My boss installed a CD burner in my PC but I can't get it to play CD's like on a normal CD drive, my boss was getting it to play at work, but I have put a CD in at home & it won't play, it is detecting the CD & all the tracks, but it won't play it, any thoughts.

Thanks in advance

LOL Ripper
Speakers are plugged in, but it isn't playing the CD, the little number counter stays on 0, even after I push play.

Sandie do you mean that you just can't hear any sound? If so, check that the internal audio cable isn't being used by your other cd or that you have connected you audio cable. :)

This may sound silly but do you have CD playing software on your PC eg. CDMax or Winamp or anything like that? Most PC have a standard default player so I assume that this isn't your problem. Just exhausting the possibilities.:)

it should hopefully only be an internal problem in that maybe the cord linking your cd rom to your sound card has come loose and can easily be slotted back in

Thanks for your input peoples, but it can't be anything too wrong because it was OK at work.

I am worried that is the problem seeing as it was OK at work & when i got it home it wasn't, maybe the cable came loose during travel. Guess I will have to take a look inside.

F@#$(&g computers.

If you already have CD or DVD Drive, I don't think you can have both connected to the soundcard, in which case you may as well just play CDs in the normal drive rather than fiddle with it (not that its particularly demanding to change, just not worthwhile).

I don't have a DVD just a normal CDRom & a CD Rom burner, the Burner is the one my boss has connected to the sound card, as I have said, it worked 3 hours ago.

Thanks everyone it is working now, I just closed all the other applications I had running & started the CD again & it worked, heck if I know why.

Its because one of your other applications was using your soundcard. Even though it really wasn't. Know what I mean? Find out which application is doing it and uninstall it.

I had this problem with an mp3 playing software i had installed. If you restart your computer and you have the same problem as before you'll know its one of the applications screwing you up.

Yep, i have the same problem, i cant play MP3's off my burner, only out of my other cd drive.
Its because i dont have an audio cable hooked up to the burner, cos you dont need it when you have the other drive....unless you wanna play 2 songs at once! :D :D

D4E & PP
Thanks for that, it is working fine now, will have to investigate which application was using the sound card.

PP I have the cable on my burner because it is a better cd rom, I only use the normal cd if I want to copy off one of my CD's.

a good reason to connect audio to the DVD-ROM or CD-ROM and not the burner is that you can listen to the music whilst copying on the fly.

Some advice about CD copy quality. I have found it best to copy songs to your HD as .wav files then drag and drop them onto your burner compilation screen and burn. Do not burn audio above 4X speed or quality will deteriorate.

Nero Burning is best software I have found.

I agree frodo. I'd only use MP3's if I was short on HD space and even then I still use the 320kbps bit rate. And Nero r0x0rs! Especially version 5, fantastic stuff. :D
