One of my mates legit had a family friend of hers quit their job, drop out of society and drop off the grid because they were afraid of Y2K.

Then they had to come crawling back into society and ended up working as a lollipop man for roadworks crews, the poor bastard (this is before Irish backpackeresses got wind of the gig, I guess). Like $40 an hour on the night shift, though - wish I'd freaked out about the millennium bug.
