To even contemplate a destabilizing influence like Shaw when we have just delisted our primary motivating heart and soul is a massive kick in the guts.

If we have learnt anything from past decade, it is character that builds champions and champion teams.

No Shaw.

I think Shaw would be good for us. I just have one problem.
Even though Shaw is a great rebounder, I don't think he is that great at actually defending, along with some of the others. When you look at the potential backline, you can see-

Get him in!
Rivers: shown signs that he will be OK, but yet to really prove his worth
Lonergan: great defender
Mackie: good at rebounding and setting up play, but not a great defender
Taylor: good at everything
Enright: perfect at everything, but age a worry
Shaw: great rebounder, not so great defender

One of our problems this year was that we were always attacking and that left us vulnerable to small forwards kicking bags (Monfries, McGrath, etc.) I think that having all those rebounders will be good, but I worry about not having enough really good defenders to stop the little guys kicking all the goals.

I am for Shaw though if we can get him at the right price

I voted 'no'-seeing Shaw in a cats jumper just doesn't sit right with me.

Not a fan of his behaviour-yeah, I know we have a strong leadership group and all-but we had several players this season who had brain fades, do we really need another with that 'potential' (just look at his last games for the Pies  )

I know he is a talented rebounding player, which Chris Scott seems to love (& base his game plan around), but I'd prefer another 'true' defender, as IMO, we're still a bit prone to the leaks in defence.

But don't worry guys who voted in favour of bringing him in, it will probably be the case, as I'm not getting anything I want atm (wanted both Pods and Chappy to stay), so there's a high possibility we'll see Shaw in the hoops next year!!!

would be the worst decision since bringing in Mitchell White

retiring older players and then bringing in a 28yo who we don't need and has attitude problems.

Thurlow should be in the 22 next year and if not him we still have T Hunt who can play that role or even Varcoe

one of our best player in finals was Cam Guthrie who is only 21 with 40 games, we need more guys like that not old topups

If we are delisting guys like Hunt, Chappy and Pods so that we can play kids and get games and experience into them why would we recruit Shaw who is going to deny a kid like Thurlow and Bews etc games. It flies in the face of why we go rid of senior players. Chris Scott said it himself, so why recruit Shaw and go against what you have been saying.

Too old, don't want. If he was 24-5 maybe.

PS we don't have a no dh policy, no-one does...there is however a dh ratio policy ie talent in proportion to dh'ness. If clubs really had such a blanket policy each and every team would have a list of about 20.

*gets off soapbox*

If we get Shaw, we have delisted J Hunt for him, not Chapman. Hard to argue that is not an upgrade.

It all depends on price but I am more confident we ca strike a deal now that it appears Buckley has made up his mind and he won't be at Collingwood.

Sounds good to me-he has 4 more years in him?-hasn't had a lot of injuries, strengthens the backline. He's a good footballer, good skills and hard worker-I can still see him in 2011 GF chasing our players despite the jelly his legs had become-it impressed me at the time. Our culture can cope with him-he's okay these days. He can only make our team stronger surely.

I wouldn't mind him so long as he doesn't cost much. A first rounder is IMO out of the question.
I agree with him out backline is old so as a comparison this is how if prefer out backline to look:

Guthrie - lonergan - mackie
Thurlow - Taylor - enright

Also if we happen to snare gardiner, which is a slight chance, I'd have him in there aswell which would make it a really decent YOUNG backline.

Am I worried about Shaw being a "dickhead"? No. We have a fantastic culture down at Geelong with a great leadership team! No way will Joel and Scotty let him get away with sh*t! And he's really not that bad is he (no worse than SJ once or Stokesy once was) he's just a little too passionate at times - and sometimes that can be a good thing!

Have to be honest, the "no dickheads" thing is a bit of a myth. The truth is if you're a good enough player clubs will take you. You've got excellent examples in Franklin, Shaw, Milne, Hurley etc. The media will cover up most of your worst activities so only the very minor get publicised.

Even at Geelong (which reputedly is one of the better ones in the league), in the last few years we've had Steve Johnson get arrested, Stokes get caught with coke, David Johnson get in a fight the week of the Grand Final (in 2007), and Jesse Stringer up for assault. And that's just what we do know about.

My objections are more about Shaw as a player. He's good at his best, but we've got far too many players in that age bracket already. And he doesn't necessarily add anything we can't live without. No thanks.

Why try and get Taylor Adams? He doesn't necessarily add anything we can't live without.

We look set to lose over 800 games' experience with the recent confirmed / likely delistings / retirements. Shaw is a premiership defender who was regarded by all as "elite" in 2010 - 2012. If a change of environment reinvigorates him just as his brother's move to Sydney did, then I am all for it. Besides, having Shaw in defence would allow Bartel to be played up forward.

Agree with this! And his brother is still playing well at 31 (will be 32 soon) - so hopefully we'd get the same longevity out of Heath.
And it would be good to see Bartel out of the back line!

Well all this posturing, with most news outlets stating GC are in prime position, means jack. Until GFC say he is in the team, everyone's view on this is wasted.

Just wait to see what they are doing, then comment. Just some of the negative comments, after what we have experienced over the past 7 years is a bit rich.

Not a fan of Heath Shaw.

His list of club misdemeanours is as long as Dane Swan's "sleeve" and his awkward running gait seems to predispose him to soft tissue injuries.

Goes completely missing when given a forward tag and his negative body language / disposition wont change at this point in his career.

Prefer to see Guthrie, Thurlow, Bews and/or THunt developing their games down there in 2014.

Tough one. I will say yes. He can be awfully bloody damaging. Is a freakin meat head though both off and on field at times. Must drop that shit he will be walking in to a side in transition and containing many young/impressionable players.

He was very damaging to Collingwood in the final against Port, that's for sure. Absolutely idiotic bit of play.

Bear in mind, Collingwood want to get rid of him. And they've got meatheads from top to bottom in that club. That should scream the answer.

You're arguing with the wrong person - I've never said we should go after Adams in the first place. Wells has the track record to suggest he can find the right players who normal garden variety draft picks, and if we can trade out Varcoe or someone else to get more picks, even better.

Voted no for Shaw. As others have summed up nicely, rather give one of our own young guys a shot-Thurlow looked promising, Bews is developing. Wrong message to bring in an aging player from another club

Are we the only club linked to shaw?

Why us?
Shaw can play, add to our defence .
Was balme at collingwood when shaw was there?
It might come down to him.

It dont matter collingwood never give anything away cheap will cost to much to get him.but i dont vote yes only if cheap wich will never happen with pies

I'd be very disappointed if we offered anything more than our second rounder for Shaw.
It's the same speculatory type deal we did for Hmac last year. That's all it deserves too.
The Pies can't possibly expect any club with Shaw's salary requirements and clear behavioural issues to be offering the world up to help them out of what is clearly an untenable internal player conflict with the coach et al; so in other words a problem of their own making.

If he chooses the Cats, cool, just offer the second pick with no icing, but talk of using Varcoe?
Sure try get an Adams or a higher place in the first round, but not on fool's gold.

I will be pissed if we offer any thing more than a 1/2 empty can of Toohey's New for taking trouble off Collingwood's hands. He would just hinder the progress of kids like Thurlow, who I would expect to take the next step after a good summer in the gym.
