Might as well tell motor racing, horse racing, cricket, baseball to stop wearing helmets too.
Silly argument. The helmet isnt a weapon, nor is the one that causes any sort of damage, in any of those other sports.

Terrible idea.
There'd be even more injuries because a lot of NFL players have terrible tackling technique as it is, remove the pads that give them the confidence to tackle and watch them stuff it up.
Then there's the offensive players who are nearly as bad in protecting themselves from hits, not to mention all the times receivers leave themselves open making a catch.

so enforce rules and it will minimize this issue (it's simply a cultural problem), American football needs a sin bin (as do many other sports including soccer football).

The NFL can eject players, and do.

I like the College rules for Targeting being an ejection with it being reviewed. But they are still too inconstant some should be ejected and some players were wrongfully ejected. If they worked on that rule a bit more it will be better.

The NFL needs full time officials before they bring in changes to the ejections. Call the game tighter and the players will learn, but they are judgement calls and easy to miss right now.

Rules aren't going to fix poor technique though. Majority of the players no longer headhunt and instead are going for big body shots or going low.
Also there's already rules for hitting defenceless receivers.
Plus there's already the ability to send players off for the game either through one incident or for drawing two unsportsmanlike penalties.

keep pads and helmets...

its all in one simple rule change.. no head hits.

look at the AFL and Rugby. there are way less concussions in those sports and head its are illegal.

its kinda like the gun laws...

you take away the guns, less people get slaughtered in mass killings.

yeah, we'll still get cases of CTE.. yes, we will still have lunatics committing mass shootings.
but it at least lowers the risk.

NFL sort of is moving that way, the way a continent or glacier moves if you watch closely, but then you have an Alonso incident & I think 'nup, they are rooted to the spot'.

LOL. this is one of the dumbest things i have seen on the AF board since people claiming Hayne would show the americans how its done.

If they got rid of helmets and shells they players would use heads as weapons and there would be a million times more concussions. players would get killed going over the middle when they cop a shoulder to the head/neck.

The players know the risks now, there are ex players trying to develop a safer helmet, but its never going to be a safe game.

With the force the players move at the flack jackets and shells prevent more injuries than they cause by players using as weapons.

It would change the whole dynamic of play in the trenches and therefore change the game...not for the better.

Also as aussiesude alludes to, catching the ball would be dangerous. A lot of times these guys are running the same way as the ball to use an AFL parlance.

Here we call courageous, in the NFL it's the norm and expected. Guys would get cleaned up with the old hip and shoulder, there would be shirtfronts galore. Would be even more dangerous

:drunk: Like teams would continue playing offence as they do now.
