What has West Coast got to offer you guys in all honesty?
They wont trade Judd or Gardiner and there highest pick is 10.

Fremantle on the other hand has pick 5 (potentially 3 if the blues get stripped).

If he wants to go then go Des.

I agree with Matthews. We need to be strong as a club. We have payed for him to move here, him , girlfriend and family members.
We can't let players hold us to ransome.
If he is not happy, let him go in the preseason draft. To Carlton.

Bet he is the last player to do it at any club.

He said last night that he'd rather stay than goto Carlton. I've never seen some one celebrate more with the crowd. He truly loves the attention he's getting - I can't see him going somewhere where he doesn't have a chance to get to the grand finals again (for a long time anyway).

I think the best thing that ever happened to him as a footballer was Lethakl dropping him last year. Hopefully now he can keep his head and determination going for next year (and further). He shouldn't keep relying on talent alone. Watcha dn learn from Black and Vossy and become a true star.

I heard an interview with him after the game. He indicated he would like to return to WA some day (that's not news), BUT ... unless I am mistaken, I think he also said he had made his decision already. I didn't hear exactly what he said, but when they went back to the commentry team, they were saying things like ... "Ooooooo .. interesting".
I hope he stays with Brisbane simply because as a Hawthorn supporter I am tired of these players who get homesick and go running home to mummy (Matthew Robran, Ben Allan, Darren Jarman, Daniel Chick, etc). They can really destroy a club. You plan your future around these guys and they just get up and leave, and you never get a good deal in return.
The system really needs to protect clubs a little better, the player has far too much freedom to go wherever he likes.

I hear what you say but the reality is that if a player is out of contract, you can't force him to stay against his will.

That's the way it works in a free democratic society and there's nothing clubs, the AFL or anyone else can do about it.

The best we can hope for in a footy club is to breed a culture where individuals(especially well paid players) will feel comfortable in their environment and have the desire to remain part of it, even if it involves giving up a little short term monetary gain or, as you say, running home to Mummy.

I know that what you say is correct about being in a democratic society. It's just that I grew up watching football in an era where players were far more loyal to their club, but I do realise that time has past.
Football is big business these days, but if I were running a company and one of my top executives decided to leave, I would be free to persue the person of my choice to replace them.
In a football club, if Headland were to return home, Brisbane would have to take what is offered to them as a trade, and I guarantee Brisbane wouldn't end up with the best of the deal.
If I were a Brisbane fan, the only trade I would entertain is to trade him to West Coast for Chris Judd.

There was an article in the Herald Sun today which stated that Leigh has said the club is not willing to negotiate with West Coast or Fremantle, so the only option that Headland really has is to nominate for the draft, which will result in him going to Carlton!! Victoria is only about 1.5 hours closer to home by plane, so it's not much of an option.

Let's hope he stays by choice!

The basic problem is that clubs get penalised for good list management and development. If you are too successful, the salary cap eventually ends up squeezing you.

You could have some kind of sliding scale where actual payments were treated as a percentage of notional payments under the salary cap, according to how long your players had actually been with your club.

For example:

First or second year players - 100% of payments taken into account under the Cap

Third year - 80%

Fourth year -70%

Fifth year -60%.......etc so that after 10 years , payments to 10 year players were virtually exempt.

The problem with this is of course, that we get back to the rich clubs being able to afford to keep their good long term players, while the poor clubs get to fight over the scraps or hope to get lucky under the National Draft from year to year.

It's a problem that just doesn't have a simple solution.

It mightn't have any solution at all.

That's really the intention though, in order to assist the equality of the competition.
