Heffernan a pie???

Theres been heaps of rumours going around that we will trade Woey for Heffernan i personally would ask for a draft pick and take my chances in the draft because from what ive seen Heffernan hasnt done anything at melbourne.

This raises an interesting question though; in 2000, Woey was Brownlow medalist. At worst you'd argue he was in the top 5 players of that year (Kouta and Buckley clearly better). With respect to Woey, even at his best, he couldn't be considered tough!

In the mean time guys like Heffernan, Blumfield and Caracella, were leading a team some (moronic) people sighted as the "best team ever", to an almost undefeated season. None of these players are renowned for being especially physical players (to say the least).

So the question is, at that precise moment in time, was footy at its absolute softest??

I'm happy to conceed Caracella, but Heffernan wasn't soft. Not in 2000 anyway.
Blumfield was neither here nor there, but Heff played with a lot of courage and won a lot inside ball. I don't know what has happened since he has been at Melbourne, but he certainly wasn't soft at Essendon.

We had Wallis, Long, Hird, Fletcher, Hardwick, Johnson x2, Solomon, Wellman, Barnard, Moorcroft etc. All fit into the tough, hard, or courageous category. We didn't need all 22 blokes to be phyical players.

Brisbane's side of 2001- was seen to be one of the toughest of all time and the vast majority of those players were running around in 2000, the Roos still had a lot of mongrel in them and so did Carlton.

Some good points Longy, but I still reckon there is a difference in hardness today.

Maybe it's to do with the perpetual flood, or "scrumby". The more delicate frames of Heff, Woey, Carrots etc. have made what should be the primes of their careers, die in the arse quicker than usual.

I propose as a result of this perpetual flood, that we recruit more fat arsed midfielders, like Shackleton, as it is the wave of the future!!

Some good points Longy, but I still reckon there is a difference in hardness today.

I think there are just more big bodies today, especially through the midfield.
In 2000 we weren't overly big, but we were reasonably quick and committed. We also had the ability to run all day, we were far and away the fittest team in the comp.

Hilarious suggestion. I'd rather keep Woey on a suitable salary than pick up a dud like Heffernan. Better still, give Woey away for a draft pick (or even for nothing) and draft a kid.

Caracella isn't soft, but he isn't hard.
He is quite a good exponent at getting the ball out in a pack (top 5 in our hard ball gets 2005) but he isn't hard enough that he will break open a pack nor lay a bone crunching tackle. The in and under stuff goes unnonticed, especially with a type of player like Caracella who is not the type who you'd expect to get the hard ball.
I think the thing that contributed to his decline was the fact he lost pace and players around him got worse after 2000. He was great on the wing/hff when he was the 5th/6th player in line to be tagged but he quickly became just a sneaky forward when he would attract the #1 or 2 tagger when Essendon declined as a team. He couldn't quite get into the Brisbane team for a sustained period of time becuase they had enough classy wingmen and small forwards and when he did he was expected to be a small forward that pulls 2-3 goals out of his ass each weak, he is not that sort of player. His best position is around HFF where he can roam around as either a crumber or a leading player depending on the situation, he is very sneaky at getting by him self in stoppages and often kicks goals where he comes from the wing unmarked for a goal. He is not a pure crumber like Milne.

I would rather axe him from our list and get no picks if Heffernan was the only swap we could get, I would rather see Rupert making a come back in a Pies jumper then Heffernan wearing one.We should try and do a swap for Armstrong with Melbourne he is just playing for their reserves anyway.

we gave williams a "do or die" 1 yr contract last year, somehow i reckon woey would react to that and actually deliver abit better than dud williams.

Woewoedin, as bad as he's been this year (especially in the first part of the year), he still does have a certain aspect of polish about him. If god forbid we have a half decent season next year and the team plays with abit of confidence, he would actually be useful. He's usually a pretty good kick, knows how to find it abit, and has shown on a few occasions he can shut players down when needed.

I'm not too sure we should really get rid of him. we've already cut 6 players, and im sure theres more to come, and we definitly wont get anything worthwhile for him.....

but that said, he'd definitly have to be on a reduced contract. wether he's willing to play for the amount we SHOULD actually offer, and play with heart as well.. remains to be seen.

is hard working player who we could do with for depth, if he earns a game next year good, if not it should mean that the pies are going along ok
