, but the television remote also has a "gaming" setting which will make it look even better again (smoother image movement mainly).

An aerial can indeed pick up HD tv, but you will either get it or you won't. Just use the 'digital stations' menu from your remote, then 'search for signal' and it will take about 3 minutes to pick up any and all stations you can get with your current set up.

Lastly, once you get your HDMI cable pick up a few blu-ray movies - I'd recommend the Kingdom of Heaven director's cut and the Planet Earth BBC doco's - you will seriously be completely blown away by the picture quality. I still marvel at those two.

It's pretty much all been said, but I just have to re-iterate, DON'T SPEND MORE THAN $50 ON IT!. The salesman will try to con you into believing that the more expensive ones will give you better picture, they WON'T. It's all 1s and 0s. You can't improve on it no matter how expensive the cable.

Correct - it`s data. So, so long as it`s reasonably well made - it will be no better than the "gold plated" version.

Spot on guys, a good example though not for this thread is people with Foxtel getting SCART to Component cables...ONLY buy the Foxtel branded ones and you can pick one up at Harvey Norman for $40 (just barter it down from $50 they'll do it the mark up is ridiculous), do NOT SPEND $150 like some people do

The monster ones are the ones you need to watch out for.

They cost heaps more but offer no more or worse reception for HDMI.

Gold Plated are the ones you need as it actually does provide better quality, they are pretty cheap if you know where to pick them up, and are usually in every HDMI cable.

The term was a reference to expense not composition. Poor choice perhaps.

Dont bother with gold plated - makes no difference.
