One of the Blueseum writers is compiling a story on what Carlton has done with our first draft picks from each year. Some years we used them on key players (92- McKay, 93- Beaumont), some years we traded them (91 - Duke, 95 - Devonport, 01 - McKernan) with various results and some years we just went nowhere with them.

In 1987, Carlton picked Peter Bubner with Pick 12.

Who was he, and why don't we have any other records on him?

For interest:
1986 - First pick, pick 12: Dom Fotia
1987 - Pick 12: Bubner
1988 - Traded Pick 12 and 26: Glenn Hawker
1989 - Pick 7: Edgar
1990 - Traded McKenzie for Pick 2, utilised on Cook
1991 - Traded Pick 5 for Earl Spalding
1992 - Pick 13: McKay
1993 - Pick 18: Beaumont
1994 - Pick 15: Camporeale
1995 - Pick 19: Craig Devonport!
1996 - Pick 19: Mick McGuane!
1997 - Pick 7: Kris Massie
1998 - Pick 6: Murray Vance
1999 - Picks 16 and 46: Stephen O'Reilly
2000 - Pick 4: Luke Livingston
2001 - Pick 14 (among others): Corey McKernan
2002 - Pick 45: Simpson

Then Walker, Murphy, Gibbs and the Kroooze.

This year it was Carlton's turn to fall victim to the player retention scheme when Peter Bubner signed up after being recruited. Bubner would later be included in Adeliade's initial training squad but was cut after missing a training session as an example of the type of discipline the new club expected.

Found this snippet on an old draft site. He won a B & F at Central Districts in 83.

I think from memory he played in the state game in 1989 at CHB when the Vics flogged SA with Dermie, Lockett and Dunstall up forward. I think Sticks kicked about 4 from FF with him and Braddles in our best that very wet day.

It was the same game when Andy Collins tackled Hall from behind at the city end (his teammate at Hawthorn) and did his knee and missed the rest of the season. The ground was an absolute quagmire that day.

PS: a footnote on the Craig Devonport swap, l am sure the Saints used that for Barry Hall (nearly as good as when we traded for Mansfield and gave them the pick that the cats used to secure Paul Chapman).

Thanks all for your contributions. We have added a brief page for Bubner and he can be accessed through the 'Other Players' menu.

Bomba, you are correct. Our pick 19 for Devonport landed Barry Hall, and our pick 31 in 1999 for Mansfield landed Chapman. Together with 16 and 46 going for O'Reilly, our first 3 picks of that year netted Mansfield and O'Reilly - about 60 games between them in 2000-2002.

with the exception of the last 5 that's an embarrassing list of picks.....do I recall right that when we traded for Hawker one of those picks we had could have snagged Michael Long??????

We could have but the Bombers used the 2 picks we gave them on Brad Fox and another guy who l think didnt even play a game for them. Longy went a little bit further down the draft - not much though.

Well I didn`t do that much - I just looked up his name on Google. :p

Like I didn't? As long as I get acknowledgment for my gut-busting research work, I'm happy. I'm a sensitive, insecure little flower me.
