Nobby, he was great again but he's not playing as a midfielder.

His improvement has been brilliant, our most improved no doubt. But he's not going to be a future midfielder, his improvement has come because he's been taken away from the midfield.

We were sitting on the city end on the half fowrad flan in the first tier up and could hear the contact a few times when he charged in to contest a ball.

He is a bulldozer and one of my favourite players now. Someone asked the question either here or on BB and yes I would be scared to contest for a ball against him and you can forget being tackled.

Yes I understand that he's not playing as a midfielder.

I'm more talking about his efforts around crowded situations where strong bodies are needed to either tackle- both Howlett and Hocking were good at that against Richmond- or win a contested ball.

I'm just saying over the last few seasons we have had Winders, Dyson, Stanton etc do bugger all in that dept. Now it looks like we finally have some players who are willing to get hurt when trying to win the ball for our 'outsiders' like Dyson and co.

NLM is about the only one who has been consistent in this area over the last few seasons. Since the days of Johnno,JJ,Solly etc we have been missing that hardness around the ground.

Hocking might be a tad slower than the average player but it's just good to see someone barge their way through opponents and give us some grunt.

Good thing about Hocking of course is that he can only improve more with his skills- like Jobe did after a few seasons- and just maybe become a very valuable player for us for years to come.

Yep, I agree.

This is what led me to think you were talking about the midfield...

These three players (when Melksham adds 10kgs) could be the core group for us-along with Watson- of a hard bodied skilled MF for the next two or three years.

I did say MF didn't I....

But you know what i mean. If you're not playing full back or full forward these days you might as well be a midfielder...everyone is a MF'er!

Now if we could just get more out of Houli...;)

Agreed. Don't move him. Besides where do failed midfielders go... :D

redcard that mods!

Last 6 games

- 3 shockers
- 2 average
- 1 excellent

Didnt understand Hocking spending most of his time on Banfield, whilst Slattery played on Sherman.

Should have been the other way around.

Him and Watson are the only two players in our team with any confidence and the ability to take on opponents and win( bar once against Carlton). He should be automatically played in the midfield especially around the stoppages. Would love this guy to take on vice captain next year.

Does the 1%'s week in week out. Not a back pockets a&@ hole and shouldn't be played there. I don't know who is in charge of choosing player positions on game day but they should be hung drawn and quartered for playing him there.

Tough as nails and first to fly the flag always.

GET THIS MAN IN THE CENTRE FOR crying out LOUD
Yeah he plays his best footy as a midfielder. He's been required down back as our stocks have been extremely thin down there since the half way point of the season and his form has suffered as a result. Seems like the only position he hasn't played is coach.

This is not right, he has been in the backline for longer than this season. I still remeber that match Knights played him on Steve Johnson in 2009. Maybe we could put him back in the midfield and people will ask again why does he get tackled from behind so often.

I don't know what to think anymore. Is it just because he's forced to play on small forwards?

He was good earlier in the season but has just been plain shithouse lately.
I think you answered your own question.

He's ****ing fantastic when he's not responsible for staying at home on one player.

He's best off seeing the game unfold in front of him (thanks Longy) and taking it on.

I'm not worried in the slightest.

On top of that, as I said elsewhere, the entire team's shithouse at the moment. I've even stopped giving Prismall slack. :p

You misread my post. I'm not saying that he hasn't played in defence before this season, but he hasn't been able to play midfield because we've needed him to play shut down roles on talls and smalls. IMO he plays his best football as a midfielder which isn't that far fetched is it? Fact of the matter is that he was in good form in the first half of the year when he was playing midfield/half back flank and he's been pretty shit playing as a shut down defender in the second half of the year.

Agree.

Difference with me, I'm just bagging everyone!

Knights never learned from the Steve Johnson raping that Heath was handed in 2009. He's obviously not suited to lock-down roles on dangerous forwards, so why persist? Hocking was fantastic playing off a back flank earlier this year. It's his position; deal with it.

Agree

best role is at half back minding midifelders who are having a break.

Can be shaky playing deep defence.

Has played pretty well in the pre-season. Gets better/smarter with every game.

His kicking seems to have improved too..

Hocking and Watson's aggression around the packs is driving our success in our clearence work and making things happen.

I'm convinced he's going to be a very good player for years to come.

Re: Heath Hocking:The Mooroolbark kid cements his spot

Pfft, Johnny-come-latelies.

Seriously though, he played another solid game and seems to be finding good consistency at senior level. Keep the improvement coming Heath. :thumbsu:

I recon.

Second in the BnF last year ain't bad is it?

I wonder if he has lost a few kgs because he will be a permanent midfielder (relative to modern football) this year.

I hope he can still deliver the side-walk slams.
