A complete bunch of numpties. That Cameron Adams wouldn't know a decent CD if someone used it as a frisbee and it cerrated his throat. He gives the new Gorillaz album 3½ stars, just ½ more than he gave the American Idol bloke the week before.

But todays 'writer' (Graeme Hammond whoever the f*ck he is) has the temerity to give said album 3 stars while the review above that gives Jamie f*cking Cullum 4!!!!! Have a look on Metacritic you idiots and see how real journalists are rating this album.

Can you tell the difference between mass market aimed unoriginal pap and something that trys to take the listener to places they don't usually go, and has more imagination in one song than Jamie whatsisface has had in his whole life?

Personally I think the Gorillaz album is a masterpiece, their second in a row.

As a general rule newspaper music critics are populist opinion soothsayers. But then they try and prove their "street cred" by fawning over some indie artist and their complete tripe.

They wouldn't know a great album if it said "This is an awesome album you ********s" on the cover.

To the OP, i think you're opinion is correct; but your justification is slightly ill-directed.

The way i see it, is that music critics (or so-called experts) tend to rate music on how people who already like that genre, will like the album. And if its something they have no idea about, somewhere between 3 and 4 stars is usually the norm.

I guess at the end of the day, music is all about opinion. I tend to try and find critics who have similar taste in music (genres) to myself, then they will give a true reflection on an album.

Search the net, there's heaps of reviewers out there, some better than others.

But as i said, Music is all about opinion. Whilst a lot of us on here find 75-90% of music played on nova/fox et al. complete and utter rubbish, they are on the upper end of the ratings scale....

"Herald Sun" bit is really redundant. Not judging them or anything, but Professional Music Critics, period, are a bunch of untalented, vacuous mouth breathers with over-inflated egos.

I wouldn't worry about them too much as they are becoming less and less relevant and slowly dying out. If anyone is making a living from being a music critic in 10 years time, they prob deserve it for the sheer amount of **** they would have to suck in order to maintain such a inconsequential job...

To call the HS music hacks critics implies that they have some credibility.

At least The Age has passionate and well informed music writers/critics that don't just toe the line and promote whatever vacuous act the major labels/nova is flogging this week.

About ‘master and everyone’ bonnie prince billy

"Master and Everyone is a solid collection of rather thin songs that never quite sound intimate; songs that meant something profound to someone-- but always, it seems, someone else.”

Anyone who has this album would agree that this is just tripe! I would love to hear the music that’s the yardstick of intimacy which makes master and everyone not by comparison… jesus, get a clue!

Reminds me of the music "guru" Molly Meldrum talking up he genius of Lady Gaga and and that anybody that doesn't respect her huge talents has NFI.

LOL did he really?

What a twat, if he likes her then good for him but how dare he use his "cred" to bully everyone else into agreeing that *nods head* "you can't say she isn't talented"

and everyone must fall in line and think the same thing?
Did I say that? Mmm.

But I've had a rethink and realise I was wrong in the first place.

Much better to have regurgitated lyrics with little or no real meaning so you can concentrate on the tune.
Much better for that tune to be full of cliches so the listener feels comfortable and familiar with what they are hearing.
And the structure - much better to have a verse, verse, chorus, verse, chorus song so the listener does not get confused or even have anything to ponder over after hearing the tune.
And who wants to actually remember the song when you have so many more coming out of the hit factory?

Yes, give me Jamie, Delta, Taylor, Pink every time. And give me a job at the Herald Sun.

Sanity Salesgirl: Hi can I help you?
Customer: I'm looking for a CD for my grandson, can you recommend something?
Salesgirl: Ummm....Nickelback are pretty good, he would like that.
Customer: Ok, thank you. I'll get that.

Now multiply that by the thousands of morons that read the paper and follow the ramblings of sellouts and wannabe musicians who say tripe like Nickleback are the best band since The Beatles.

I'm surprised they've lasted this long. Despite a lifetime love of music, can't say I've ever felt the urge to buy a music magazine. In the end music is for listening too - something to be experienced alone, or with your mates - not for talking about.

Besides, if a group of music critics genuinely likes a band it's usually reason enough to assume that they'll probably suck.

True, but, whether it's "for" it or not, I do enjoy reading or listening to genuine music enthusiasts, be it John Peel or xxxCaRcAsSfAn89xxx on last.fm, talk about music they dig.

As for Professional Music Critics and arbiters of taste, be it the guy in the Herald Sun, some annoying wanker on JJJ or those tryhard hipsters down at Pitchfork (yes, hi thar figjam), well, I believe I've stated my opinion on them... :D

Completely different ends of the scale, but my attitude towards them is the same. Pompous and irrelevant.
