Hello, Deaf American here!

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Thanks for the rundown, it helps very much with me guessing which would benefit me and which will not. Unfortunately, the club songs will not help because I'm deaf hahahaha! But again, thanks for providing a clear and a little unbiased view of my candidates (not St. Kilda :p) like Geelong, North Melbourne, and Hawthorn.

Today I'm thinking of narrowing the list by cutting one or two clubs from contention to become my favorite team from "on-the-middle" list. However, I'm watching a St. Kilda-North Melbourne match (I won't tell you which year!) so it's the first match between two Candidate Status group!

I'm so ****ing dumb I swear. I actually like the Saints they're in a rough spot atm IMO and don't have a successful history.

I'm so ****ing dumb I swear. I actually like the Saints they're in a rough spot atm IMO and don't have a successful history.

It's ok, it's funny when someone didn't read my first post in my thread about me being deaf, hahahaha!

Anyway, I made a decision to eliminate two teams from contention:

Official Candidate Status:

North Melbourne

Geelong
Hawthorn
St. Kilda

On the Fence (Not in order):

Port Adelaide
Adelaide
Carlton
Melbourne
Richmond
Essendon

Eliminated from Contention:

Brisbane

Western/Footscray
Sydney
Fremantle
West Coast Eagles
Gold Coast Suns

Collingwood
GWS Giants

The reason why Western and Brisbane are eliminated because they decided to turn down the past of the old clubs by either changing the name to Western Bulldogs just to try to expand the influence over the Western Victoria or merging with a historic club to form a new franchise for the AFL.

So with that, Queensland is eliminated, leaving South Australia and Victoria alive in the running (2 SA vs 8 Victorian clubs)

Just thought I'd like to mention that Hawthorn supporters are not in fact even close to being the worst supporters in the league!
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=875490&highlight=has+the+worst+posters

Not what 151 other individuals say.

As for real life Hawthorn supporters, I still don't like them but they're better than they are on BF.

I went to the Hawthorn-Geelong Q/F last year, and the Hawks supporters around me were cheering and laughing as our 19 year old forward came off the ground seriously injured. Can't speak for all of them though.

Geelong supporters don't like Hawthorn very much.
Nor do Essendon, Collingwood. It's called a rivalry.

Hawthorn's gameplan is often maligned, because it has a sort of chip-chip style to it and seems a little boring. (Don't kill me, guys!! :) )

Geelong's is described as exciting and attractive, by many people. Look around on BF and Google if you don't believe me.

Here are a few videos of some players in our current 22.

Matthew Scarlett - Defender (probably in our top 5 best players of all time)

In the 2009 Grand Final

Corey Enright - Defender (reigning Best and Fairest winner)

David Wojcinski - Defender (Great underrated player, probably more important than we think)

Andrew Mackie - Defender (Awesome, criminally underrated player. Probably one of our most improved. Used to be one of our most hopeless players, now he's one of the best. Very important to our side)

Joel Selwood - Midfielder (Our current 23-yo captain. Probably in the top 10 players in the whole competition. Very very important to our side. Still so young, but has achieved so much. Is known for his outrageous courage and amazing leadership).

Joel Selwood courage:

Jimmy Bartel - Midfielder (One of our best players. He was the 2007 Brownlow Medallist. He is completely selfless and a very versatile player and is willing to do anything for the team. He is loyal and has great leadership qualties. He won the 2011 Norm Smith medal).

Steve Johnson - Forward (one of the best forwards in the comp. He's known as "the magician" and the "Albert Einstein of football" because he is capable of doing the impossible and kicking goals from the most ridiculous places. Probably one of our most exciting, but frustrating players. Gun.)

Tom Hawkins - Forward (This guy's always been promising, but could never keep up his good form. He was named our worst player for a long time, and people questioned whether he'd still be on a list in 3 years time. But we stuck by him and he delivered. He had a solid 2nd half of the season. But his finals series was AMAZING. Consistently our best player, and he was looking like Gary Ablett Snr and Wayne Carey!! None of us expected him to step up when our #1 forward Podsiadly came off the ground in the GF. But he did. Hawkins amassed NINE CONTESTED MARKS on almost every Collingwood defender. He KILLED their back line and singlehandedly won us the premiership in 2011).

