Heath Shaw school of defence

I think (and hope) that Banno lines up on Heath Shaw, someone who can run with him and hurt him going the other way, if he just stays with him the whole game, and makes a contest with Shaw every time they go near the ball, I'm sure Shaw wont be as effective in this role and he wont have such a good game.

Little risk of that :p

Obviously you still cant believe that Banno kicked a banana off one step 40m against Essendon :p

I sat behind that. It was preposperous. The banana kick is meant to be used curving the other way. As Jack Dyer would say: "It should have got stuck between the posts".

I tend to agree, mentioned it in the Matchups thread...

For someone who plays as a tagger on opposition mids and small/medium forwards, IMO Banno's 2 goals from 3 games this year and 6 from 12 games last year make him a player that can hurt the opposition going the other way.

6 goals from 12 games??

Thanks for presenting me the opportunity to re-use one of my favourtie sayings........Even a blind chicken finds a kernel of corn now and again

But mostly he gets run over by the milk-truck.

My point was that he spends most of his time tagging opposition forwards and yet still manages to score some goals. Like managing to kick a goal in that great game we all remember him playing on Brad Johnson last year.

If a good return from a small forward is 1-2 goals per game surely 1 goal every 2 games from someone playing in defensive 50 most of the games would qualify them as someone who can hurt the opposition going the other way?

lol. "full ground zone". It was more like a "half ground zone" i.e. an ultra-flood. Pathetic, although effective tactics I'll admit. :)

you really have little idea when it comes to observing and understanding the game don't you.

pies do it beautifully and they are far from "ultra-flooders"

Don't forget his job againts Chad Cornes against Port, 1 touch till half time....... kicked a goal that game aswell if i remember correctly

Definitely kicked 1 goal that game, may have even snagged a second.

He did kick 2 that game.

Cornes plays mainly across HB and thru the midfield, which means Banno was thru the midfield and across our half forward line while tagging him -very good example of what his output could be if he tags Heath Shaw this week :thumbsu:

I cited the Doggies game because Johnson is a forward and the point I was trying to make to Gilly was that even when Banno tags an opposition forward (and therefore spends most of the game in our backline) he still managed to kick a goal.

Shaw will need a defensive tag, had 14 rebounds from 50 last weekend.....and IIRC we are 16th in the league in allowing defensive rebounds form our F50.

I'm still looking for the button on my remote that allows me to view the whole ground so I can view this "mega-flood" theory.

Seriously Lajon.....your boy Parrot is a moron....no need to bite at his preposterous comments. I am surprised he has been so busy on your boards....thought he would be busy organising a claim to send to the AFL to secure the 4 points from round 1 for a moral victory.

The AFL aren't being very generous with that, and they may decide to only give us 2 points, of course then Parrot and his legal team would take the AFL to court...

Heath Shaw is great running it out of defence. He sets up so many attacking moves for Collingwood, and his use of the ball is first class most of the time. He'd be great at Carlton, yet I reckon a young bloke we drafted last year called Steven Browne may not be to dis-similar to Shaw. Watch this space.

The game is won from the half back flank, that is one reason why Collingwood are so succesful.

Fair call - I rate Browne.

However, the problem is that while he has many of the attributes that Shaw has (his kicking's not quite as good though), it's mostly about developing that uncanny intuition that allows him to choose the right option exceptionally quickly.

I wouldn't say that Heath Shaw's actual disposal is the best on our team (although certainly above average), but he makes it look that way because 99% of the time he picks the perfect option and gets the ball to them.
