Ive had a blocked ear for a few days now, and it seems to be getting worse. Ive tried cotton buds, but only succeed in scraping out brown/yellow gunk.

Does anyone have any home remedies for my situation??? :(

Go to the chemist and get an ear cleaning kit

OR

Go to your GP and ask him to flush your ears out (it tickles)

There are things called EAR CANDLES, that claim to clean your ear, but they're a fallacy and don't do anything at all.

Go with that option some GP's refer to it as having your ear syringened but its just squirting warm water in there really.

This reminds me of a funny high school story about when one of my semi-******ed mates was picking his ear with of those pencils with an eraser on the end. When he pulled it out the eraser was stuck tight and he had to go to hospital to get it out. ****** he coped some grief of the everyone for weeks about that.

PS: maybe a footy forum isn't the best place to be recieving medical advice!!

You can buy stuff at the chemist called Auralgan (I think). It does the job well. I had something called "Swimmers Ear" for about 6 months before it drove me crazy and this stuff fixed it in about 2 days.

How did they become blocked? Is it being presumptuous to suggest you should clean them more often?

edit:4 to go

My mother used to (correctly) say, "Never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear." Cotton buds can be dangerous and they tend to worsen the problem by compacting the wax. Kenacomb Optic Ear Drops worked a treat for me last time I had the problem. (I too couldn't resist the urge to use cotton buds initially). However, I think they are prescription only.

A douche, you say? :thumbsu:

hahaha! GOLD!

for me i remember accidentally getting shampoo in it whilst washing my hair. i fiddled around and washed the shampoo out. all of a sudden i look down in the shower and see a piece of ear wax the size of a 5 cent piece!!!! i kept it in one of those urine sample containers (dont ask why I had one at the time). I was a proud man. :D

Yeah, done that. Christ it feels weird, but it's fantastic afterwards. Though, your balance is affected for a short time so don't be surprised if you walk into a wall like I did ;)

Was this at the hair dressers?

I wise man once told me never to sleep with anyone more crazy than yourself. I don't know if I've broken that rule or not.

How was Vietnam?

Hi Leper. I still can't stop talking about how much I liked Vietnam and its people. After all that has gone before, you'll find it hard to believe I forgot to get a haircut in HCMC!

Back on subject, I believe they have a method where you put your private bits on a butcher's block and have him give them a good belt with a mallet. If that doesn't get the wax out of your ears then nothing will!

I've considered getting the doc to flush my ears, but people touching my ears freaks me out a bit.

I like to have clean ears so i clean them with cotton buds every 2-3 days and wash them in the shower every day and night.

I had some nasty blockage in my left ear earlier this year. Saw the GP. HE told me to put a little veg/olive oil in each ear, block it with cotton, sleep on it and come back the next day (the oil softens the wax). Then he irrigated it (syringed it).

See your GP; he or she will likely advise you do some of the same.

I had the sensation of blocked ears for a few days on end, went to the Dr and was told my ear drums were all swollen and I really had to use ear pugs when I saw live bands. My hearing is pretty damaged now and can only listen on the phone in my stronger ear else or the background noise appears to be louder.

So don't asume its a blockage, you might be going deaf. Poking about in there ain't going to help.

Yep. Do the oil thing even if it means lying on the couch on one side for 2 hours. This will soften the wax. Then get one of those "squirty" bottles that hairdressers & gardeners use, you know the one's, with the adjustable nozzle, about $2.00. Then squirt the hell out of your ear over the wash basin or in the shower. The beauty of the "squirty" bottle is the adjustable nozzle, you can adjust the pressure & direction to suit the circumstance. I have done this plenty of times with 100% successes.
There's a damn good reason Dr's drive around in BMW's. Do it yourself.