This is the guy everyone called a spud. He is a MONSTER now.

Travis Varcoe - Forward (One of our most exciting and underrated players. He is maligned by many opposition fans, but they have NO IDEA how good he is).

Running down Buddy Franklin (the one in the video the Hawks supporter posted).

His famous goal in the 2011 GF. He was everywhere!

Here are some youngsters who also played in the 2011 GF.

Allen Christensen (a VERY promising youngster who stays cool under pressure. Many predict he will win a Brownlow in the future. A very handy player!)

His amazing mark in the 2011 GF!

Mitch Duncan (a very good youngster. Very underrated and very versatile. Can plat pretty much anywhere. Has proven to be a beautiful mark and an even better kick!)
His 2011 GF goal.

And here is the 19 year old that got injured in the 2011 QF vs Hawthorn (in which he kicked our only 2 goals in the first quarter!).

He is honestly our best youngster. Kicks bags of goals and can play defense. He keeps his cool under pressure. He was our third highest goalkicker before getting injured. I seriously cannot stress how good he is for someone his age. He will be AMAZING in the future and his injury was a massive shame.

Beautiful kick and a BEAUTIFUL mark. Very veeeery good player. Here is why his injury was a crying shame:

Here is Menzel in his 7th game, beating the reigning Brownlow Medallist in an important one-on-one

Huge shame.

So yeh. Those are some of our players.

I'll leave you with a team goal:

Good thing about geelong is they play most of their games at their own home ground whilst all the other victorian sides share a ground with three or four other teams. With the latest redevelopments Simonds Stadium (traditionally known as Kardinia Park) is gonna become a world class boutique stadium :thumbsu:

No, we do not play most of our games at KP. In 2011, we played 7 games there. This year we're playing 7 or 8 there.

Shame our home ground "advantage" is wasted on the woeful teams

We were undefeated at your home ground in 2011, and same with KP up until round 23

You have 11 home games a year (outside finals).
Last I checked 7 was more than half of 11.

You may be deaf, but you're certainly not dumb. You've just elevated yourself into the rarified atmosphere of those Americans who care about our game. You are among a very select elite.

I'll not try to convert you to following my team, because that would be beneath us both. Enjoy. This is a mainly good site, about the best ball game in the world.

Rak, go with Richmond. There are some things you'll have to do.

1. Suffer in good company
2. Be certain every year and after every draft that this is the year we've moved up into the finals.
3. Be feral to everyone until the Tiges are mathematically eliminated. Then hide out on the General Board and politely talk to people who have sucessful teams but still can't get laid.
4.. Finish 9th
5. Start to suffer then realize that 9th is an improvement
6. Act feral because we finished 9th and someone besides us took the spoon. Ha! w***ers.
7. Realize that the Tiges in recent years have taken the spoon more than any other. Hey! Thats's not funny! w***ers!
8, Then suffer a bit more.
9. Repeat steps 1-8 year after year.
10. In an undetermined year in the future (probably a fictional event in a Sci Fi movie) Richmond wins GF.
11. Act feral on Bigfooty for days because you deserve this after years of faithful suffering.
12. Realize it was only a movie. And even then the movie was part of a drink induced dream. No one would make that ****ing movie.
13. Spend 35 more years repeating steps 1-12.

Let's see another member of the boards be as concise as that about how to be a full member for their team. Won't happen. w***ers!

Suffer.

I think you should go for North mate. Small supporter base but a real fighting club who I like. Also think they have a great bunch of kids coming through and love their coach. They have a good draw this year too (play GWS and GC two times each) so I think they'll definitely step up into the 8 this season. They won't be kicked out or moved, the AFL won't let that happen to them.

Thanks skilts, I appreciate it very much. I'm trying to find my foot in the footy discussions where I can discuss without looking like a fool without the knowledge of current footy as it happened. And thanks for the warm welcome!

Hahahahaha, Loved your post, thanks! I appreciate it very much and I'll think about Richmond and whether it will qualify as a Candidate Status. The problem is that they are without Richo, one of the Richmond's great players. I'm not sure if I know any who will fill his shoes either at full forward or in the forward.

