If Brisbane sticks to their guns and put Headland into the pre-season draft and Richmond wins the lottery we would br crazy not to sign him. Even if it was only for one year and then guaranteed to trade him home after 2003 it would be worth it in a couple of ways:

1) He would be a valuable player in the midfield/forward and help out our other young guns like Couglan & Rodan et al, and who knows he may like it so much he may want to stay on &

2) If he has another good season like this year W.C & Freo will be climbling all over themselves to pick him up and give up a hish draft pick or player - can you say Chris Judd?:)

great in theory omh but id say the salary cap will once again bite us in the you know where.
however if the bean counters at punt rd can come up with something then hell yeah go for it.

cheers!

T.O.O salary cap could pose a few problems but how much do you think Headland will demand if we facilitate him eventually getting home? He may take a few dollars less if we can accomodate him. With Knights gone and Torney maybe gone we may be able to squeeze him in (along with K Johnson) but we may need to offload one or two other players or have another player restructure.

It would be a careful juggling trick but it may be worth it.

I have thought this was a good idea and I heard Greg Miller talking about it tonight on 1278 3aw and how we were planning for this scenario if it played out that way.

what i find a bit puzzling is why wouldnt brisbane offer him a one year deal with the same senerio as we or any other side outside would do?.
regarding our salary cap unless we do off load a few more high priced players from our list i cant see us going for headland and johnson as well with the chance of missing out on headland in the pre-season draft.
sure if we could offload the likes of biddescombe then we would be in a position to target both johnson and headland but i cant see that happening.
like i said i would be all for it if we could but its a huge if.

cheers!

already have room for 6 players....
1....vacant 2002
2..... " "
3......(Knights/campbo)
4.....Huddo
5.......Sziller
6........Torney

fair bit of money available there

picks 4, 20 , 36, 52, 68, 84....PSD.

I'm sure brisbane will make a deal with someone over west...they won't want to flush a No. 1 pick just on principle

The only problem I can forsee with us picking up Headland if he nominates ofr the draft is:

What if he has an absolute shocker next season or suffers an imjury. We will still be forced to trade him, but at a significantly reduced value.

We could also end up with another Mark Merenda scenario, a guy who doesn't want to play with the club but is doing so to earn a quid until he can be traded.....for next to nothing.

All a bit too risky for me.

the odds are getting really long now....:D anyway , if he goes for nothing...that's how much he'll cost us...

BTW...AT MY club b and f count...the pres quietly revealed he'd spoken to our former player and draft prospect Jarred Mcveigh..seems all clubs spoke to him...but Richmond was the one that seemed to him the keenest. maybe we will too...he did well at the camp in endurance... amongst other tests,,....

headland to richmond

If Richmond/Carlton want him they will have to pay what Headland nominates as his price in the draft. Further he will nominate a one year contract with a stipulation he be traded to either WA club after the year.
That puts the WA clubs in a strong position - they know he has to be traded so they can offer poor choices/picks to Richmond. The only option would be to seek a guarantee of a first round draft pick.
Brisbane will do the deed with a WA club. It is in no club's ultimate interest to do otherwise. After all as Kerry Packer once said : we are all whores - its just a matter of the price!

Headland

Leigh Mathews may have backed himself into a corner with this one and have to honour his statements in order to save face.

I also don't believe that the WA clubs would play hard ball at the end of next season in trading for headland, whoever gets headland this year will get a good trade next year for him from WA.

I also think we are in the best position to get him rather than Carlton and the Saints.

Why?

Because you will be excluded from the preseason draft, and the Saints, well I'm sure that they'll pick up Matthew Allan in the preseason draft (to replace Spider).

Oh....I see. I didn't realise you were in charge of AFL salary cap investigations....and I also didn't know you were Allan's manager.

Rightio.

Anyway, despite losing Spider, do you really think the Saints would choose him over Headland, who even though he may only play a year, would have a big trade value anyway?

he would be great.. so would the money we need

Personally, I hope the Lions stick by their guns and force Headland into the draft. Not simply so that we can get a crack at him (if we can financially), but to send the message that the club is bigger than the individual.

And let's face it, if ANY team is in the perfect position to make a point it's Brisbane - 2 premierships later, and with a bunch of superstars taking paycuts & knocking back megabucks from elsewhere so that they can continue to don the maroon and gold in a successful era. For the Lions to establish such a solid precedent augurs well for them in the future.

But I wouldn't recommend we try it at the moment after finishing 14th ... we'll save OUR "having principles" until after WE win a couple of flags, I think ...

LOL....yeah...it is sad Tiger fans, but true.

If Dessie is availible, we will draft him. GT has stated this.

If Johnson hasn't been schnagged by you blokes, we'll go for him if Headland is taken.

If both aren't availible, we'll go for probably for Allan.

I'm not the recruiting manager, but it's common knowledge that KJ and DH are wonderful players, whereas Allan shows glimpses and has really struggled since 1999.

If he does recapture his best form with us, it would be nice, but it would probably come in the weeks before the foot gives way again ;)

hmmmm...

it is possible that we could get Johnson and Headland into our mix for next year...we could guarantee Des after a year he WILL be traded to the highest bidder of WCE and Freo. we will get a top 20 pick for him in return, no doubt , maybe more....

in returns he promises to accept whatever we can afford to pay him...

on top of that it's possible we keep our no. 4 pick...depending on the Torney factor....

Then our biggest problem is depth at big man level. 7 walk up starts with no pressure for their spot but Homey, Vardy and injury.

Also we can't cut too many more guys...we have two spots vacant all year ....3 retirements ( 5 total) bye-bye Torney (that's 6)

let's see : 4, 20, 36, 52, 68, 84...PSD pick...

who else would we consider ...expendable ?

Houlihan ?
Biddiscombe ?
King ?...other clubs wouldn't fall over themselves to trade for these guys...but we got rid of Bourke didn't we ?

Rogers ...could he be sent home too...he must be well paid you'd think....

Don't think Tivvers will go...not after Cambpo's acceptance speech at the Jack Dyer medal. Spud loves Bowdo...

i don't know...we'll see.
