‘Proud’ Scotland leaves Devils

Darley Premiership Coach Heath Scotland has parted ways with the club after three years at the helm to further his career in a development role with North Melbourne in the AFL.

The former Darley junior reunited with the Devils in 2017 as Playing Coach after 268 games with Collingwood and Carlton.

The impact of Scotland’s return was immediate, taking the club to the promised land – a Premiership in his first season of a three-year contract. The Devils finished third and fifth (after finals) respectively in the subsequent years before Scotland pulled time on his position.
“I’ve loved my time at the club,” he said.

“It reaffirmed my opinion that Darley is a great club.

“It’s been a most rewarding time for me, I’ll be sad leaving."

Darley Football Manager Craig Baker could not have spoken more highly of Scotland and his impact on the club upon his departure.
“In our 2017 Premiership year when Heath returned to the club, the excitement was through the roof,” he said.

“Pre-season numbers at training were at an all-time high, everyone just wanted to learn and play for him – even the older blokes,” Baker said.
According to Scotland, coaching the Devils in their 100th year (2019) ranks amongst his prouder moments in his distinguished career.
“It was an honour to lead the club in its Centenary,” he said.

“Very special.”

While finding a new coach is now a priority for the Devils ahead of the 2020 season, Baker acknowledged the incumbent has big shoes to fill.

“Heath’s professionalism out of the AFL program was top notch,” he said.

“The development of our younger players has been a credit to him,”

Furthermore, Scotland is convinced the club is in good hands.

“Darley is a very well-run club with a strong ‘juniors’ base,” he said.

“Ultra-consistent and forever driving high standards.

“A fresh voice with new ideas just might help reinvigorate the hunger for success.”

The 39-year old is preparing for the next chapter in his football career joining former Collingwood team-mates Rhys Shaw and Gavin Brown at the Kangaroos.

“It’s a great opportunity for me,” Scotland said.

“I’ll be working with the 1-4 year players.

“Teaching young talent eager to learn is really exciting.”

The Devils Presentation Night on September 26 at the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall will be Scotland’s last official engagement.

After Brad Scott left, everyone at the club kept making statements with the general thrust that not much had changed in the game plan, we were just executing better etc. etc.

Jade Rawlings directly contradicted that yesterday, and Heath Scotland just waxed lyrical on SEN about the changes in gameplan under Shaw, and how that would only be accelerated with a full preseason.

"Rhyce’s understanding of where they’re at really impressed me.
"They made some serious adjustments or improvements when he took over, but he doesn’t think that’s their cap.”

And provided he doesn't genuinely * over their drafting this year then I think there is no issue. WC wouldn't want to create a situation where anyone they recruit in future has their hands tied wrt work that doesn't cause issues for their former club.

I don’t think the eagles care much about coaching appointments, unless he was poaching Petrie and co.
It’s the list management side he’d be told to stay away from.

As long as their names are big when they finish, who cares about the razzle dazzle rating now? In today's interview, Heath was asked about Carlton's choice to go for the big name over keeping Ratten, which went so well for them. I've already recalled the thrill about Blight's last coaching apointment.

North is pulling together an interesting group of strong-minded young coaches, heavy on experience and achievement outside the AFL, and I'm excited to see what they will do.

It's hard not to think of a certain vertically challenged "honest battler" who forged a career at North Melbourne then Melbourne before going on to be a Port Adelaide assistant.

Wonder how many supporters at his new club would've preferred a grand final coach (Eade) or someone who had romantically revived their club to consecutive prelims (Wallace) at the time?

So thus far we have Jade Rawlings and Patch Adams as line coaches? And Gavin Brown and Heath Scotland as Development coaches? I am assuming Moore is just a specialist coach, not a line coach? Unclear if Crocker is still a line coach but I am assuming we need at least one more.

Moore is in charge of the players dietary requirements as well as sourcing lollies for Shawry to chew on.

Just a little bit of an insight, Darley footy club have had more juniors in the western jets under 16’s and under 18’s over the last 3 years than they ever have before. Not only was he the coach of the seniors, but he’d often help out at junior training ect.

Scotland also played a big role in Zac Butters development. He also helped Brett Bewley (Ex-darley junior) take his game to another level at Williamstown.