Wow... I never heard that an member here who is a fan of Collingwood came to suggest about North Melbourne... I'm pinching myself in the arm :p. Anyway, almost like Green Bay Packers, a small supporter base with the threats of relocation or folding. However they fought through with four Super Bowls titles. and thanks for the recommendation, I'll think about it :)

I thought the Packers had a huge fanbase and like an 86 year waiting list?

Not after going one and done this year.

It's true, for season tickets, it's hard to get, so families had to pass the spot on the waiting list to their children via wills, so that's how the Packers operated as the America's only major-league community-owned team and we brought in 13 National Football League championships, one of the most-decorated teams in American sports history :D

What about the Yankees?

In the style of the Collingwood supporter, I'm going to recommend a less fortunate opposition team.

I think you should re-consider the Brisbane Lions. They didn't rename their club for marketing purposes.

Although they were a big club in the past, the Fitzroy Lions were in huge trouble during the mid 90s. Their team *had a horrible year, with a % in the 40s (even Port in 2011 had a higher % than them) they lacked supporters and they were in major financial trouble.

They chose to merge with the Brisbane Bears to keep the club alive in some way, rather than fold and never be seen again.

The Brisbane started the millenium with a bang, and won the flags in 2001, 2002 and 2003. That team is seen as one of the best teams of all time.

As for Brisbane nowadays, I find a lot to admire about them. They're my second favourite team. They finished in the bottom 4 in 2011, but I can definitely see them making finals in 2012. They're a great team imo, and challenged the top 4 teams till the end of the match when their young players started to tire. They had their two best players out for most of the year, and a lot of the work was piled onto almost-elite younguns Redden and Rockliff.

Their team is full of very promising youngsters, superstars and their older players are utter legends of the game (some played in the threepeat). Their current coach is Michael Voss, the triple premiership captain and best player in Brisbane's era.*

I think Brisbane will have a lot of success very soon, and they need more supporters (Brisbane is a rugby city. Ugh).

He certainly was a champ, but I think you'll find we have an established young star of the competition in Jack Riewoldt, and one who's ready to make his mark in Tyrone Vickery, who will be more than dangerous in our forward line... It's the rest of the ground where we've got to fill in the gaps! :p

As with skilts, I'm not gonna tell you to choose the Tigers, as I believe it's a decision you should make with your heart, but best of luck on finding your team. Congrats on discovering our great game, and enjoy your stay on BigFooty :thumbsu:

Thanks rideclutch, I appreciate your welcome post. I discovered the great sport of Australian Rules Football back in 2005-2006 but I never entered this forum till now for the video game called AFL Live 2011 (and yes, I owned it!!! :D)

They have 27 World Series titles.

I'm a Red Sox fan though. We've won 7 World Series titles, so only 21 more to beat them. :)

As for the Rays, 28 titles left to win :p

Thanks for your consideration on Brisbane Lions, but since Fitzroy re-appeared in an amateur competition, I considered Brisbane Lions no longer a historic club anymore and that's the reason why the Lions is eliminated from the contention.

University, a club from almost 100 years ago, folded and were never to be seen again. That still makes them a historic club, right?

Too bad, maybe you'll reconsider when Brisbane start winning flags :p;):D

University, a club from almost 100 years ago, folded and were never to be seen again.

Wrong again muttweed.

University disbanded from the VFL during the start of WW1 before the 1915 season. They began playing Football again in 1919 and were requested by the VFL to supply two teams to the reserves. The two teams were the University Blues and University Blacks, or University A and B at the time.

Both Melbourne University teams are still active today, playing in the VAFA.

Sorry to revive a old thread, but I haven't decided on a team yet and I didn't participate much in BigFooty (except Footy Designs and Asia Cup voting) but I found my favorite team in rugby union... Queensland Reds! :)

Also, I found a new friend who is not from here but he's from Australia and we talked much about cricket, rugby, and Australian Rules Football. He's a Collingwood fan so he said that he will encourage and help me with the search for my favorite team in AFL but won't go for Carlton.

Back to the regular programming for y'all in BigFooty forums :p
