Henri Leconte's Commentating

I thought he was ok, kinda like the Mexican/Spanish football (or soccer to others) commentators that go off their nut when a goal is scored.... only Henri does it 99% of the time regardless :D.

I do think he would be more appropriate in lower profile matches (such as the doubles) - or those without much coverage (such as the last Tsonga 5 setter that was not covered from the beginning). Watching that match go back and forward must have been a rollercoaster, and he like all other spectators must have been going goo-goo ga ga with the shots being made.

J.C is a fuss pot, doesn't like J.A (not many do).... finally gets a change and wasn't pleased with Henri.

My thoughts on Leconte's commentary

I would rather cremate my own dog alive than ever have to endure Leconte babbling over the top of a tennis game again.

Granted, it was vaguely amusing listening to his blatant barracking and excited squeals of "THAT SHOT WAS UNBELL-IVABLE!!!" the first few times during the Tsonga 5-setter against Almagro. But it was a one-off. He should never have been allowed back in the box.

He's only capable of spurting excitable, meaningless phrases that leaves even his co-commentators embarrassed and feeling slightly sorry for him. He has the concentration span of a goldfish and the analytical skills of a paralytic 17 year old who's gotten drunk for the first time, and forgets what he's talking about midway through each sentence. When asked by Fitzy last night what Tsonga's strengths were, he replied with a staccato word or two about his serve, then erupted into the kind of boring and biased barracking that you'd expect from an interview with a face-painted fan outside the stadium before the game. At least the face-painted fan knows he's acting like an idiot. And isn't getting paid for it.

You'd like to think some of his problems are language-related. But sadly, you suspect his commentary in French would be just as offensively benign. Probably worse.

Leconte is the classic case in point that being an outlandish character, a past player, being an extrovert or having a sexy accent just doesn't make you a good commentator. Stick to the playing the veteran's tour Henri. And for f*ck's sake, cut down on the amount of white sugar in your diet. Try some ritalin instead.

The man must never be allowed to step foot in a commentary box again.

Re: My thoughts on Leconte's commentary

He lightens up the mood a bit. He's not your classic boring commentator and I would rather listen to to him than the blokes on ESPN who refereed to a shot as a brilliant parabola.

Le Conte isn't the problem, but how 7 is using him is. He shouldn't have been in the box the whole time, short bursts would have been better. They only thing he could have done better was acknowledge that Nole was better at some aspects of the game than Tsonga which he didn't, but hey, that's what you get when you put Le Conte in the box. Refreshing, imo.

In the kind of way a toddler pooping on your new suede couch lightens up the mood.

GOLD! Shocker of a comment (although at least it's vaguely clever and descriptive). American?

So you found his "are you sure?"'s and "really? if you say so"'s within the first 10 minutes of commentary, that interrupted Fitzy mid-sentence, to be good listening? He still would've been equally irritating in short bursts IMO. It's like listening to a high-pitched squeal in the background - after a while you become slightly number to the pain if it's constant, rather than going cycles of relief and frustration when it starts and stops.

They only thing he could have done better was acknowledge that Nole was better at some aspects of the game than Tsonga which he didn't, but hey, that's what you get when you put Le Conte in the box. Refreshing, imo.

Or he could've made a comment throughout the entire 4 hours that was genuinely amusing, interesting, balanced or insightful.

to be honest i find his blatant bias towards Tsonga quite refreshing. I prefer that he is open, as apposed to those Aussie commentators who pretend they are professional yet it is blatant that they are supporting the Aussies. It makes their favoritism more noticable and embarrassing

Agree with this. I don't think he should have been in the box for the whole night though, and would be interesting to see him commentate a match that has no French players in it.

What a pointless new thread... do you think your opinion is too important to be included in the already existing Leconte thread?

I think channel 7 should set a number of times he is allowed to go off his nut per game, say once every set or 1.5 hours. Also a crash course in tennis analysis skills coupled with this excitement cap could cement him a career in commentating.

I do find it amusing but like the stupid Hitler videos or that video of a dumb German kid smashing a keyboard that often frequent the bay it gets boring as batshit although Leconte's commentating has a much longer lasting appeal than either of those two stupid-idiotic videos that made me smile for the first second of it and frown the rest on seeing them for the first time.

They were plugging this guy on Perth news last night. After the sports section wrapped up, the presenter said something like "be sure to tune into the tennis later this evening, Henri Leconte is commentating".

Talk about milking the cow.

But having watched some highlights, the guy is a crack up but I could see how he could get old quickly.

Seems a bit like a French version of crickets Ian Healy in the commentary box, but unlike Healy, he actually has an element of excitement about him. Probably could be a good commentator if he weaved his craziness into some insightful analysis.

Just terrible. Makes it even worse in that French accent. Give me dull JA any day over this farce.

If Henry Leconte is a half-decent commentator then Healy is Clinton Grybas, Leconte makes me sick.

Leconte's hilarious. I wouldn't say he's a good commentator, but he adds a bit (lot!) of colour to an otherwise very drab and boring commentary team.

McEnroe's still the best though.

Just watching the replay of Tsonga Vs Djokovic now on Ch7.... here's a conversation from a few minutes ago.... start of the 5th set....

Went something like this:

Courier: "Let's talk tactics guys. What does someone have to do to win this game?"

Leconte: "Vell, I vill speak for Tsonga, because I'm am French hehehe... but I vould like to see him be more aggressive... come into ze net more.... put ze pressure on Djokovic."

Courier: "And you Fitzy?"

Fitzy: "Well.... whoever wins this game..... is going to have to win this game."

Leconte: "Oh really? Hahahaha! Ooh, that's a good line!"

:p

Give me Leconte any day of the week. :thumbsu:

Healy is bad as they get. At least Leconte doesn't half-assedly attempt to hide his patriotism. Healy does the same thing for the Australian Cricket Team as LeConte does for France, except without any sort of enthusiasm in his voice. Both barrack and neither really offer any regular analysis, so it's a no brainer.

To the true tennis fan (those who understand the technicalities of the game and follow it outside of January), Courier is by far the superior commentator.

I'm impartial on Leconte, so long as he doesn't talk during points.

He's definitely one of a kind, that's for sure. The others at work thought it was funny but sadly he revealed himself to be a bit of a tool towards the end of the Djokovic-Tsonga match IMO. His passion is great, but raving about how good Tsonga was while Fitzy was trying to acknowledge Djokovic's effort just after the match had ended was poor form I reckon. An arrogant Frenchman, who'd have thunk it? :p

For the sake of professionalism and ensuring the best commentators get the nod for the semi-finals, he probably shouldn't commentate on Tsonga's next match but it wouldn't surprise me if Channel 7 milks him for all he's worth anyway... That said he definitely shouldn't change the way he is, sport is about passion and it's characters like Leconte that remind us of that. Just in small doses :D

Leconte is entertaining in small doses, but having to put up with him for 5 sets was way too much.

Turns him from Leconte into Leknob.

Would definitely not want him next to me on a 15 hour trans Pacific flight to LAX.
